Three 3rd-party modified MacBook Pro units were put up for sale this week in limited iterations including a customized top lid with Steve Jobs‘s own visage reflecting deeply in the Apple logo. The proceeds from each of these notebooks, each of them created by the Apple customizers at Uncover, will be sold for 9500,00 Euro, aka right around 12 thousand bucks here in the USA. This set of three units will be sold with all proceeds going to a couple of charities you’re just going to love.

The design of the Apple, for those of you that don’t remember all the way back to last year, comes from designer Jonathan Mak – or at least is based upon that design per their press release. This set of three notebooks is all the same, each model coming with 2.7GHz configurations, 16GB memory, and a 750GB solid state drive inside. Each model is made with essentially the same components as the normal MacBook Pro with Retina display, but the Apple logo on the top cover is laser-cut to create the face of Jobs.

The proceeds will be split between the charity Get It Done and another group by the name of SellanApp where it’ll be working with developers working on iOS apps that specifically “don’t have a direct business model, but have a clear societal value.” The bottom of the notebook will also include the following inscription laser-cut into the metal:

“When you grow up you, tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.” – Steve Jobs

This is just one of a vast collection of tributes that have been made to Jobs over the past year, with today’s one-year anniversary of his passing making the world once again remember his impact. Of course according to Apple, his influence doesn’t just stop at the idea that everything from his design knowledge to his leadership skills are still being studied today. His design influence in each of the major products in the field being released even today had Jobs hand in them well before they came to fruition.

No one ever said a modded MacBook Pro was gonna be cheap. Last week Modbook announced that it would be going ahead with pre-orders on the Modbook Pro today, but didn’t really touch on pricing. As ordering begins, the company’s attached a $3,500 starting price tag for the honor of controlling your 13.3-inch Mac with a pen. The Modbook Pro, which is set to start shipping in the middle of next month, runs Mountain Lion and features a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor (upgradable to a 2.9GHz i7) and memory and storage up to 16GB and 480GB, respectively. If you’re aching to get your hands on one of these Frankensteinian tablets, you’ll have to plunk down a $500 deposit.

If you need a new piece of steampunk weaponry, check this out. It’s an awesome streampunk Nerf crossbow made by Gabe Genway. The next time you organize a victorian big game hunt take note. If you make one half as good as Gabe, you will be the steampunk king.

Sadly, it has already been bought from Gabe’s Etsy store, but he has some other fine assorted steampunk pistols and grenades for gentlemen to lob at each other. Just like on this crossbow, the details are really nice on all of his pieces.

I know one thing for sure, if he ever offers up another crossbow like this one, it will be gone very quickly.

Remember the Mac Mini that was modded into an old Apple ][ Disk Drive a couple of years back? Well, the modder behind the build has now put it up for sale on eBay, to make room for other projects.

It only has a 1.5Ghz Core Solo CPU and 2GB of RAM, so it’s not the latest and greatest in Mac Mini tech, but on the other hand it’s way more powerful than the 1978 floppy drive upon which it is based. My favorite part of the mod has always been the slot-loading DVD drive that’s perfectly aligned with the old floppy disk slot.

Modder Charles Mangin has listed the 5-1/4″ floppy drive cum Mac Mini with a starting bid of $500(USD), but if you absolutely must have it, there’s a Buy-it-Now price of $1000.

The best part of the GTA games is the mayhem that you can cause as you drive and run and gun throughout the city. Some of the mods for the game are pretty cool too. You know what’s really awesome? A mod that lets you wreck havoc across the city as a giraffe.

There is nothing better than seeing a giraffe riding a motorbike, firing an RPG and pushing cars so they go flying like Superman sneezed. This Grand Theft Auto IV giraffe mod by indirivacua is some hardcore giraffe action for zoo fans everywhere.

Just make sure that you watch the video all the way through to the end, you’ll be happy you did. It is some funny stuff. To me at least. Who doesn’t love a giraffe on a rampage? But how about elephant?
