Engadget Mobile Podcast 166

Yeah, we had two podcasts during CES, but that doesn’t mean we’re done with it just yet. Still sleep-deprived and filled with excitement from the show floor, it’s time to catch up on the tech we didn’t get a chance to discuss — and the stuff we couldn’t get enough of. Is octa-core really CPU related or a villain from the world of Batman? Is Samsung’s Youm a new dessert or some exciting flexible display technology? Is T-Mobile poised to conquer the mobile realm this year? Most importantly, is everything that happened prior to CES officially a blur for Myriam and Brad? You’ll just have to tune in to find out!

Hosts: Myriam Joire (tnkgrl), Brad Molen

Producer: Joe Pollicino

Music: TychoCoastal Brake (Ghostly International)

Google+ iOS app now available in 48 more countries and territories

Google iOS apps now available in 48 more countries and territories

If Google+ wants any chance of beating the social media juggernaut that is Facebook — especially after the latter’s latest efforts in the search arena — it needs to reach a far wider audience than it does now. The Mountain View company has just made a small but significant step in that direction with the availability of its G+ iOS app to 48 more countries and territories, according to a G+ post by engineer Frank Petterson. The countries listed — Bermuda, Cambodia, Malawi and Nepal, just to name a few — aren’t necessarily known for their large populations, but we’re sure Google will accept anything that’ll help Larry Page make his case against Zuckerberg and crew. To find out which new areas will let you download that G+ app from the App Store, check out the source below.

BlackBerry 10 camera app flaunts filters, transformation tools (video)

BlackBerry 10 camera app flaunts filters, transformation tools video

What’s better than a non-functional prototype? One that actually works, of course. The Gadget Masters have apparently been spending time with a pre-production version of RIM’s upcoming Z10 smartphone, and plundered its camera app in the process. The ensuing video (after the break) didn’t reveal any new features, but carries the novelty of actually manipulating an image with the app’s tools. After snapping a picture of the carpet (daring!), our host leads us through a few filters, mentioning the app’s ability to crop and transform images. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s good to see a fully functional version of the app. After all, Thorsten Heins’ big event is just around the corner.

EE closing 78 overly cozy stores, keeps related staff

EE closing 78 overly close stores, keeps related staff

Merging two carriers’ efforts invariably creates at least some kind of redundancy, no matter how much the two sides try to avoid it. In EE’s case, it led to stores that were suddenly too close to each other — so close that some were very literally next door. Rather than perpetuate the inadvertent comedy, EE says it’s shuttering 78 stores that it believes are just wasting space. The provider doesn’t want to put added strain on the remaining shops, however. It plans to move all affected staff to existing locations, and it’s hoping to repurpose managers rather than oust them. The scaled-back retail operations theoretically “maintain momentum” while keeping customers and workers happy, EE tells us. When we see genuinely absurd situations like the photo above, we’re inclined to agree.

IK Multimedia’s iRig HD adapter for iOS, Mac lets guitars ride the Lightning port

IK Multimedia's iRig HD adapter lets guitars ride the Lightning port

IK Multimedia spent a lot of time at CES 2013 courting Android musicians, but we neglected to mention equal attention spent on iOS at the show through the iRig HD. The company’s new adapter pipes audio from a guitar or other instrument with a quarter-inch plug into Lightning-equipped Apple devices, keeping them in IK’s musical world (and inviting terrible Metallica puns). It’s not exclusively built to jam with an iPad mini or iPhone 5, either, as a modular approach brings the analog-to-digital conversion both to earlier iOS gear and to Macs’ USB ports through relevant adapters. About the only disappointment is the absence of firm launch details, although those should be coming “soon.”

Samsung flaunts amber brown, ruby wine Galaxy Note IIs to pair with your drapes

Samsung flaunts amber brown, wine Galaxy Note IIs to match your dinette set

Were you hoping to get that Galaxy Note II in a cooler color than marble or titanium gray, like maybe hotrod red? Would you settle for “amber brown” or “ruby wine,” to perhaps match that chaise lounge? That’s good, because Samsung has decided to out the 5.5-inch phablet in those trendily specific colors on January 17th, in Korea at least — though given the five million plus units sold so far, it’s earned the right to tint the Note II however it wants. The new hues will blanket the front, back and S-Pen of the device, but we’re not sure if we’re fashion-forward enough to rock “ruby wine” — especially on a loud & proud handset like that.

HTC One SV goes on sale at Cricket with a slight price drop

HTC One SV hands-on

Cricket gave us a pleasant surprise when it committed to carrying the cheap-yet-cheerful HTC One SV this month, and it’s making good on that promise today. The Android 4.0-touting smartphone is on sale now for a lower than expected $330 contract-free, albeit only for those shopping online. It’s not the most powerful device on the network, but it also strikes a balance between bargain pricing and speed: buyers get LTE, rapid-fire photography and a modern dual-core processor without having to splurge on a flagship like the Galaxy S III. Hit the source link if the middle road sounds like the best road.

Sprint offering Total Equipment insurance for iPhone on January 25th

Sprint offering Total Equipment insurance for iPhone on January 25th

After opting not to offer its Total Equipment Protection (TEP) service to iPhone customers, Sprint appears to have turned over a new leaf. An anonymous tipster has shared an internal screenshot with us noting that starting on January 25th, the carrier will start allowing its iPhone users to select TEP as an equipment insurance option. Similar to its policy with AppleCare+, Sprint will give customers 30 days from the date of purchase to add TEP to their account at a monthly charge of $11. However, unlike Apple’s in-house coverage plan, Total Equipment Protection claims come with hefty deductibles ranging from $150 – $200, instead of a one time upfront charge. So, if you were looking to pick up an iPhone from Sprint and AppleCare+ wasn’t exactly ringing your bell, you’ll soon have an additional insurance option in less than a fortnight.

AT&T to begin pushing OTA Jelly Bean update to Galaxy S III users today

AT&T to begin pushing OTA Jelly Bean update to Galaxy S III users today

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S III on AT&T have had the opportunity to download and install Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) since early December, but the rollout was kept rather quiet and the ROM was limited to ambitious souls willing to install and use Kies — Samsung’s proprietary desktop software — to get it. Finally, AT&T has told us that an OTA (over-the-air) update will be available beginning today to anyone who is still using Ice Cream Sandwich, though it’ll require a WiFi connection. Still, this is a much better situation for the vast majority of GS3 users who may not have even realized that an update was even offered to them in the first place.

AT&T offering $100 credit to Nexus 7 owners, two-year contract required

DNP AT&T offering $100 credit to HSPA Nexus 7 owners in exchange for a twoyear service agreement

Have you considered picking up an HSPA+ Nexus 7? If so, AT&T‘s latest promotion might have what it takes to influence your decision. Customers who sign up for an eligible two-year data plan will receive a $100 bill credit on their freshly inked covenant. Sure, locking your unlocked device to a carrier isn’t the most ideal strategy, but if you’re into mobile monogamy and AT&T’s services meet your needs — then by all means you have our blessings. However, you may have to hurry up and pop the question, as this offer comes to an end on February 14th.
