Foursquare’s BlackBerry 10 app updated to add features that iOS users already enjoy

Foursquare's BlackBerry 10 app updated to add features that iOS users already enjoy

Heads-up, BB10 users — checking in just got a little less second-class. Foursquare has today issued an update to its BlackBerry 10 app that effectively brings it closer in line with the version already available for iOS users. For starters, there’s a more compact Explore screen, and your friends can now be tagged in check-ins and comments. For big spenders (or frugal ones, we guess), Visa and MasterCard specials can now be taken advantage of by Z10 users. Per usual, it also ironed out a few miscellaneous bugs along the way, and you can get your update in the source link below.

HP and Samsung offer setup-free printing on the Galaxy S 4, with others to follow

Samsung Galaxy S 4 top crop

As ubiquitous as wireless printing has become, there remains the occasional hoop to jump through for printing from mobile devices if you don’t happen to have either a special app or iOS gear that supports AirPrint. HP and Samsung are teaming up to remove many of the headaches for the Galaxy S 4: when the phone launches in April, it should have setup-free WiFi printing to almost 200 HP inkjets and LaserJets, as long as any given printer is either on the same network or is otherwise accessible through direct printing. Don’t expect ubiquitous support, though. Beyond being limited to the one phone, you’ll have to stick to some of its preloaded apps, including the browser, contacts, email client, photo gallery, Polaris Office and S Note. It’s far from a truly universal solution, then, but the two partners are at least promising zero-setup printing on both the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II through firmware updates coming later in 2013. We’ll take the approach if it saves time snagging an old-fashioned boarding pass or some concert tickets.

Foursquare for Android now greets newcomers, says what’s fresh for locals

Foursquare for Android now says which places are new or hot where you are

Foursquare gave more adventurous iOS users an updated Explore section at the start of the month that, among many other things, better highlighted either just-opened locations or the hottest places to be. It’s the Android crowd’s turn to check out new scenes: their updated Foursquare app will tell a traveler what sights and sounds are worth catching when visiting a new location, and better emphasizes what’s new for anyone on familiar turf. If you’re a tourist worried about fitting in like a local, or just want to check out a fresh location before it’s ruined by popularity, hit the Google Play link at the source.

Sony Xperia SP render possibly spied, puts the Xperia Z design in a smaller package

Sony Xperia SP render possibly spied, stuffs Xperia Z design into a smaller package

So you’re enamored with the Xperia Z’s premium look, but not the slightly hand-defying 5-inch screen size. There might not be reason to worry: an apparent press-quality image making the rounds in China shows the Xperia SP (aka Huashan), which now seems to be a more compact expression of Sony’s Omnibalance design. The render doesn’t suggest much on its own besides a familiar software layout, although previous rumors have hinted that it could be a slightly reworked Xperia T with a similar 4.6-inch 720p display, a faster 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 and a scaled back 8-megapixel camera. While there’s nothing here to validate talk of a launch as soon as next week, the existence of a seemingly final press shot implies that there won’t be long to wait for the real deal.

Google My Tracks update brings Drive integration and a lock screen widget

Google gives My Tracks athletes Drive integration and a lock screen widget

Cyclists and runners with Android phones have had a rare first-party option for keeping tabs on their performance through Google’s My Tracks, but the app hasn’t been entirely in step with those who upgrade their OS as quickly as they barrel down the street. It’s back on pace with a quiet update: My Tracks now has a customizable lock screen widget for Android 4.2 users who want to know their distance or speed details at a glance. Whether or not you’re running the latest and greatest Android version, the upgrade will sync finished tracks with Google Drive for safekeeping and sharing; extra-competitive types can also import KML files and view others’ tracks for comparisons. Hit the source link if time (or simple oneupmanship) is of the essence.

Xolo X1000 reaches India, mates a 2GHz Atom with a 4.7-inch screen for $369

Xolo X1000 mates 2GHz Atom with a 47inch screen for $369

For all the credit the Xolo X900 earned as the first Intel-based smartphone, it grew long in the tooth very quickly between that 4-inch screen and 1.6GHz Atom chip. The solution, naturally, is a straight-up modernization like the X1000. The new smartphone jumps to a more contemporary 4.7-inch, 720p LCD and the same 2GHz Atom Z2480 that we saw in the RAZR i. Most other components won’t rock the boat for those who bought in last year, though. There’s still the familiar high-speed 8-megapixel rear camera as well as a 1.3-megapixel camera at the front, 1GB of RAM, 21Mbps HSPA+ 3G and 8GB of expandable storage. The X1000 is even using Ice Cream Sandwich instead of some flavor of Jelly Bean. Still, the price is right — a contract-free 19,999 rupees ($369) for the Indian debut could have at least a few customers willing to bring some Intel Inside.

Microsoft updates its Windows Phone web demo for WP8, hopes you’ll update your phone too

Microsoft updates its Windows Phone web demo for WP8

Microsoft remains convinced that you’ll like Windows Phone if you only give it a try. Accordingly, it just recently updated its web-based demo to reflect all the changes in Windows Phone 8. If you let the web app access Facebook, you’ll get a personalized sample of the OS on your desktop or mobile browser that includes resizable home tiles, Kid’s Corner and other newer additions. No, it’s not a full-fledged simulator, but it does give about as good a taste as you’ll get without the real hardware in your hands. We also can’t say that everyone will be sold on the concept — still, it’s worth a spin for anyone keeping their smartphone options open.

LG trolls Samsung’s Times Square billboards with Optimus G ‘4’ ads

LG trolls Samsung's Times Square billboards with Optimus G '4' ads

The press is headed to Radio City Music Hall for Samsung’s Galaxy S IV event in a few hours, but the company has also taken up consumer-focused presence in Times Square — where rival LG is waiting. As shown in the pic, LG has refashioned its billboards (which it already occupied for 20 years before the new neighbor moved in below last year) to mock Samsung’s “4” themed advertising, touting that the Optimus G is “here 4 you now”, among other messages. They’d probably have a better chance of grabbing our attention if the upgraded Optimus G Pro were here 4 us instead, but that’s not an option yet. Still, we have to appreciate a prank pulled off well enough that it even scores some screen time in a Samsung promo video (at :49 and 2:04) embedded after the break.

Goophone i5S KIRFs the iPhone 5S early, gives the iPhone 4S a run for its money (video)

Goophone i5S KIRFs the iPhone 5S early, gives the iPhone 4S a run for its money video

Ah, Goophone. The company that made its name keepin’ it real fake with eerily similar clones of other companies’ devices, sometimes before the originals have even launched. It’s clearly not dropping that tradition anytime soon, as it just previewed the i5S, an attempt to preempt the supposed iPhone 5S before even the rumor mill has produced anything tangible. As you’d almost expect, it’s really a not-very-subtle imitation of the current iPhone 5 body and software that does its best to mask the use of Android (this time Jelly Bean) rather than iOS. Don’t think that Goophone has learned any more about shadowing Apple on the technology front, however. The i5S is running hardware that would sometimes be trounced by a 2011-era iPhone 4S, including a dual-core 1GHz MediaTek processor, 512MB of RAM, an 854 x 480 screen and a 5-megapixel rear camera. The firm is mostly banking on absurdly low pricing to make up for the sleight-of-hand — at its $150 launch price, the i5S costs a fraction of the real iPhone 5’s price while undercutting the older yet somehow more sophisticated Goophone i5. Catch a video demo of the uncanny facsimile after the break.
