About a week ago, we went hands-on with LG’s new mid-range LTE-capable Optimus F5 and F7 smartphones at MWC. At the time it was unknown where these handsets would land in the US, but it appears that we now have the goods on the former. According to a pair of alleged press shots obtained by UnwiredView, LG’s F5 will be showing up on Verizon in the not so distant future. Said to be a follow up to last year’s Lucid, this mid-tier device’s main bullet points include a modest 4.3-inch qHD display, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera (capable of 1080p video capture) and Android 4.1.2. Sure, the Lucid 2’s specs remind us more of a keyboard shortcut and less of a powerful storm — we just hope that its price tag will also be a refresh. If so, that should make this device a considerable option for first-time smartphone buyers looking to make the jump to LTE.

We know that Verizon is adding at least one more Nokia Lumia to its stable in the near future. However, there’s been little in tangible evidence to suggest just what’s coming to the carrier’s Windows Phone line. A purported leak to Phone Arena from Verizon’s internal product listings could help fill in that picture. It mentions a Lumia 928, and not much else — but Nokia’s naming customs immediately suggest that this will be Big Red’s rumored variant of the Lumia 920, which is currently limited to AT&T in the US. The device isn’t necessarily connected to the RM-860 we saw at the FCC, although it does support murmurs that Verizon wants at least some kind of improvement over the strictly middling Lumia 822. If the 928 is real, we’re mostly left wondering whether or not it will come quickly enough to remain relevant.

We caught up with Greg Sullivan — senior product manager of Windows Phone — for an early morning chat during Mobile World Congress. He was kind enough to give us an update on the state of Microsoft’s mobile OS, which has apparently experienced a four-fold increase in sales since version 8 launched last fall and is taking share away from Android in the UK. We discussed the delightful user experience provided by lower-end Windows Phone 8 handsets like Nokia’s Lumia 620 and asked how Microsoft plans to satisfy power users at the higher-end of the spectrum who are still missing critical features such as proper notifications, quick settings and CalDAV / CardDAV support (to name a few). It’s clear that the company’s aware of these shortcomings and is working to remedy most of them in a future release. We also talked about the ecosystem, what Microsoft is doing to improve app quality, how it meshes with Windows 8 / RT and whether the company is looking to expand its partnership beyond existing device manufacturers. Trust. It’s a valuable commodity. But serial twitter-sleuth evleaks has done enough to earn ours for this latest leak. A Windows Phone 8 device — apparently known internally as the Tiara — which will be one of the first to run the next revision of the mobile operating system (GDR2). With a reported 4.3-inch display, a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera and 1GB of RAM, it bears more than a resemblance to another recent addition to the HTC fold. If you had hopes that it might also borrow from the firm’s latest Android flagship design, then sorry to dash them, as the sources suggest otherwise. The Tiara moniker is unlikely to remain, with evleaks taking a stab at it coming to market mid-May, possibly as the HTC 8W. Not a bad guess. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if all that trust is truly well placed.

Just because Huawei has already launched a small torrent of smartphones two months into 2013 doesn’t mean the company is taking a vacation anytime soon. Evleaks has spotted what’s purported to be the Ascend G710, a not-quite-high-end smartphone that would sit just below the Ascend D2. While it would preserve the 5-inch screen and 1.5GHz quad-core processor, it would dip to a 720p resolution. There’s hints that it may be more a step sideways, however, through some less performance-minded changes: the G710 would have a premium-looking metal (or metal-effect) back, free up screen real estate with capacitive navigation buttons and talk to both CDMA and GSM networks. When the camera, storage and the all-important launch plans are still missing, though, there’s a long way to go before we know where this latest Ascend might sit in Huawei’s catalog.
