Stands and charging stations tend to look alike, because they are designed to do similar things, which is why when I see a unique solution to stash my computer or tablet, I’m always interested. The Desktop Chair is definitely a distinctive way of charging up your gear.

iPhone 5 Price, Release Date and Specs Announced

As expected, Apple today revealed the iPhone 5. The new iPhone 5 is the first significant update to the iPhone line in 2 years, after last year’s incremental iPhone 4S release, and just in time for iPhone 4 users’ contracts to expire. Perfect timing again, Apple.

iphone 5 front

Starting off with the hardware changes, the new iPhone has a 1136 x 640 (326 ppi) resolution, 4″ multitouch display – for the first time offering a true 16×9 display ratio – ideal for viewing HD video content. This bigger screen also buys you one extra row of apps on the home screen. While Apple has already upgraded its bundled apps for the taller screen, existing apps will be centered on the screen with tiny black bars above and below. The new display is also much thinner, and touts 44% more color saturation than the previous model.

From the front, the iPhone 5 doesn’t look dramatically different – though the camera has been centered above the speaker at the top of the phone, and it looks a little stretched out thanks to the larger screen. On the backside of the unibody aluminum case, you can see a two-toned matte finish which looks nice and is should be way less susceptible to breakage than the all-glass back of the last generation. The iPhone is 7.6mm thick and it weighs 112 grams, making it the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet – 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the 4S as a matter of fact.

Under the hood, the iPhone 5 has an upgraded processor, the A6, which Apple says is twice as fast as its predecessor in both the CPU and graphics departments. And thank goodness, Apple has finally jumped on the 4G bandwagon, offering 4G LTE high-speed connectivity. Assuming you live in a 4G coverage area, this is reason alone to upgrade. The phone also supports HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA wireless technologies. Wi-Fi has also gotten a boost, with 802.11a/b/g/n and dual channel 2.4/5GHz support.

iphone 5 a6 cpu

Despite the upgrades to CPU and wireless, Battery life is rated at 8 hours on an LTE connection, and 10 hours on Wi-Fi, which I assume they achieved thanks to the new low-power display. Word is that the battery is only a 1440 mAh model – in comparison, the Droid RAZR MAXX has a 3300 mAh battery – but it also has a much larger screen and older display tech.

iphone 5 battery life

The iPhone 5′s camera sounds like no slouch, and it has to live up to the stellar camera in the iPhone 4S. It’s got an 8 megapixel sensor with backside illumination, a hybrid IR filter, five-element lens and an f/2.4 aperture. A new dynamic low-light mode provides 2 extra f-stops of performance compared to the 4S too. The new camera also is faster by up to 40%, and offers a spacial noise reduction algorithm in its new image processing chip. The camera also supports a panorama mode similar to the one found on Sony cameras, shooting massive 28 megapixel widescreen images.

iphone 5 panorama

Video mode offers 1080p HD capture with improvements to image stabilization, as well as face detection, and the ability to snap stills while shooting. The front-facing FaceTime HD camera offers 720p resolution, with backside illumination, face detection. You’ll also be able to use FaceTime on cellular networks now. Also upgraded is the audio system, with three microphones (front, back and bottom), as well as improved speakers. In addition, you’ll note that the headphone jack has been moved to the bottom of the phone.

One major change is the switch from the long-standing 30-pin dock connector to a new all-digital, 8-pin connector, dubbed “Lightning.” While the new connector is more durable and 80% smaller to allow for smaller and thinner devices, it does mean you’ll need to start buying new accessories unless you’rewilling to deal with the use of an adapter.

Of course, Apple will gladly sell you some ugly, but necessary 30-pin-to-Lightning connector adapters for $29 a piece. One can only guess that Apple will make tens of millions of dollars selling these over the next few months.

iphone 5 lightning adapter

As anticipated, the iPhone 5 will ship with iOS 6, which is loaded with lots of goodies, including improved phone call handling (such as sending a text or SMS when you can’t accept a call,) Facebook integration, upgrades to Safari, Mail, Facetime and Siri. Shared Photo Stream lets you share images with family and friends, and allows comments and likes as well.

The new Passbook app will let you organize tickets, coupons and gift cards in one neat digital wallet. However, it looks like Apple chose to forgo NFC (Near-field communication) technology for now, which certainly doesn’t help the fortunes of that budding technology.

iphone 5 apps

iOS 6 also is the first release to do away with Google’s apps – so both the Maps and YouTube apps you know will be gone. Instead, you’ll get Apple’s new maps app, which features sharp, vector-based images, turn-by-turn navigation, traffic information, Siri and Yelp integration. The only real concern here is how accurate and up-to-date Apple’s mapping data will be in comparison to the years of information Google has collected. As for YouTube, just grab Google’s own new YouTube app now. It’s much better anyhow.

iphone 5 maps 2

The iPhone 5 will come in three memory configurations: 16GB ($199 USD), 32GB ($299 USD), 64GB ($399 USD) with a 2-year contract.  All models are available in either black or white, with that sexy aluminum back. As a bonus, you can pick up the “old” iPhone 4S for just $99, starting today. 4G LTE Carriers for the iPhone 5 are as follows: U.S.: Sprint, AT&T, Verizon. Canada: Bell, Rogers, Telus, Fido, Virgin Mobile; UK/Germany: T-Mobile; Japan: Softbank and KDDI; Korea: SKT and KT; Hong Kong: SmarTone; and Singapore: SingTel.

iphone 5 black white

The iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order starting this Friday, September 14th, 2012, and will land in stores and homes in North America, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore on September 21st. 20 more countries will get the phone next month. Keep an eye out on the Apple website for pre-order details and more specs.

With all the leaks from parts makers over the last few months, there were no real surprises in today’s announcement, but the iPhone 5 still looks like the most impressive phone Apple has made to date. Assuming battery life is as good as they say, and the 4G networks aren’t brought to their knees when it launches, I can’t see many reasons not to upgrade if you’ve got an iPhone 4 or earlier model.

Ben Heck’s BASIC Pocket PC: The Franken-Computer

Ben Heck is well known as a modder extraordinaire, and this time he doesn’t let anyone down by cobbling together a pocket PC from an array of harvested parts, including a chatpad from an Xbox 360 controller.

ben heck pocket pc hack

The BASIC pocket PC uses the aforementioned chatpad, an Arduino Uno and a Hitachi LCD display. The handheld computer runs an appropriately tiny version of the BASIC programming language called TinyBASIC. Thanks to its built-in interface, this Franken-computer allows Ben to control real-world objects – for example, Heck uses it to control a servo-operated ghost on a pinball playing field.

Check out the full show where Heck shows you how he built the device and to see what it can do.

The whole thing is pretty neat, but you’ll need to brush up on your electronics skills if you want to be able to make one of these for yourself.

Impossible Instant Lab Turns Your Digital Images into Polaroid Photos

Nothing is truly impossible, not if you’ve got the Impossible Team on your side. They’re known for producing instant films for Polaroid cameras when Polaroid officially shut their factories down.

Now they’ve come up with another first that instant photography lovers will love: the Impossible Instant Lab.

Impossible Instant Lab1The Instant Lab is literally the first and only one of its kind in the world. What it does is take the digital images on your iPhone and turn them into instant Polaroid prints. Who knew that was actually even possible?

Apparently, these guys did. All you have to do is fire up the Instant Lab app, put the phone in the cradle, and slide the shutter on the base of the device open. Wait a few minutes while it does its thing and presto! The instant physical copy of your digital photo will be ejected all retro and awesome-looking.

The Impossible Instant Lab is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $229(USD) will get you your very own Instant Lab unit. If you hurry, you can become one of the Early Birds who can get the Instant Lab for just $189.

Sony X Headphones: X-Factor or Tech Factor?

When I think of X-Factor, I think of the mutant heroes in the Marvel Universe, not the Simon Cowell’s American Idol knock-off. Sure, Havok can’t belt out any tunes, but he can disintegrate your with his plasma blasts. That being said, these new Sony headphones look good, tech-wise, if you can get past the X-Factor branding.

The Sony X Headphones are aimed at the audio enthusiast market. Despite the X-Factor tie-in, their design is striking and eye catching, and I’ve heard that they are very comfortable to wear for long hours. Naturally, after some time, you’ll probably get the sweaty-ear syndrome, but that can’t be avoided with full-size headphones.

They have 50mm drivers that will deliver a powerful bass directly to your ears. They offer a very wide frequency response range froms 3 to 29,000 Hz and the sensitivity is 106 dB/mW. They also offer an in-line microphone and remote control for use with iOS devices.

The headphones fold up pretty neatly for traveling, though if you are looking for active noise-cancellation, you’ll need to look elsewhere. The Sony X headphones will be available starting September 27th for $300 (USD).

Hi-Call Bluetooth Glove: Talk to the Hand

Do you remember the Bluetooth glove hack that we saw last year? Wasn’t that cute? A silly hack made by a person with silly hair. But no one’s actually going to pay for that right? A company called Hi-Fun begs to disagree.

hi fun hi call bluetooth glove

This is the Hi-Call Bluetooth glove, and yes, the picture above makes no sense at all. Like the hack, the Hi-Call’s left glove has a mic on its pinkie and a speaker on its thumb. There’s also a small control panel near the glove’s wrist. Pair it with any phone that supports Bluetooth connectivity and you’ve got a gloveset. Here’s Engadget’s gloves-on with the product:

You can pre-order the Hi-Call from Hi-Fun for €49.99 (~$64 USD). Strangely enough, there are different sizes for men and women, but none for what might be their real demographic: children.

YouTube Launches Official iPhone App

I bet many iPhone users spend a lot of time streaming video from YouTube on their smartphones when they have time to kill. The iPhone has had native support for YouTube since day one, but thanks to its ongoing war with Google, Apple announced not too long ago that it would be discontinuing support for YouTube natively with iOS 6 (and more than likely with the iPhone 5). YouTube has launched their own solution to that problem. As of today, YouTube has announced the launch of its official iPhone and iPod Touch YouTube app.

youtube iphone app 1

The app can be downloaded on the App Store right now and brings new features that iPhone users haven’t had in the past. First off, the new app allows access to tens of thousands of additional videos since many publishers had restricted playback to when they could monetize their content. Ironically, Apple’s elimination of the built-in YouTube app may actually make Google much more money, now that the app can support pre-roll advertising. Early reviews state that the new app is faster than the Apple bundled app, which hasn’t been updated in a very long time.

In addition, the app also has a channel guide accessed by swiping a finger on the left edge of the screen. The channel guide offers users direct access to all their subscribed channels on YouTube. The app also has new search tools to give video suggestions as you type and allows users to flip through related videos, comments, and more info while watching a video. The app also allows users to share videos they find via Google+, twitter, Facebook, text messages, and e-mail.

Casio Smartwatches: They’ll G-Shock Your Bluetooth

Smartwatches seem to be hot new thing that watchmakers are releasing these days. What I like about Casio’s offering is that it doesn’t look like most smartwatches, instead looking like most of Casio’s G-Shocks.

These new smartwatches are part of Casio’s expansive G-Shock line. The GB-6900AA and GB-5600AA are able to connect to iPhones via Bluetooth. You’ll be able to receive emails alerts as well as notifications on it. There’s even an audio alert to help you find your phone in case you lose it. This can be activated by pressing a single button.

An app will be released alongside the watches, and Casio hasn’t yet announced the US pricing or availability, but they will be released in Japan in October and November for ¥18,000 (~$230 USD).

thumbsUp! Dual SIM Card Case for iPhone 4/4S: Switching Made Easy

Having a phone that can easily switch between SIM cards is very convenient, especially if you travel a lot. Usually, you’d have to manually take out a SIM card and insert another one in its place, unless you’ve got one of those off-market phones with mulitple SIM slots. The thumbsUp! case makes this process easier, if you happen to have an iPhone.

No official iPhone has had a dual-SIM card functionality, which is probably one of the reasons why thumbsUP! released its Dual SIM Card case. The case allows you to carry two SIM cards at the same time. You can switch cards simply by powering down your phone and flipping a switch on the back of the case. It supports micro as well as normal-sized SIM cards. It appears to connect into the iPhone’s SIM slot on the side and then provides its own switching mechanism.

The Dual SIM Card case sells for £29.99 (~$48 USD) and works for the iPhone 4/4S. If you’re planning on upgrading to the new iPhone that will be announced this week, you might want to wait until a compatible case is released.

CupChair: 360-Degree Panormic Product Shots Made Easy

Have you got a cup? And an iPhone? Then all you need to take decent product panoramas is the CupChair app. It’s definitely an interesting combination of cleverness and usefulness.

cupchair rotaryview 360 product app

RotaryView’s CupChair is a way to make 360° panoramic views of stuff that you want to sell, or just things that you want to scan. You just place your iPhone into a cup or mug, point it at the object you want to create a 360 degree shot of. Then, the app does the rest. You just have to hand-rotate your object and let the app take the photos.

The app generates the 360° images automatically, and provides you with an embed code, which doesn’t yet work with Etsy for some reason, which is too bad since that’d be the perfect venue for such images. You’ll also need to purchase a plan from RotaryView to host your 360° images. It starts at $4.99 per month up to $49 per month or $499 per year, depending on the number of products you’re displaying at a time.
