Click Wall Switch Watch Flips Time on and off

For a watch to look cool and modern, it doesn’t need to be complicated. Although this watch looks like one of those complex Japanese digital watches, it’s not. You just flip its the wall switch face and it lights up to tell you what time it is.

The Click Wall Switch Watch activates when you press on its face and switch on the LED display. It’s a very simple design that makes telling the time very straightforward. The nice, retro LED display reminds me of an old calculator but it can even tell the date thanks to the third position of the switch. There are some animations as well.

You can pretend that you switch time off and on, but you can buy the watch for $99.99(USD) from ThinkGeek or Watchismo in black, blue, red or silver.

Mobi Lens Clips onto Just About Any Smartphone or Tablet Camera

Add-on lenses for smartphones are one of the easiest ways of improving your mobile photography. I’ve seen some magnetic lenses, but what happens when your precious phone is hidden away underneath a protective case? Mobi-Lens comes to the rescue with an interesting design for a clip-on lens that will solve your woes.

Mobi-Lens is a clip-on lens system for mobile devices that features a lens on each side. You’ll have access to a fisheye and macro/wide-angle lens depending on which side you favor. While the design isn’t the most elegant, it does seem quite functional and versatile, thanks to its spring-loaded, Chip-Clip style design.

The Mobi-Lens was launched as a Kickstarter crowd-funded project, and you’ll need to pledge at least $30(USD) to get a single lens, and $60 or more for the two lens combo pack.

Gliph App Creates Anonymous & Disposable Email Addresses

There is always a need for disposable and secure email addresses. I had a bunch of junk Hotmail addresses years ago for handling spam and subscriptions I didn’t want going to my main email address. Thanks to Gmail, I’ve whittled it down to only one, but maybe I should just dispose of it and get the Gliph app. It’s basically, this app is like the Burner app we featured a couple of days ago, but for email addresses.

gliph email app setup burner

Gliph is a free app for iPhones, Android and mobile devices. You can use it to send cloaked messages to other Gliph users or use it to send and receive emails to anyone through your regular email client. An example would be Craigslist transactions, which are always somewhat spammy. Unlike other free services like Gmail and Hotmail, Gliph email addresses are easy to create and delete, and all your emails sent via your addresses come to a central location, so there’s no need to log on onto multiple accounts.

When you open the app, you get to pick a string of 3 to 5 icons that represents you, instead of using a username. You get one free randomly generated email address when you sign up for Gliph, and once you’ve invited at least 5 friends, you can send attachments too.

ChargeCard Micro USB Version Hits Kickstarter

Back in late July, we talked a bit about the ChargeCard for the iPhone. The device is a credit card-sized charger that allows you to connect your iPhone to your computer USB port for charging and synchronization. That’s all fine and good if you use an iPhone, but if you’re on Android or another device the original ChargeCard will do you no good.

chargecard microusb

The developers behind the iPhone version have now unveiled the promised micro USB version. This version of the ChargeCard works exactly like the original only instead of an iPhone connector on one end it has a small micro USB connector. The USB portion of the micro USB ChargeCard is still flexible just like the iPhone version.

The micro USB ChargeCard comes in white, black, and bird. The bird version is black with white birds printed on the outside. The project only has 11 days to go before it’s funded and already has raised over $136,000, nearly triple the $50,000 goal the developers started with – so there’s no question that it will go into production. If you want one, head over to Kickstarter now, and pledge at least $20(USD) before the fundraising closes.

iBikeConsole BikeCharge Dynamo Charges Your Gear While Your Ride Your Bike

Bicycle lights generally use battery or solar-powered LEDs these days, not bike dynamos like in the 1980s. That doesn’t mean that these types of tiny power stations aren’t still useful. I’ve seen a couple of different ones allowing you to charge up your devices simply by pedaling a bit more. The BikeCharge will take this to a new level since it generates more current and is lighter than other models.

iBikeConsole’s BikeCharge Dynamo is a mounted DC power generator and it works with most smartphone brands. It’s supposed to charge up your phone in 2 to 3 hours, which isn’t bad – especially if you’re going for  It’s weatherproof, and the all-in-one design is 20% lighter than other systems of this nature. There’s a quick-release clutch that will allow you to disengage the dynamo when you aren’t in need of the extra power, though it’s designed to add minimal drag to your pedaling efforts when engaged. It’s also got a front LED light and two rear red LED lights, which can stay illuminated for up to 2 hours after you stop riding.

The BikeCharge Dynamo sells for $99.99(USD) but is currently out of stock.

Cardiio App Uses MIT Tech to Measure Your Heart Rate By Looking at Your Face

I’ve got a heart rate monitor, but it’s tied to a strap that connects wirelessly to my Garmin 500 cycling computer. There are also numerous smartphone apps which can measure your pulse when you cover up the camera and flash with your fingertip. But the Cardiio app for iOS uses MIT technology to measure your heart rate without even a touch, simply by “looking” at your face.

cardiio iphone app heart rate no wires

Cardiio measures when your face is reflecting more light and when it’s not, giving you a semi-accurate idea of what your heart rate is without having to strap a sensor to your wrist or chest. The slight increase in blood volume to your face whenever your heart beats causes more light to be absorbed, hence it is less reflected. Using this, the app tracks these changes and calculates your heart rate.

According to one study, the technology is accurate to within 3 beats-per-minute of a clinical pulse oximeter in a well-lit environment. Cardiio is available through iTunes for $4.99 (USD), and is compatible with the iPhone 4/4S, iPad 2 and above and 4th gen iPod Touch.

JavaScript/HTML5 GameBoy Color Emulator: Beat Bowser on Your Browser

Old consoles never die, they just get digitized. The Game Boy Color is one such system. You can find emulators of it running on PCs, Macs, PSPs, smartphones and even calculators. Here’s a GBC emulator for the cloud age: a JavaScript & HTML5 emulator that you can play on your browser.

game boy color emulator by grant galitz

The emulator was written by Software Engineering student Grant Galitz. Like most browser games, it doesn’t need you to install anything on your computer. It even has built-in games! You can also load .gb or .gbc files, although I wasn’t able to test that. I also don’t know how the emulator handles game saves.

Technically the emulator can run even on mobile browsers, but it was slow and unplayable on my iPad 2. Perhaps newer devices will fare better. Check out the emulator on Grant’s website before Nintendo falcon punches it down. You can also check out its source code at GitHub.

Scosche boomSTREAM Bluetooth Speaker: Wireless Tunes with a Little Extra Boom

Bluetooth speakers are pretty convenient, since they allow you to share your tunes wirelessly and you can use many different kinds of devices, like smartphones and tablets, as audio sources. Scosche’s boomSTREAM wireless speaker is yet another option for streaming your music over Bluetooth.

scosche boomstream bluetooth speaker

The boomSTREAM speaker has dual 40mm drivers and a passive subwoofer to give your music a little extra low end. The speaker is the kind that goes anywhere, thanks to the 8 hours of continuous playback you get from the built-in rechargeable lithium polymer battery. Or you can give your smartphone an extra quick juice-up thanks to the USB charging port.

Scosche is selling this speaker for $99.99(USD). To put that price in perspective, that’s half the cost of the Jawbone JAMBOX. Only time will tell if the sound quality is as good as Jawbone’s offering.
