HTC Proto goes under spycam, reveals secret identity: the Desire X

HTC Desire X

It seems the newest member of HTC’s mid-range smartphone line-up — previously known as the Proto — is actually the Desire X, according to several Scandinavian retailers (see coverage). Also, Hong Kong blog ePrice, who gave the new model the blurrycam treatment, claims that the specs line up with all the rumors: a 4-inch, 800 x 480 display, Android 4.0 with Sense 4.0, Beats Audio, dual-core 1GHz processor and 5-megapixel camera. HTC should formally out the phone this week at IFA, but its European presence and similarity to the China-only New Desire V means it’s likely an international version — without the continental sticker shock.

India planning fresh 2G spectrum auctions for November 12th

India planning fresh 2G spectrum auctions for November 12th

India’s Department of Telecommunications has issued guidelines for the forthcoming 2G spectrum auction, penciled in for November 12th. While the subcontinent has already flogged off its 3G bands, it withdrew 122 licenses in the 1,800MHz and 800Mhz waves due to allegations of serious corruption. The country has set the starting price of $2.5 billion, a figure that the networks have balked at, saying that it’ll cause tariffs to increase — but is less than half of the $5.61 billion the country had originally sought to raise during the first, scandal-ridden auction.

T-Mobile memo asks staff to sell ‘against the iPhone’ on September 21st

TMobile memo asks staff to sell 'against the iPhone' on September 21st

T-Mobile has been virtually screaming for an iPhone deal, but a memo leaked to TmoNews suggests Apple isn’t prepared to listen just yet. The note tells carrier staff they’ll get training material to learn “selling against the iPhone” from September 21st onwards. Why does that date sound familiar? Although we don’t know if T-Mobile has an inside track on Apple’s plans or is just making assumptions based on rumors, that’s not the language we would associate with a carrier that has a new agreement to sell the iPhone — not unless it’s using a loose definition of the word “against,” at least. As a consolation, T-Mobile is reportedly supplying updated micro-SIM kits on August 29th to emphasize its improving support for unlocked iPhones on refarmed 3G spectrum. Nothing’s official until Apple struts on stage, of course; you may nonetheless want to research alternatives if getting a cheaper contract phone on Magenta trumps having Cupertino’s latest and greatest.

Jelly Bean hits original Motorola Droid for the same reason we climb Everest: because it’s there (video)

Jelly Bean comes to original Motorola Droid for the same reason we climb Everest because we can video

The first-run Motorola Droid has developed a reputation as the Phone That Would Not Die — while official upgrades stopped around Froyo, enthusiasts have been keeping the QWERTY slider alive ever since. Kfazz at the XDA-Developers forums has taken up the torch this time around with a port of Jelly Bean. Based on CyanogenMod 10, the build is surprisingly functional, if currently buggy. The only glaring holes are a sometimes-broken camera and the absence of Google Now. The main disincentives to waiting for a stable build are the slow performance and very limited remaining storage that result from trying to stuff a 2012 OS into a 2009-era smartphone: Kfazz can defy expectations, but he can’t defy reality. It’s thus more of a proof of concept, because-we-can port than a favor for holdouts keeping the Droid as their daily driver. If you want to keep a mobile ancestor feeling relevant for one more generation, however, the fountain of youth is waiting at the source link.

Samsung Stratosphere II flaunts its keyboard for Verizon, LG Spectrum 2 confirmed as VS930

Samsung Stratosphere II flaunts its keyboard for Verizon, LG Spectrum 2 confirmed as VS930

We’ve had a successor to the Stratosphere on our radar for a while now, but the expected refresh is now much more tangible, as the Samsung Stratosphere II has just been leaked as part of Verizon’s equipment guide. Other than its QWERTY keyboard, 4-inch Super AMOLED display and LTE connectivity, however, little is known about the Android smartphone. As one point of interest, recent FCC certifications suggest that it’ll support global roaming.

Also revealed in the same equipment guide is the LG Spectrum 2, a localized version of the Optimus LTE II, which you’ve previously known as the VS930. The prevailing wisdom suggests it’ll combine a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 with a 4.7-inch True HD IPS 720p display and Android 4.0.4. Like the Stratosphere II, the refreshed Spectrum is said to support global roaming — just one more reason to take that dream vacation.

Lenovo’s K860 phablet gets priced in China: 2,188 yuan on August 28th

Lenovo's K860 phablet gets priced in China 2,188 yuan on August 28th

Lenovo’s K860 has been making the rounds for a while now. That five-incher’s specs are hardly a secret. But, what has continued to evade us was a price and release date for this quad-core Exynos-powered beast. Thankfully, the Chinese manufacturer has finally come clean and we are happy to tell you the phablet will be hitting shelves tomorrow, August 28th, for 2,188 yuan (about $344). The initial run of this heavily skinned ICS handset will be fairly limited unfortunately — only 2,000 will be released on the first day. But, we’re sure a wider release can’t be far behind.

LG Intuition spied in press shots, leaves one piece of the puzzle left to go

LG Intuition spied in press shots, leaves just one piece of the puzzle left

The LG Intuition may be one of Verizon’s more poorly-kept secrets of recent memory. Apart from LG itself having confirmed that an Optimus Vu rebranding is due for the US within weeks, there’s been pricing and even an uncannily detailed FCC filing to fill in the gaps. Why not throw official press images into the mix? From the renders DroidDog has managed to obtain, the Intuition is a bit more than just a one-for-one port of the original Korean phablet. While Verizon’s influence is light outside of that attention-grabbing logo, there’s a switch-up in the navigation keys to reflect that Android 4.0 will be there from the beginning — a nice break from the ancient-feeling Android 2.3 layout of the original. About the only question left at this stage is that of the exact release date. There’s a September 15th mention in one of the images, but we all know how dates in press imagery can be misleading.

LG teases that Optimus G will have 768p gapless display, long-lifespan battery

LG hints Optimus G will have 768p gapless display, longlifespan battery

LG must know that word of the Optimus G has been spoiled, even if it’s not quite ready to put all its cards on the table. While it’s only acknowledging the phone’s identity under a ‘G’ codename, the Korean electronics giant is willing to talk a lot about what’s under the hood. Among the truly new revelations: that uncommonly wide 1,280 x 768 screen, now called the G2 Touch Hybrid Display, is a 30 percent thinner gapless panel that puts the LCD right near the glass in a way that just might be familiar to HTC One X owners. We don’t know for certain if it’s one of those newly-shipping in-cell touch panels, but that name certainly suggests LG is setting aside a few of those cutting-edge LCDs for itself. There’s also a treat in store for those who work their phones to the bone — a newly refined battery can go through 800 full recharge cycles before it gives up the ghost, or about 60 percent more than we’ve seen in the past. Combine these with the quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro we already knew was coming, and the Optimus G could be quite the technology showcase for both LG’s native South Korea as well as the US through a possible Sprint model.

LG’s Optimus G caught on camera, flexes quad-core muscles

LG's Optimus G 'superphone' apparently caught on camera,

So, it seems that all those airborne clues about LG’s new superphone are slowly coalescing into something more concrete. In fact, according to the folk at AndroidMx, so concrete they’ve actually had a go with one. Most of the specification they report chimes with what we’d already heard. The 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4, the 2GB of RAM, the 4.7-inch IPS display, Android 4.0.4 and 13-megapixel camera, all present and correct. The screen resolution actually claims to be 1,280 x 768 if the grabs are to be believed, but AndroidMx does remind us that this is all pre-production hardware, so final details might change. This makes sense, especially given the video tease we saw yesterday, which hinted at a slightly more rounded design. Hopes are, that we’ll be put out of our misery come IFA, but with other potentially big announcements also in the pipeline, it’s going to be a busy week in mobile-land.
