Legend of Zelda hack makes Link the damsel in distress

Inspired by the father who modded Donkey Kong so his daughter could play the Princess, another person had the idea of modifying another classic Nintendo game. Kenna W has always loved The Legend of Zelda series, and she always wanted to play the game as Princess Zelda instead of the male protagonist, Link. She wished that she had someone who could do for her what that man did for his daughter. She then realized, “I’m an adult now. If he could work it out, I could too.”

Legend of Zelda hack makes Link the damsel in distress

She worked tirelessly for 3 days to transform the classic Legend of Zelda. She had help from her boyfriend, a professional video game programmer, who told her that there was a ROM editor that could help simplify the process. They discovered tools around the internet that helped them modify the game, and what they realized was that you don’t necessarily need to be a programmer to modify these games (so if you want to modify Final Fantasy, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, start digging).

By using Tile Layer Pro, she and her boyfriend were able to find Zelda’s sprites and edit them. Her boyfriend also found a code file that let Kenna change the colors of Zelda’s clothing. After modifying the ROM to have Zelda replace Link in-game, Kenna also modified the opening text to change Link’s story into Zelda’s. She also debated making Link a “prince” or a “knight”, but in the end she decided to leave him as just good ol’ Link.

The mod took Kenna and her boyfriend a lot of work to accomplish, and she credits her success to all of the various, already-available modding tools, as well as this Legend of Zelda:ROM Map, and the Computer Archeology. Kenna made the patch available to the public via her Google Drive (available through the link below). You have to find the unedited Legend of Zelda NES ROM yourself however. With Donkey Kong and Legend of Zelda hacked, I wonder which game is coming next.

Black Label Neo Geo custom wood mod ups the ante on collector excess

Black Label Neo Geo custom wood mod ups the ante on collector excess

If you want to relive the glory of owning one of the rarest and most expensive (for its time) consoles in gaming history, you can do that for $130 with the Neo Geo X. Or… or you can recapture that magic and rebuild the system using “one of the rarest and most expensive woods in the entire world.” That wood would be Cocobolo and, no, we’re not making that last bit up. Analogue Interactive — the same company that brought you the Neo Geo CMVS Slim — is introducing a new service today for those (read: collectors) with money to burn, dubbed Black Label.

The service, designed to let consumers craft a new Neo Geo console using a selection of domestic and exotic woods, starts at $1,299 — that’s for a custom setup made with domestic wood. Should you have more champagne tastes, there’s a variety of exotic woods on offer, but be prepared to fork over up to an additional $585 for the “privilege.” Without a doubt, it’s the stuff of an über-collector’s wet dreams; the very same stuff that has us scratching our heads and railing against the excesses of the 1-percent. And just in case it was lost on you earlier: a portable and significantly cheaper Neo Geo alternative is readily available.

Dad creates Donkey Kong mod for his daughter where Mario needs saving

If you think about popular video games of today and vintage games of the past, the majority of them had male heroes. That can be a problem for girls who also like to play video games. One gamer dad created a very special Donkey Kong mod to make his little girl happy.

donkey-kong

As the story goes the mod maker, Mike Mika, has a little girl that particularly liked the fact that you could play as the Princess in Super Mario Bros 2. So, he took it upon himself to create a special mod of the classic game Donkey Kong where Mario needed to be saved and the hero is the Princess.

The modified ROM is apparently constructed from the version of Donkey Kong from 2010 for the Nintendo Wii game console. It reminds me a lot in looks of the vintage game from the 80s. Apparently, Mike used Tile Layer Pro, which is a popular ROM editing tool to put Mario on a pedestal while the Princess tries to save him.

I think this is great. My daughter would certainly agree that there aren’t enough video games with girls as the main character. Check out the video to see the mod in action.

TARDIS Soda Machine is Sweeter on the Inside

Looks like the TARDIS’ chameleon circuit is sort of working now. The TARDIS still looks like a phone box, but at least it was half-successful in trying to disguise itself as a soda vending machine.

This is actually the work of some pretty talented nerds who had both a love of soda and a love for Doctor Who – both of which can not be quenched. Epic Comics in Orlando, FL took their boring old soda machine and converted it into this awesome TARDIS.

I guess this means that there is a Doctor inside who feels like he is in a time loop from hell; damned to roam the endless halls of the TARDIS in search of cans of pop at every push of the buttons, before walking back to the door and dropping them in the slot for your enjoyment. Good work. Finally the Doctor has been outsmarted. Not to mention enslaved. You guys are evil! But I love it.

The Gameboo Game Boy Mod May Be The Ultimate Portable Gaming Device

We don’t know what’s up with you old-school gaming modders and your fascination with the Nintendo Game Boy as not too long ago, we saw the classic handheld combined with a Galaxy Nexus and Wii Remote innards. Now, another modder has used the Game Boy’s body to create quite the ultimate portable gaming device we’ve seen in a long time.

Dubbed “The Gameboo,” the modification completely replaces the innards of the Game Boy and replaces it with a Dingo Technologies A330. The Gameboo was painstakingly worked on for eight months, but the results, which you can see in the video embedded above, are amazing.

InWin flaunts open cases, lets your components flap in the wind

Worried that your PC case can’t stand up to a natural disaster, or doesn’t resemble a radiator enough? In-Win’s read your mind with a couple of open-plan models from CES 2013: the aluminum D-Frame (above left) looks ready for the Paris-Dakar rally and is “crush-proof and shock-proof,” while the H-Frame is basically case-shaped cooling fins, also in “exquisite satiny aluminum,” according to the charming company literature. The two models are geared to modders serious about standing out from the usual ragtag LED and pump crowd, with pricing to match: $399 for each. If you scrape for one, though, at least you know you’ll be unique — In-Win will only produce 500 copies of the D-Frame, and a mere 100 H-Frames.

Game Boy repurposed as an Android gamepad, adds retro flair to your mobile gaming

Game Boy repurposed as an Android gamepad, adds retro flair to your mobile gaming

Many of us whiled away untold hours of our youth mashing the D-pad, A and B buttons of the original Game Boy, which is why we’ve seen many hacks using its iconic hardware. Gaming on mobile touchscreens isn’t nearly so tactilely pleasing as that portable, however, so nostalgic modder Chad Boughton decided to swap out his GB’s dot-matrix display for the Super AMOLED of a Galaxy Nexus.

He first removed the screen and trimmed the chassis so that a GNex case could be bolted flush with the rest of the body. The more involved part of the mod, however, was getting the buttons to work wirelessly with the phone. To accomplish the trick, he trimmed the Game Boy’s circuit board to make room for the guts of a Wiimote, which he then connected to the buttons. From there, he installed the Wii Controller IME app to get the GB talking with the phone, and presto! One of the coolest Android gamepads we’ve seen was born. You can see how it works in the video after the break, and there’s a slew of shots showing the mod in progress at the source below.

Android Gamepad Fuses Gameboy Case With Wii Remote Innards

We’ve seen some impressive old-school video game controllers being used to play Android games, and today, we caught wind of another modification that uses the body of a Gameboy in order to play old-school games on a Galaxy Nexus.

Instructables user “alpinedelta” put together this mod as he wanted to play Nintendo emulators on his phone, but wasn’t a fan of the touch screen inputs. He didn’t just want to buy a commercial productthat would allow him to play games on his device, instead, he wanted to play his games on classic Nintendo hardware.

The modification combines the case of a Gameboy with the innards of a Wii remote to create a bluetooth controller that can be used on his Galaxy Nexus. The only issue he’s come across is the limit in the amount of buttons he can use to play games on any emulator that requires more than two buttons. So if you’re looking to play Street Fighter II or anything else that requires every button on its original controller, this mod probably isn’t the best idea for your gaming needs.

Ben Heck mods midi controller into guitar enclosure, scores pinball soundtrack in return

Love pinball? So does professional modder Ben Heck — he’s building a ghost hunt-themed pinball machine, and needs it to sound just right. Luckily, a local musician is happy to help, provided Heck can rejigger his midi controller into a guitar. Challenge accepted. With the help of his musician friend, Heck spends the first episode of a two-part Ben Heck Show disassembling the instrument, desoldering its components and reassembling them in the desired pattern — stitching together a few undersized circuit boards along the way. Ben lays out the key pattern too, which will dictate how large the axe’s case will need to be. It’s classic hardware modding, and a darn fine break to the deluge of CES news. Check out the first episode in the series after the break.

Nintendo 64 Stuffed in Game Boy Player, Makes GameCube Backwards Compatible

Console modder Jon Jandran aka Hailrazer is back with another Nintendo related project. Instead of working on portable versions of old game consoles, Hailrazer decided to combine two consoles – the Nintendo 64 and its successor, the GameCube – into one playable unit.

nintendo 64 gamecube mod by hailrazer

Hailrazer crammed the guts of an N64 into the case of a Game Boy Player – the GameCube add-on that allowed GB or GBA cartridges to be played on TV. Because of space constraints, Hailrazer had to fold the N64′s cartridge slot, making it unusable. He loads N64 games on his frankenconsole using an SD card system based on the Everdrive 64 flash cart.

Hey Hailrazer, can you make an Xbox 360 that can also play PS3 games (or vice versa)? Head to Hailrazer’s thread on Bacteria’s Forum for more info on the hack.
