LG Enact launches on Verizon, keeps the flame alive for QWERTY slider phones

LG Enact launches on Verizon, keeps the QWERTY slider flame alive

Verizon isn’t just releasing its variant of the HTC One today — it also has a treat for fans of the oft-neglected QWERTY slider smartphone. The carrier has just launched the once-rumored LG Enact, which hides a landscape keyboard underneath its 4-inch WVGA screen. As you might gather from the display, though, this device is no flagship. The combination of a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front camera and 8GB of expandable storage puts the Enact at the low end. What’s more, it’s also stuck on Android 4.1. When LG’s new device costs $20 on contract, however, it’s inexpensive enough that many fans of hardware keys can afford to take a look.

Oppo teases N1 smartphone launch in September, promises backside touch

Oppo teases N1 smartphone with September launch, backside touch

Oppo may have already confirmed the existence of its N-Lens series devices, but it’s offering us a few more details through official teasers for the line’s inaugural smartphone, the N1. While the posts show little of the handset in question, they point to both a September launch and backside touch input. It’s also clear that the N1 is important to Oppo — a timeline (pictured after the break) positions the phone as a spiritual successor to last year’s Find 5 flagship. With the unveiling just weeks away, we won’t have to wait long to get the full story.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra appears on the FCC with North American-friendly LTE

DNP Sony Xperia Z Ultra appears on the FCC bearing AT&Tcompatible LTE

When we reviewed the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, it was with the C6802, a HSPA+ model devoid of LTE bands. However, it seems that a speedy 4G version of the handset will arrive stateside soon, if this recent FCC listing is any indication. The document shows what is clearly the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, but with HSPA+ and LTE bands that are more compatible with T-Mobile, AT&T or any of the carriers in the Great White North. This means it’s likely the C6806, the handset’s North American cousin, all set up to take advantage of the super-fast network on this side of the pond. It doesn’t look like there’s too much else differentiating it from the international model however, so we’d take a gander at the review one more time to decide if it belongs on our wish list.

Update: We’ve updated the post to reflect the possibility that this phone is headed to networks other than AT&T.

Kogan Mobile to wind down after wholesale provider ispONE goes bust

Telstra wholesaler ispONE enters administration, leaves Kogan Mobile in limbo

Virtual carriers are only as healthy as the companies that provide their services — and Australia’s Kogan Mobile is learning this the hard way. Its wholesale cellular partner ispONE has just entered administration following a contract dispute with Telstra, ending all its deals for prepaid 3G services and leaving Kogan Mobile no choice but to wind down. Customers have already lost the ability to add or replenish services; they’ll have up to 60 days after a Telstra notice to use any credit they have left, and 180 days to port their numbers elsewhere. While Kogan’s shutdown may only affect about 100,000 people, it still represents an unfortunate loss of competition in a country with few major providers.

Galaxy Mega 6.3 press render surfaces with navy blue body, AT&T branding

Galaxy Mega 63 press render surfaces with navy blue body, AT&T branding

Courtesy of the ever-reliable @evleaks, it appears the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is indeed coming to AT&T. A purported press render shows the device colored in a navy blue plaid with the carrier’s globe logo below the rear-facing camera. Of the few versions that passed through the FCC, you may recall that this one (SGH-I527 Melius) features Ma Bell-compatible LTE connectivity. There are currently no other details aside from all that, but it seems this behemoth of smartphone should hit the States soon.

Fresh Paint updated to support lower-tier Windows Phone 8 devices

If you’re one of many Windows Phone 8 users who downloaded the Fresh Paint app when it arrived on mobile devices a few weeks ago, you might’ve been disappointed to find it wouldn’t run on certain devices. That’s because the initial release of the program was only for higher-end WP8 phones with a healthy dosage of RAM. Now, however, it has been updated to run on Windows Phone 8 handsets with just 512MB of RAM, which includes models like the HTC 8S, the Nokia Lumia 520/521, 620, 625 and 720. So if you now have a qualifying handset, feel free to hit up the Windows Phone Store link below to unleash that pent-up creativity on a digital canvas.

LG G2 coming to six major Canadian carriers this fall

LG G2 hands-on

LG was unsurprisingly silent regarding a Canadian launch for the G2 at its New York City event, but it’s making up for that today with initial release details for the country. As in the US, LG plans to support most larger carriers: its 5.2-inch phone will be available this fall through Bell, Rogers, SaskTel, Telus, Videotron and Wind Mobile. There are no mentions of pricing at this stage, although the Canadian G2 will share the American variant’s 3,000mAh battery and 32GB of storage. It will at least offer more variety in the local smartphone selection — when the G2 ships, many Canucks will see at least two Android flagships on their network of choice.

Nokia Lumia 625 reaches the UK on August 28th with LTE on three networks

Nokia Lumia 625 arrives in the UK on August 28th

Brits who’ve wanted Nokia’s budget phone ambitions writ large — namely, the Lumia 625 — won’t have to wait much longer. The 4.7-inch Windows Phone will be available on August 28th through EE, O2, Vodafone, Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U. If you’re interested, you can pick up the device for free on a £21 per month contract, or buy it outright for £179 on pay-as-you-go service; early adopters get a second colored back as a bonus. EE, O2 and Vodafone should all support the Lumia 625’s LTE either immediately or the day after, so it’s just a matter of choosing the 4G network you prefer.

Sprint releases purple Galaxy S 4, gives Prince a new ‘life companion’

Sprint releases purple Galaxy S 4, gives Prince a new 'life companion'

Sprint’s eggplant-colored Galaxy S III must have proven a hit, as the carrier is already following up with a version of the Galaxy S 4 in Purple Mirage. Like its ancestor, the purple GS4 is strictly a palette swap; the $200 you pay on contract still gets you a 16GB version of Samsung’s familiar 2013 flagship, just in a more vibrant shade. If you’re tired of conservative smartphone colors, though, you could do far worse than to buy Sprint’s latest royal-hued smartphone… especially if you’re a platinum-selling rocker from Minnesota.
