Tumblr for iOS goes native now with redesigned Dashboard, improved notifications and more

Just as Facebook did a while back, Tumblr, too, has decided to rebuild its iOS application from the ground up. Inside this new version (3.2), daily users of the blogging service will find a completely redesigned Dashboard, which displays larger pictures and offers faster overall speeds when loading posts. In addition, Tumblr’s also added “spiffy” notification previews to its iOS application, allowing folks to see when other users reply, like or reblog their posts — oh, and better yet, GIFs now automatically play on the all-new Dashboard. The new Tumblr app’s now live on Cupertino’s App Store — all you have to do is either hit the source link below or snag it directly via your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

That's an affirmative on BlackBerry 10 security certification, sir

RIM may be falling out of favor with certain government departments, but it’s not removing the earpiece or pocketing the shades just yet. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has granted the BlackBerry 10 platform FIPS 140-2 certification, which basically means data security and encryption are top notch throughout. All you need to know is government agencies, and others with confidential info, can brandish BB10 handsets without worry when they launch early next year. Another piece of good news for Obama — we’re pretty sure he’s due for an upgrade about now.

Meridian launches indoor GPS SDK, Macy’s first to launch with it embedded

Meridian’s indoor GPS technology has been the sole preserve of companies prepared to build their apps from inside Meridian’s custom editor. Now, however, it’s opened up the platform, introducing a pair of SDKs that let use anyone use its coveted Nav Kit and Blue Dot know-how to help people get around cavernous public spaces. Tested in locations like Miami Children’s Hospital, Sydney Airport and Macy’s, users will be able to get turn-by-turn directions to help them find their gate, offspring or this season’s must-have look — with the latter the first to launch a mobile app built with the technology.

Google Shopper adds push notifications, new UI and more with 3.0 update

Google Shopper has just gotten the bump to version 3.0 with an update that brings a roster of fresh features, including a new UI with speedier navigation and larger images. In addition to the fresh coat of paint, the app sports a brand-new sales screen, image-focused search results and product ratings provided by GoodGuide. Page and Co. have also thrown in push notifications to keep users abreast of new features and content, and an area to showcase retail promotions. Itching to start penny pinching? HTC Windows Phone 8S hits the FCC with North American 3G, gives the US a horrible tease

HTC Windows Phone 8S reaches the FCC with tease of what could have been

Unlike Nokia, all of HTC’s Windows Phone effort in the US this fall has been centered on the high-end, through the Windows Phone 8X. That makes the FCC appearance of its budget cousin, the 8S, borderline cruel for American fans of HTC’s hyper-colorized design. The phone getting clearance has support for both AT&T and T-Mobile HSPA bands without the LTE that either American carrier would want. Given that the 8S is officially destined for Canada (and not the US) without a named carrier, we’re most likely looking at an example for a budget Canuck provider such as Mobilicity or Wind. At least the frequencies will be a comfort to gray market US importers who want HTC’s Windows Phone aesthetic on the cheap.

Sony rolls out update to Xperia T and TX for Miracast mirroring, extra-long standby

Sony Xperia T and TX owners won’t have to wait until the eventual Jelly Bean update to eke some new life out of their software. From this week onwards, the Bond-blessed Android phone is getting an update that adds screen mirroring through Miracast; provided the stars align and you’ve got a compatible TV, the high-end Xperia gets that much larger a canvas. Upgrading also introduces an extended standby mode that temporarily shuts off data, a movie app with a small video player and a photo album that makes use of Sony’s full image processing engine. We’re further reminded as to how much sweeter that HD Voice calling on the T (but not TX) should sound. As much as we’d prefer a full-fledged OS update, it’s a welcome dose of relevancy for a smartphone that has had fierce competition almost from the start.

Rhapsody announces redesigned Android app, adds new Replay feature

Only a few weeks have gone by since Rhapsody updated its Android app to v3.0, but today the self-titled number one music subscription service has announced an all-new version of its tune-streaming application. For starters, the most notable change here is a completely redesigned user interface that, according to Rhapsody, “brings music discovery to life.” That’s not it, however, as the Android app also sees the addition of a new feature dubbed Replay which will recommend tunes based on previous activity, plus a Featured Albums section tailored specifically by Rhapsody’s “world class editorial staff.” The overhauled app’s available for download now from Google Play — and, yes, there’s a free trial option for those who have yet to shell out cash on the paid subscription offering.

AT&T selling Nokia’s Lumia 920 for $450 off-contract

It’s an understatement to say that the Lumia 920 is priced “to sell,” and that doesn’t just mean with AT&T’s carrier subsidy. If you’d prefer to own your smartphone outright, you can snag the handset for $449.99 — $100 less the Galaxy S III and $200 less than the iPhone 5. There’s no word on when these pre-orders will begin to ship, but if you’re that commitment-phobic, you’re not gonna hold other people to deadlines, are you?

Samsung ATIV Odyssey for Verizon possibly spotted at the FCC

When Microsoft teased that Verizon would carry the Samsung ATIV Odyssey, it left just about everything to the imagination — we didn’t even see a real image. A new FCC filing may have given us a better (if all too incomplete) look. The device getting approval at the US agency doesn’t have any dead giveaways in its hardware beyond a vaguely ATIV S-like shape and Verizon’s needed CDMA and LTE frequencies, but it’s going under an SCH-i930 model name that hints at possible Windows Phone 8-based origins: the SCH-i920 was the CDMA edition of the Omnia II, one of the last times Microsoft, Samsung and Verizon hung out together. If the i930 is what we suspect, the FCC will have just removed a key obstacle to the ATIV Odyssey’s promised December launch.
