Windows Phone App Studio makes it easy to build WP8 apps

Windows Phone App Studio makes it easy to build WP8 apps

Say what you will about Microsoft’s ecosystem struggles, but no one can fault it for trying. In an effort to get more developers to give Windows Phone 8 more than a passing glance, the outfit has just launched a beta version of Windows Phone App Studio — a web-based dev environment that’s “designed to help anyone quickly bring an idea to life by applying text, web content, imagery, and design concepts to any one of a rich set of customizable templates.” Moreover, Microsoft is now allowing any dev to unlock and register a single phone to use with up to two apps, and it’s also offering a $19 “Summer Break” Dev Center registration offer for those looking to actually publish software to the store. Finally, a new “Click To Chat” support program is being instituted to help those who can’t quite seem to overcome a programming hurdle. Take a look at the company’s blog post for the full skinny.

Nokia intros App Social Beta for Windows Phone with crowdsourced app suggestions

Nokia intros App Social Beta for Windows Phone, sources app selections from your friends

Nokia may see a surge of Windows Phone apps on the horizon, but it’s not waiting for that deluge before it offers further app advice to new Lumia owners. Its new App Social Beta improves on App Highlights by crowdsourcing suggestions. Users create and follow app lists whose popularity determines which titles rise to the top; there’s also a news feed for those who only want to see recommendations from friends and favorite curators. There’s no guarantee that Nokia will help you find that perfect Instagram substitute, but App Social Beta’s immediate availability in 14 countries may keep the search time to a minimum.

Google patent launches specific apps through pattern unlock

Google patent launches specific apps through pattern unlock

When you set up your Android phone with a secure unlock mode, it often means giving up app shortcuts. You won’t have to make that sacrifice if Google implements a newly granted US patent, however. The technique lets device owners complement a basic pattern unlock with multiple customizable patterns that launch specific apps, such as the camera or dialer. It’s a simple concept. The question is whether or not Google will ever use it — when Android 4.3 still relies on a conventional pattern unlock, it’s clear that the company isn’t in a big rush.

LinkedIn lands on Nokia Asha touch phones, lets S40 users network like a boss

LinkedIn lands on Nokia Asha touch phones, lets S40 users network like a boss

Considering how popular Nokia’s Series 40 handsets are worldwide, it should come as no surprise that the platform is finally getting a dedicated LinkedIn client. The app, which is available on the Nokia Store for free, is designed specifically for Series 40 touch phones like the sexy new Asha 501 (it also supports the Asha 305, 306, 308, 309, 310 and 311). Existing users can update their LinkedIn stream, manage their inbox, search their network and check their profile, while new users can sign up right from the login screen. LinkedIn for Series 40 comes hot on the heels of last month’s Foursquare client and joins the existing Symbian and Windows Phone apps. Check the source links below for more info.

Bing for Windows Phone 8 update brings simpler views, richer at-a-glance results

Bing for Windows Phone 8 updated with simpler views, more ataglance info

Microsoft has spent the past several months refining Bing results on the web and the desktop. Now, it’s Windows Phone 8’s turn. An upcoming Bing refresh for the platform will reduce the search filters to three — Web, Images and Videos — while providing more relevant information on the first result screen. The tool is also more likely to show usable results in the first place, with immediate answers available for subjects like flight schedules, movies and word definitions. Photo hunters get some additional love between infinite scrolling and auto-sized thumbnails. Just don’t expect the new Bing features right away. Microsoft is delivering the update to American devices over the course of the next few weeks, with international users to follow afterward.

Unofficial Amber ROMs emerge for Nokia Lumia 820 and 920

Nokia Lumia 920 and companions

If you’re a Nokia Lumia 820 or 920 owner, you now have a chance to try the Amber update a little early. WindowsMania.pl has posted unofficial ROMs (820, 920) that upgrade international versions of the Windows Phones to the Amber release ahead of Microsoft’s rollout. Both ROMs are relatively easy to install from a PC using NokiaViews.com‘s instructions, although they’re risky: they require wiping the phone’s data, and there’s no guarantees of future official upgrades. Even so, the new code may be worthwhile for Lumia fans who’d rather not wait a few weeks for a minor OS refresh.

NetZero strikes deals to use Sprint LTE and Verizon 3G

NetZero strikes deals to use Sprint LTE and Verizon 3G

We like the idea of NetZero’s budget-friendly mobile broadband — just not its use of Clearwire’s small, aging WiMAX network. The provider should soon take care of that problem through new MVNO agreements with Sprint and Verizon. The five-year Sprint pact gives NetZero both LTE and EV-DO; the Verizon deal serves more as a safety net, supplying EV-DO alone for three years. Both agreements only take effect in the second quarter of 2014, but they should finally give the NetZero broad coverage and higher peak speeds that it needs to compete with more expensive rivals.

BlackBerry 10.2 resources suggest A10 smartphone may ship as the Z30

BlackBerry code suggests Aristo may be named Z30

Many rumors surrounding BlackBerry’s first big smartphone, the Aristo, have only made references to an A10 model number. However, we’re now learning that even the A10 badge may just be a codename. CrackBerry forum member ofutur has found references in pre-release BlackBerry 10.2 code that relabel the phone as the Z30, and CrackBerry editor Bla1ze has uncovered associated tutorial resources that tie images of the device back to the Z30. There’s no guarantee that this is the final name, but it’s consistent with BlackBerry’s use of letters to signify form factors — the touch-only Z30 could complement the Z10 while leaving room for in-between devices. Let’s hope that the company doesn’t leave us waiting long for an official answer.

Nokia intros Photo Transfer for Mac to back up shots from special image modes

Nokia intros Photo Transfer for Mac with support for special photo modes

It’s easy for Mac users to back up regular photos from Lumia phones, but not the shots taken using Nokia’s special modes — iPhoto can’t handle the raw data from Cinemagraph, for example. Nokia’s new Photo Transfer for Mac should provide that missing peace of mind. The utility saves all the files needed to work with photos and videos in Nokia’s mobile imaging apps, including Cinemagraph, Pro Camera, Smart Camera and SmartShoot. While there’s no on-computer editing, the tool simplifies exporting any media to a Lumia device for additional tweaks. If you’re running at least OS X Lion, you can grab Photo Transfer for Mac at the source link.

T-Mobile says its Moto X variant will only sell through Motorola at first

TMobile says its Moto X variant will only sell through Motorola at first

While it’s well-known that the Moto X will launch on multiple US carriers, it turns out that T-Mobile customers won’t have the easiest time buying one — at least, not at first. The provider’s Mike Sievert has confirmed to AllThingsD that the T-Mobile Moto X variant will only be available through Motorola itself in the short term. He hints that the network could offer the Android flagship in its stores, but any announcements would come later. Pricing also remains a mystery; it’s not clear if Motorola will offer UnCarrier-style down payments instead of asking shoppers to pay in full. Either way, T-Mobile fans who crave a Moto X should be prepared to jump through some hoops.
