The ability to charge a phone wirelessly is currently a luxury in the smartphone market. It is only available as an aftermarket modification by using a wireless charger pad and case. Tanveer, a doctor by day and a modder at night, has developed a process to eliminate the need of a case when wirelessly charging an iPhone 4s.

If you’ve ever slapped a CyanogenMod ROM on your Android phone instead of waiting months or longer for an official update, you may have wondered who was behind it and how they did it. Well, CM founder Steve Kondik spilled the beans to developers at Google’s I/O conference, and the first half of that presentation is now up on YouTube. It not only provides the modders’ MO, but also reveals a few things about the green robot itself. Are you looking for something different in a mirror? Something that you can hang on your wall that captures all of your nerdiness and still allows you to see yourself? Just convert your old laptop into a mirror and slap it on your wall.
That’s what Brian J. Noggle did. Now he can pretend that he’s video chatting with himself all day long, even though all the other guy does is mock him by mimicking everything he does.
Brian says, “I am the only person in the entire planet who owns a mirror that says PROPERTY OF ENVISION on the back.” Yep. I’m gonna assume that’s true. All he had to do was gut an old laptop computer and add a mirror to make this nerdiest of wall mirrors. You could always go with a model that has a webcam built in and go the digital route too.

Back before Apple announced the original iPad, the Modbook team set out to take existing MacBook Pros and turn them into standalone tablets. The idea was to take the internals and add a touchscreen into the mix, giving you a powerful yet relatively portable tablet running full blown OS X. Now the company is back, and has today announced the Modbook Pro, taking the current-generation 13-inch MacBook Pro and runs with the tablet conversion.
All the specs are what you would find on the current 13-inch MacBook Pro: Intel’s Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor clocked at 2.5Ghz, integrated HD 4000 GPU, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of hard drive space (plus a 960GB SSD option), SuperDrive, and WiFi b/g/n plus Bluetooth. The team has added is a Wacom digitizer to the 1280×800 display, with 512 levels of pressure sensitivity for the included stylus, with the screen also capable of registering 133 points per second.
Lots of attention has been paid to the housing of the Modbook Pro too. The tablet comes with a sloped edge design, and special grippy feet ensures the Modbook can be propped at a 50 degree angle without slipping. The usual array of ports are still onboard too, including Thunderbolt, USB 3.0, SDXC slot, and the MagSafe connector.
How much is all this going to set you back? Good question. The team hasn’t announced official pricing for the tablet yet, saying that it’s coming in the next few weeks with the tablet set to ship in the Fall. We doubt it will be cheap though, so if this strange hybrid has piqued your curiosity, you better start saving up those pennies.

You’d be forgiven for assuming that the ModBook dream died with release of the first iPad. After all, the first version of the hacked notebook predated Apple’s announcement by a couple of years. When the iPad finally hit in 2010, it did a lot to address the desire for a slate device running Apple software. Since then, things have largely remained silent on the Axiotron front. In fact, the last time we heard a significant peep out of the company was back in 2009. Its former CEO Andreas Haas assured us, however, that the real reason for the company’s silence is a bit more complicated than the story of yet another product falling victim to the Apple steamroller.
“Axiotron itself was a great company,” says Haas. “Back in 2008, I took the company public, everything was really great. There was one little thing that turned out to be a huge problem, which is that the company was largely bank-financed and 10 days after it went public, Lehman Brothers went belly-up and put the whole financial market in a tailspin. After that was mostly spent on trying to somehow restructure the company, and ultimately there was just nothing that could be done about it.”
As the newly reborn Modbook Inc. teased via its Facebook page yesterday, however, the name lives on. This week marks the return of the tablet in the form of the 13.3-inch Modbook Pro, a device slated to ship early this fall. Can such a device survive in a world that’s been downright flooded by tablets in the years since its predecessor’s release? The company clearly feels it can — that its new product is unique enough to set itself apart in amongst the deluge of slates, calling the new Pro, “the world’s most powerful and largest-screen tablet computer.” And in a space where hardware and software are relatively neutered, it’s understandable how the company might be inclined to make such bold claims about the converted notebook.

Desk case PC mods have lit up our radar before, but a modder by the name of Pirate — who’s no stranger to us — has dropped the typical glass and metal enclosure for medium-density fiberboard. Though the material choice was an effort to avoid buying a new desk, it created a need for a robust cooling system. Five fans (three exhaust, two intake), a radiator and a liquid-cooling system keep the rig at roughly 88 F (31 C) with ambient temperatures hovering around 79 F (26 C). As for horsepower, the workstation features a Core-i5-2000k processor and a Radeon HD 7950 graphics card sporting a water cooling block on an Asus Gene IV microATX motherboard. Visuals are piped to three displays in an Eyefinity configuration that are held by a modded ergonomic stand. Pictures of the build process in excruciating detail await you at the source.
