Pong iPhone Anti-Radiation Case Won’t Protect You from Being Nuked

OK, so this phone case isn’t going to actively protect you from the radioactive fallout of a nuclear bomb, but it is supposed to protect you from those harmful radiowaves that are constantly emanating from your precious iPhone.

Pong’s Soft Touch iPhone case incorporates tech that will reduce the exposure to wireless radiation by up to 93%. That’s pretty good. This has been done by redirecting cell phone radiation away from your head and body. No more smartphone-induced brain cancers – if you believe that the radiation is actually doing anything bad to you in the first place.

If that’s isn’t enough, the case has been engineered to improve signal strength by 41%. This means less dropped calls for everyone, though for people living in NYC will probably still experience some. Its makers claim that the improved signal quality will boost talk time by about 1.3 hours as well.

The Pong Soft Case sells for $69.99(USD), and is available in black, pink, light blue or white.

Nendo/Logitec Stylo Bluetooth Headset Looks Like a Sci-Fi Communicator

I admit to owning a Bluetooth headset. This was years ago, and I was often driving in my car, so I needed one to field calls from employees, as well as my bosses and clients. Needless to say that these days, I don’t need one, and rarely talk on my phone. However if you need to talk often on your smartphone, then this Nendo-designed headset looks like a cool choice.

Nendo(JP) designed this ultra-modern headset, called Stylo – the French word for pen – since it looks kind of like one. They designed it for the Japanese company Logitec(JP) (not to be confused with Logitech (WTF?)).

They used anodized aluminum sections for the main housing, and the mechanical guts are packed into a stylus-like shape, which can clip to a front pocket when not in use. The lightweight, 8-gram device has a rechargeable battery that provides you with 5 hours of talk time.

It’s already available in Japan from Logitec and sells for ¥3,480 (~$44 USD).

Google Launches Chromebook Rentals

We talked a bit about Google considering offering rental Chromebook computers in the past. Little over a year ago, the topic came up with prices expected to start at about $20 per month. Google has now announced the launch of rentals for Chromebooks and bulk purchases for its Apps customers.

051111 rg GoogleChromebook 01

The catch is that renting a Chromebook is going to cost you more than we thought last year with prices starting at $30 monthly. After renting the machine for the first 12 months, the rental fleet will go down to $25 per month and then for the third year the rental fee will be $20 per month. The rentals are actually being provided by a 3rd-party, CIT, so you’re not dealing directly with Google for the deal. Granted Chromebooks are relatively inexpensive to begin with so an outright purchase makes a lot more sense, in my opinion.

Google also allow people to rent Chromeboxes, the desktop equivalent to the Chromebook. The rental price for the desktop version of the machine is $25 per month with that rate declining to $18 over time. The best news is that these are month-to-month services, so if you’re not sure a Chromebook is for you at least you can try out for a couple months with no commitment. The bulk purchase of Chromebooks is also available at $599 per unit – with support, which seems very expensive for what you’re getting, but maybe it makes sense to corporate clients.

Nokia Lumia 920: A Bigger and Better Windows Phone?

Unless you’ve been living in a cabin somewhere near a lake or in the woods, you’ve probably heard about Nokia’s Lumia smartphones. The previous models were pretty good, but Nokia’s upped the ante with the Lumia 920, a week or so before the iPhone 5 is set to be announced.

The Nokia Lumia 920 runs Windows Phone 8, packs an 8.7 MP Nokia PureView camera with optical image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics. Under the hood, it’s got a speedy 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 1GB or RAM. Its 1.2 MP 720p front-facing camera will let you video chat with your friends.

nokia lumia 920 smartphone front

The screen looks gorgeous – at 4.5 inches it should do well. Its curved “PureMotion HD+” display offers a crisp 1280 x 768 resolution – even higher res than the iPhone 4S’ 960×640 Retina display. There’s an automatic sunlight reading mode and the ability to sense touch inputs through regular gloves. Its screen will also respond to fingernail touches, which is good for people with longer nails.

The phone comes with 32 GB of built-in storage. Though it doesn’t have a microSD-card slot, so it’s not expandable – though you do get 7GB of SkyDrive online storage as well. It’s equipped with a Qi-compatible wireless charging battery, which is nice and has a 2,000 mAh capacity. The price hasn’t been announced yet, and it will be released in Q4 2012.

Spaho Design’s Ripple Case Puts an Optical Illusion on Your iPhone

I’m not sure how well cases with holes will actually protect your iPhone, but since there are some available from major manufacturers, they must help at least a little, right? If you don’t mind having a case with holes in the back, then check out the 3D printed Ripple case.

The Ripple case design was obtained after modifying one with straight lines. The series of curvy opening creates a pattern which produces a sort of 3D optical illusion, which is definitely unusual.

It was created by Spaho Design and it’s available through Shapeways for $30(USD), and you can choose from a number of different materials if you’re going to get one.

Getac Z710 Rugged Android Tablet Ready to Take a Beating

In the Android tablet realm there are plain and boring tablets that might not survive even the most gently of falls, and then there are those that can take a beating and still work. Getac has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s most rugged Android tablet aimed at use in extreme work environments. If Q ever gave James Bond an Android tablet, the Z710 would be it.

getac z710

The tablet uses Getac’s LumiBond technology that combines a glove-friendly touchscreen display with a Gorilla Glass screen, a capacitive touch sensor, and an LED backlit panel. The technology gives touch sensitivity even while wearing gloves and allows the tablet to be extremely durable. The tablet measures 8.5 x 5.6 by a little over one-inch thick and weighs slightly less than 2 pounds. It was created to MIL-STD 810G / IP65 specs. That means it’s able to survive a drop of up to 6 feet, and is certified for resistance against dust and liquid as well as a wide range of operating temperatures (from -4°F to 122°F).

The tablet has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, available 3G, and a fast SiRFstarIV GPS chipset. It also has a front camera and a five-megapixel rear camera. Since it’s designed for commercial and industrial use, it also has a barcode scanner and RFID reader built in. The tablet is very expensive though, with the standard Z710 selling for $1499(USD) and the 3G version selling for $1799. Both versions will ship in October.

Pogo Connect iPad Pressure Sensitive Stylus Price and Release Date Announced

Styluses aren’t just for Samsung devices, there are plenty available for iPads and iPhones. While most of them are pretty crappy, the most interesting are the ones that can connect to your iPad via Bluetooth and convey pressure sensitive information.

pogo connect lap stylus ipad drawing

Ten One Design’s Pogo Connect will start shipping this October. You’ll get months of battery life from a single AAA battery, and thanks to Bluetooth 4.0, there’s no need to turn it off. It uses solid state pressure sensing, offering hundreds of levels of sensitivity with no moving parts. Unfortunately, the stylus still has to have a relatively fat 7mm tip in order to work with the iPad’s capacitive screen.

If you don’t have the new iPad, there will be an app available that will allow you to make the Pogo Connect work with the iPad 1 and 2 as well – but this requires access to an iPhone 4S (or the upcoming new iPhone 5) to act as a Bluetooth 4.0 bridge. The Connect relies on third-party app makers to build support for it, as Apple doesn’t offer any system-level protocol for dealing with pressure sensitivity over Bluetooth. However, there are already a number of apps, including Paper, Procreate and Sketchbook Pro, which will be compatible with it.

The stylus retails for $79.95(USD), and if you’re one of the first 2,000 pre-orders, then you’ll get custom laser engraving on the pen as well.

TDK Wireless Charging Speaker: Play & Charge At The Same Time

Usually, when I play music on my phone, it drains the battery, unless I have it docked. Thanks to this new charging dock/speaker from TDK, I can play and charge at the same time, without any wires or even a dock connector. Now that’s pretty neat, because I wouldn’t want to give the cable squid under my desk and computer more cables to procreate.

The TDK Wireless Charging Speaker comes with a built-in Qi-compatible inductive charging pad on top, allowing you to charge your device while it’s playing music. Naturally, this sucker comes with Bluetooth, so you need no wires at all to play your tunes either. The built-in rechargeable battery will provide you with 6 hours of playback, though it’s unclear if the inductive charging works when on battery power, or if only when plugged in.

It also is weatherized for outdoor use, and comes with four full range left/right speakers, a ported subwoofer, a 3.5mm input for non-wireless connections as well as a 1 Amp USB charging port. All this wireless wizardry doesn’t come cheap. The TDK Wireless Charging Speaker will retail for $399.95(USD).

Tokyoflash Kisai Zone: A Hex Face in a Round Hole

Modern Japanese digital watches are definitely an acquired taste, but once you decipher how to read the time, you end up with a functional watch. This new watch from Tokyoflash doesn’t encrypt the time, so you won’t have to take a minute each time you consult it. Once you understand the display, it’s very easy to read.

tokyoflash kisai zone hex display

The Tokyoflash Kisai Zone watch displays numbers in hexagonal form, and comes with a stainless or black strap, with a body to match. There are blue, green, purple or black options available for the LCD display.

The display is constantly moving, and since it’s LCD, you won’t have to push a button to activate it (though it does have an EL backlight for nighttime viewing.) The numbers for the current time are simply forced into hexagonal shapes, as shown in this demo video:

See, not hard to read at all. Plus, those animation modes are pretty cool too.

The Kisai Zone is currently on sale at Tokyoflash for $99(USD). After the two day launch period, it will revert to $139, so if you’re interested, you’d better grab it.

iPhone 5 Images Leaked (We Think)

It seems like Apple’s getting pretty bad at keeping its secrets. Either that, or people are just getting better at uncovering them. While they don’t have a complete, working phone, the folks over at China’s iColorOS somehow managed to get their hands on various parts of the iPhone 5 to assemble their very own version of the device.

iPhone 5dBy parts, we mean the exterior stuff like the case and metal plates because I’m sure no one would be able to leave Apple HQ with the actual insides of an iPhone 5 and live to tell the world about it. (I’m kidding. I think.)

Here’s what the leaked images prove:

  • The iPhone 5 has a bigger screen compared to its predecessor – around 0.5 inches larger, providing a true 16×9 aspect ratio for video content.
  • It’s going to come with a smaller dock port, so say goodbye to the 30-pin dock.
  • The FaceTime camera has been re-positioned to somewhere on top of the ear receiver.
  • The earphone jack has been moved to the bottom of the device, by the speakers.

iPhone 5d 150x150
iPhone 5e 150x150
iPhone 5f 150x150
iPhone 5g 150x150

Of course, the exterior of the iPhone 5 tells us nothing about what’s going on under the hood, like whether or not it’s running a new A6 chip or the same A5 from the current iPad, nor does it tell us about the display’s resolution, or any other hardware improvements, like the hotly-anticipated 4G connectivity. Guess we’ll just have to wait until Apple’s September 12 event for the full reveal.
