Firefox for Android adds support for select smartphones with ARMv6 processors

Firefox on Android has been a luxury that devices running Google’s mobile OS with ARMv7 processors have had, but now Mozilla is broadening its browser’s horizons. Now, the latest version of Firefox’s mobile incarnation adds support for phones sporting ARMv6 processors with minimum speeds of 800mhz alongside at least 512MB of RAM. With those specs, that brings the HTC ChaCha and Status, LG Optimus Q, Motorola Fire XT, Samsung Galaxy Ace and others into the fold. In addition, the browser’s latest version brings Explore by Touch support on Jelly Bean and hardware and software decoding of H.264, AAC and MP3 formats on Android 4.0 and 4.1 devices. Fixes that address instability on Android 4.2 and text deletion issues also tag along in the release. To get your mitts on the download, simply tap the second source link below.

Samsung Movies UK coming to an end, final screening on December 15th

DNP Samsung Movies UK closing its doors on December 15th

After over a three year run,the Acetrax-powered Samsung Movies is about to fade to black. We received an email advising UK subscribers that the service will no longer be available as of December 15th and that its website would drift into oblivion. It’s uncertain if this will affect customers in other European territories, but Acetrax references its plans to offer extended service for those looking to continue after Samsung Movies officially meets its maker. In addition to deep-sixing the service, the gloomy message advises that support has ended for the Galaxy Tab, Galaxy S, Wave, S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition, S7350 Classico, M7600 Beat DJ, i8910 HD and Jet. Check out a snapshot of the customer email after the break.

US Cellular promo brings unlimited LTE to smartphone owners for $40 per month, but tethering is another $20

DNP US Cellular now serving all you can eat data for $40 per month

A US Cellular rep confirmed today that the carrier is now offering a new unlimited 4G LTE data plan. Customers within the company’s LTE markets can now add unlimited 4G data for $40 per month — only through January 31st of next year, though. If surfing the web on a smartphone isn’t enough, you can add optional tethering for an additional $20, which requires a separate tiered hotspot data plan. Just in time for the holidays, this ample offering lines up with the carrier’s recent LTE expansion and its plan to bring 4G access to 58 percent of its customers by the end of the year. In addition to this promotional data plan, US Cellular is offering a $100 instant rebate on select smartphones, including the Huawei Ascend Y and Samsung Galaxy S III. Not stopping there, anyone who purchases a smartphone or tablet can score a free Samsung SCH-LC11 hotspot. It’s uncertain if this is truly unlimited data or the type that comes with a throttled cap. So, we’d caution you not to go on a Netflix and Pandora binge, as such activities could result in a nastygram from US Cellular for use beyond what the fine print allows.

Huawei Ascend W1 makes an appearance in Blue and White

Huawei Ascend W1 makes an appearance in Blue and White

We’ve kept anxious eyes on Huawei’s Ascend W1 for a while now, so imagine our disappointment when it was a no-show at the Windows Phone 8 launch. Fortunately, a Huawei employee has tweeted a pair of pictures that show the device in all of its budget-handset glories. Gone are the rounded corners of handsets like the Ascend D Quad, in favor of a boxier aesthetic that sits well with Metro Windows 8 Style whatever we’re calling it this week. Hardware-wise, it’s believed to be carrying a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 4-inch, 800 x 480 display, 2,000mAh battery and a 5-megapixel camera. There’s also an unconfirmed rumor that we’ll first see the China-exclusive device at CES 2013, breaking the hearts of impoverished westerners everywhere.

Samsung ATIV S for Vodafone UK goes up for pre-order at Phones4U with a December launch

Samsung ATIV S hands-on

Brits looking to score Samsung’s ATIV S flagship on Vodafone can start forming an orderly queue. UK reseller Phones4U is offering pre-orders for the Windows Phone 8 darling to those willing to sign a two-year contract, giving it away for free on a £33 ($52) plan with 600 minutes, unlimited text, 500MB of cellular data and 2GB on WiFi. Pay a pound more per month ($54) as well as £30 for the device ($48) and the subscription jumps to both unlimited minutes as well as 2GB of cellular use. Unfortunately, the wait for this biggest-screened Windows Phone may be a long one — while Samsung has only confirmed a December launch for the ATIV S in the UK, Phones4U has the smartphone reaching customers on December 21st. If that’s accurate, we’d make sure there’s some leftover wrapping paper in case the ATIV S becomes a gift, even if it’s to yourself.

Nokia leak suggests there’s something between Windows Phone 7.8 and 8

Leak suggests there's meat between Windows Phone 7.8 and 8

Owners of older Windows Phones who expect to run out of railroad after 7.8 could actually have some cause for hope — meager though it may be. A leaked slide, said to originate from a 25-page Nokia roadmap sent to WParea by an anonymous tipster, points toward at least one more update after Windows Phone 7.8 lands. However, it’s clear that whoever drew up the slide isn’t fully in the know, since the mystery version is simply described as “7.x.”. Meanwhile, the official Russian Windows Phone Twitter account has also kept the wheels rolling by promising 18 months of support for 7.8. We can’t exactly vouch for this either, since the tweet appears to have been deleted, but it does suggest that those last-year Lumias will keep chugging on for a good while longer.

CIBC Mobile Payment App reaches BlackBerry App World for the rare chance you can actually use it

CIBC Mobile Payment App reaches BlackBerry App World for the rare chance you can actually use it

Rogers kicked off Canadian NFC mobile payments at the start of the month through what was mostly a ceremonial gesture — until the CIBC app arrived, locals simply had to wait. It’s at last time try some Suretap mobile shopping now that the CIBC Mobile Payment App has popped up in BlackBerry App World. As promised, the title will let Canucks tap to pay with a credit card (up to $50 at once) at the 17 store chains offering use of a MasterCard PayPass or Visa PayWave terminal. The catch remains the sheer number of conditions that need to be in place: on top of requiring an NFC-aware SIM card, a CIBC credit card and the right stores, the early software only works its magic with the BlackBerry Bold 9900; Curve 9380 support depends on a future update. Having the crucial app is still a step forward, and the handful of trailblazers can always recount tales of buying Timbits with their Bolds while those on other platforms have to sit tight until 2013.

LG F240 possibly spied in benchmarks packing 1080p screen, Snapdragon S4 Pro

LG F240 possibly spied in benchmarks packing 1080p screen, Snapdragon S4 Po

LG’s Optimus G (and Nexus 4) might have been the resolution champion among non-phablet Android phones for only a brief moment before the HTC Droid DNA arrived, but there’s clues surfacing that LG may fight its way back to a draw. Following hints through browser profiles, a set of results on GLBenchmark have appeared for an unconfirmed LG F240 wielding a 1080p screen resolution; given the allusions to Korean phone carriers like KT and LG’s earlier decision to back away from tablets, we suspect that it’s something pocketable. The F240 could otherwise be more of an evolution, if it’s real — the Adreno 320 graphics and 1.5GHz clock speed allude to the Optimus G’s Snapdragon S4 Pro sticking around, and the biggest leap beyond the screen could be an upgrade to Jelly Bean (4.1, not 4.2). While benchmarks aren’t entirely trustworthy without a tangible device to match, there’s enough here to imply that HTC will have at least one major competitor in a very young category.

NTT DoCoMo readies first dual-mode HSDPA, LTE femtocell for December

NTT DoCoMo readies first dualmode 3G and LTE femtocell for December

LTE’s frequent gotcha has been indoor coverage: as it often relies on high frequency ranges outside of the US, the signal can drop off quickly at home or in the mall. There have been LTE femtocells before to fill in the gaps, but NTT DoCoMo claims to have the first mini cell site that would cover our needs much more thoroughly. The Japanese carrier’s new base station run simultaneous 112.Mbps LTE and 14.4Mbps HSDPA (sorry, no HSUPA upload speeds) on the 2GHz band to keep 3G data and voice working side-by-side with 4G, piping both through a wired broadband connection; there’s no need to sacrifice the basics or legacy support just for a better LTE signal. NTT DoCoMo plans to sell the dual-mode femtocell to local homeowners, offices and stores in December. Sadly, there’s no immediate word of plans for femtocells that support networks abroad, although the technology’s existence gives us hope that we’ll see it spread to other providers — and that black holes in cellular coverage will be distant memories.
