AT&T announces new flat rate global talk and text plans, offers options for weary travelers

DNP AT&T's new global talk and text plans look to

A few months back AT&T made some changes to its international data plans and today old Ma Bell is at it again. The carrier’s new text and call packages will take effect on November 16th and will offer flat rate pricing to globetrotters who often find themselves abroad. AT&T’s Europe Travel plan offers minutes in increments of 30, 80 and 200 respectively priced at $30, $60 and $120 per month, with an overage rate of $1 per minute. For customers traveling elsewhere, the company’s new Rest of World Travel setup features buckets of 15, 40 and 100 minutes of talk time also priced at $30, $60 and $120 a month, with an overage charge of $2 per additional minute. As for those who’d rather text than talk, AT&T’s newest Global Messaging plan serves up 600 text, video and picture messages for $60 per month in over 120 countries. Finally, customers who have 300MB or 800MB international data add-ons will be able to use AT&T’s WiFi International app to access up to 1GB of free WiFi data each month. Now take a breath and let all of that info marinate. Got it? Good. So, if you’re a frequent flyer trying to save some won, euros or rupees, or whatever — then be sure to check out the press release for a complete list of countries covered under these new plans.

Vodafone Red Hot rents you a phone, offers upgrades every 12 months

Vodafone Red Hot rents you a phone, offers upgrades every 12 months

While American carriers are lengthening upgrade cycles and pushing people off unlimited data plans if they want a subsidized device, companies across the pond are actually looking to get customers to trade up more often. Vodafone’s Red Hot isn’t quite as flighty as JUMP, but the basic premise is the same. Rather than buy the latest high-end smartphone, you rent it. Then when the time comes, you simply trade it in for the new latest and greatest. While Phones4u lets you switch handsets impulsively every six months, Vodafone goes with a more reasonable yearly upgrade cycle. With the Red Hot plan Vodafone customers get a new smartphone, unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and “loads of internet,” though we’d argue 2GB hardly qualifies as “loads.” Pricing will vary based on handset, but we can tell you a Galaxy S III will currently set you back £47 a month. If you’ve still got some lingering questions hit up the source links.

Sprint’s leaked Black Friday ad touts free Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Victory after $50 mail-in rebate

DNP Sprint Black Friday ad outs free Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Victory

Thanksgiving is a week away and as exciting as family and good eats may be, there’s nothing more appetizing than a good deal. Not too long ago we took a quick peek at Sprint’s Black Friday offerings and now it’s time to wrap things up. An anonymous source has served up the carrier’s remaining post-Turkey Day sales and it appears that the Now Network is having a Samsung blowout. Running November 23rd through 25th, Sprint will be offering the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Victory to new and eligible customers for free after a $50 mail-in rebate and two year service agreement. In typical holiday sale fashion, supplies are expected to be limited, so you’ll want to plan accordingly in order to cash in on this deal.

[Thanks, anonymous]

PSA: Verizon returns to Windows Phone today, HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 822 go on sale

Nokia Lumia 822 hands-on

In some senses, we’ve been waiting for this moment since last May: Verizon is back to selling brand-new Windows Phone hardware. Starting today, the carrier is offering both the $200 HTC Windows Phone 8X as its flagship and the $100 Nokia Lumia 822 for the more cost-conscious. Both Windows Phone 8 devices have a slight spin on the stock formula. Verizon’s 8X is currently the only variant of the phone that supports wireless charging, if you’re in the position of choosing between Big Red’s network and AT&T’s; the Lumia 822’s differences are more cosmetic, but they may appeal to those who aren’t fans of the boxier 810 and 820. The only immediate caveat is a very monochromatic selection that won’t improve until the blue and red 8X editions start shipping from next week onwards.

Cricket announces LTE-capable LG Optimus Regard, Galaxy S III coming later this month

Cricket's announces LTEcapable LG Optimus Regard, Galaxy S III coming later this month

CDMA-based Cricket has announced its first LTE smartphones, launching the Optimus Regard this week, while that rather popular Samsung Galaxy S III will shake hands with the carrier’s new 4G network on November 23rd. The Optimus Regard features a 1.2GHz processor, Android 4.0, 3.5-inch screen and 5-megapixel camera, with that humble spec sheet setting you back $250. Meanwhile, a few weeks later, Samsung’s flagship will land priced at $550 off-contract. Cricket is offering both devices on its new Double Data plan that offers (for now, at least) double the monthly data allowance of its 3G plans. The $50 plan nets your 2GB of data, while $60 gets 5GB and $70 will offer 10GB of data. If you’re mildly tempted by either the Galaxy S III or the humbler (cheaper) Optimus can read up on the full offering at the sources below.

PSA: Nexus 4 now available from T-Mobile for $200 on a two-year service agreement

PSA Nexus 4 now available from TMobile for $200 on a twoyear service agreement

Google Play opened the Nexus 4 floodgates yesterday, but today it’s T-Mobile’s turn. America’s fourth largest carrier is officially offering Google’s latest purebred smartphone for $200 on its Value and Classic plans with a two-year service agreement. If contracts aren’t really your thing and wasting money is, you can purchase the phone outright for $500, a $150 markup on Google’s asking price. As it stands the first LG-made Nexus handset will be available at select T-Mobile retail locations, so if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Of course, you could always order online directly from the carrier, but considering yesterday’s turn of events, we suggest that you move quickly.

Google+ auto-embeds Android app install links to spur curious downloaders

Google autoembeds Android app installs to encourage impulsive downloaders

Next to an in-person demo, social networking is arguably the most common way to learn about apps through unofficial sources. It’s only natural, then, that Google streamline the whole process of sharing Android apps in Google+. Include a link to a release in the Google Play Store with a Google+ post and the page now generates a clickable title card that installs the app right after choosing a target device. While the gesture doesn’t extend to +1 votes, it’s more than enough to give Android fans an easy and trustworthy way of spreading love for a favorite app. Or, at least, some shameless self-promotion.

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile USA receives its Jelly Bean update

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile

Sprint was the first major US carrier to start delivering Jelly Bean to Galaxy S III owners, but it no longer stands alone now that the T-Mobile edition is officially receiving its update. If you’re part of the initial crop deemed eligible on Magenta’s network, a check either over-the-air or through Kies should put Android 4.1.1 on the Samsung flagship. T-Mobile’s version of the upgrade delivers the expected dashes of Google Now and Project Butter as well provider-specific fixes for WiFi calling. Don’t worry if there isn’t an immediate notice, as carrier-linked OS updates usually take weeks to get everyone on the same page; the main question is when all the other big US networks will follow suit.

AT&T Pantech Magnus (P9090) reappears after fall vacation

AT&T Pantech Magnus P9090 reappears after summer break

A blast from the recent past, Pantech’s Magnus has leaked again — this time with the screen switched on. We’ve already gleaned that a 8-megapixel, quad-band LTE, MSM8960 dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and NFC are all part of the AT&T-bound package, while those onscreen buttons suggest Android 4.0 — at the least. While the Twitter-based evleaks decided to obscure the calendar widget (and the probable launch date), we doubt it’ll much longer before AT&T offers a full explanation.

BBM 7 beta is open now, adds Voice feature for free calls over WiFi

BBM 7 beta is open now, adds Voice feature for free calls over WiFi

RIM’s BlackBerry 10 launch isn’t scheduled until January 30th, but BBM faithful can try out a new feature on their existing handsets — voice calling. Brand new for BBM 7 it lets users bypass the text chat their thumbs have been used to and directly talk via the service, as long as they’re connected to a WiFi network, no 3G / 4G allowed. That connection restriction takes some of the shine off, but BlackBerry users traveling to / living in far locales with minute-restricted SIM cards or less reliable infrastructure make make the most use of it. Voice allows for direct initiation of calls, switching from text chat to a call, using both in split screen and has an indicator to let users know when their friends are open for a chat. That’s not the only BBM 7 upgrade however, as the service is now deeply integrated with one BlackBerry ID, which backs up their profile, groups and contacts for easy switching to a new device. Currently BBM 7 is available in beta for BlackBerry OS 6 or higher smartphones, with support for BlackBerry 5 planned “at a future date.” If you’re interested, hit the Beta Zone to sign up for access at the link below, or check out the press release after the break for more details.
