SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 5, 2012

We’re getting ready to wrap-up coverage for this Wednesday, and what a day we had. First up we had Nokia’s highly-anticipated Windows Phone 8 event, where it revealed both the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. There was a lot to take in during the event, and you can find everything you need to know in our Nokia wrap-up. It’s there that you can check out product announcements and hands-on posts with Nokia’s new devices, so be sure to give it a look.

After we had finished up with Nokia’s event, it was straight over to Gotham Hall, where Motorola and Google held an event of their own. Google’s Eric Schmidt took the stage first to boast the latest Android numbers, before Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside hopped up on stage to outline the company’s plan for the “The New Motorola.” After that, it was all about the reveals. Motorola revealed three new phones in total: the long-rumored DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR M, which has had its share of rumors as well, along with the surprise announcement of the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. If you were waiting for Motorola’s new devices, you’ll be pleased to know that we have a couple of hands-on posts that cover all three devices.

Woodside also said today that any Motorola phones from 2012 that don’t get updated to Jelly Bean by the end of the year will be a eligible for a $100 voucher, and it was announced that the developer editions of the DROID RAZR M and the RAZR HD will come with unlockable bootloaders. A little bit later on in the day, we found out that the PureView ad Nokia showed during its presentation may be a little bit misleading, and even though there was a ton of Nokia and Motorola news today, there was still time for a new iPhone leak, this time giving us an up-close look at the battery. Windows Phone 8 will be getting screenshot support, and today the EC approved a mobile wallet team up between three European carriers, much to Google’s chagrin.

Sony is putting its massive 84-inch 4K TV up for pre-order tomorrow, T-Mobile has rolled out unlimited 4G data across the country, and Getac has revealed its new Z710 Android tablet, which looks to be capable of taking a few hits. Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Note II have opened in the UK, where the new device has an expected mid-October ship date, and Ubisoft has announced that it will stop implementing always-on DRM in its PC games. Valve has been forced to impose a submission fee for those looking to list something on Steam Greenlight, Epson has unveiled a pair of home projectors, and finally tonight, NASA scientists today delayed the second engine firing of the Juno spacecraft, which will be headed for Jupiter before long.

That’s all for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Remember to check in with us tomorrow, as we’ll be at Amazon’s press event, where it’s expected to reveal a couple of new devices in the Kindle line!

Motorola DROID RAZR HD and M dev editions come with unlockable bootloaders

Lately we’ve been seeing Motorola slowly become more friendly toward those who want their Moto phone’s bootloader unlocked, and the company looks to be continuing that trend with the incoming DROID RAZR M and DROID RAZR HD. Announced today at Motorola’s press event in New York City, both of these new devices will be getting developer editions, and you can sign up to get one right now from Motorola’s website. The developer editions of these phones will come complete with an unlockable bootloader, letting you get in and have some fun tweaking the operating system if you’d like.

Some phones like the Google Nexus devices allow users to easily unlock the bootloader, but this is still a pretty new thing for Motorola. We’ve seen other companies like HTC and ASUS go this route, so it isn’t much of a surprise to see Motorola do the same. Naturally, unlocking the bootloader will void your warranty, but we’re thinking that developers won’t mind that little caveat as much as the typical consumer would.

If you’re a developer and are interested in taking an in-depth look at the Motorola DROID RAZR M, you can order the developer edition of the phone right now from Motorola’s website for $549.99. Developer editions of the RAZR M will begin shipping out next week, just in time for the phone’s launch at Verizon. With the RAZR HD it’s a different story at the moment, as the developer edition doesn’t have a price or a ship date yet. Motorola says that the RAZR HD will be landing at Verizon before the Sun sets on 2012, so we’re expecting to find out more about the developer edition soon.

It’s nice to see Motorola embracing the development crowd with unlockable bootloaders, and the feature will definitely be appreciated with the RAZR M and the RAZR HD. Does this mean that future Motorola smartphones will come with unlockable bootloaders? Possibly – it looked like Motorola was leaning in that direction even before the RAZR M and RAZR HD were announced, so we should see more Motorola phones offering unlockable bootloaders in the future. Stay tuned.

Motorola DROID RAZR HD and MAXX HD Hands-on

Earlier today Motorola took the stage and announced the next stage of their DROID lineup. That being primarily the Motorola DROID RAZR HD complete with a beautiful 4.7-inch HD display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and all day battery life. Then they surprised us all by announcing a RAZR MAXX HD too. The MAXX of course featuring a massive 3,300 mAh battery offering unparalleled battery life. Check out our hands-on pictures.

The details have finally been confirmed and basically revealing very little we didn’t already know. The all new Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD are in many many ways extremely similar to last years model, while getting a boost in a few much needed areas. You’ll get the same awesome hardware, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Kevlar coating all around — but this time the screen and processor received some much needed attention.

The new RAZRs will be the first smartphones to ship with Google’s own Chrome browser preinstalled, but the star of the show is that 4.7-inch HD display, 4G LTE from Verizon, and the Qualcomm 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor under the hood. For those wondering this is the same CPU powering the new Lumia 920, the Galaxy S III, and AT&T’s HTC One X. There’s not much to differentiate the performance here aside from Motorola’s own user interface changes. The RAZR HD and MAXX HD also come complete with 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 VGA front for video chat, and offer micro-SD support for expanded storage.

The difference here between the two is the RAZR HD finds a perfect middle ground offering a 2,530 mAh battery, while the awesome RAZR MAXX HD comes with a 3,300 mAh battery life that promises 21 hours of talk time, 13 hours of video playback or eight hours of web browsing. Pretty impressive right? So far the styling is extremely similar to what we’ve already seen from the RAZR. There’s nothing different here really worth noting. This time around the Kevlar coating on back wraps around the entirety of the device instead of just in the middle. Oh and they’ll be offering both White and Black models although pricing and release date wasn’t yet revealed.

So far our initial impressions are favorable with the build quality, but we knew that coming in. The hardware is similar but the new Kevlar does feel better in the hand. Then of course, the RAZR HD is extremely thin being just 8.4mm thick. The all new Motorola DROID RAZR HD and MAXX HD will be available later this year although exact details weren’t release. They will ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich although models we are enjoying hands-on with today have 4.1 Jelly Bean — so the update should arrive soon.

Thoughts?

Motorola ups the stakes, will offer $100 credit for users that don’t get Jelly Bean

Motorola hasn’t been known for being very timely when it comes to Android software updates for their smartphones. Between the countless times we’ve heard buyers upset, and the fact that Google has now taken over it appears that they’ll be turning the page on those complaints. Motorola has just announced that they’ll be offering timely updates to all devices announced today, and even talked cash.

While Motorola’s new CEO Dennis Woodside was wrapping up he made a huge statement on device updates. Claiming that the new Motorola will offer timely updates to “most” devices released in 2012 to Android 4.1. Jelly Bean. He then followed that up by stating any devices that do not get updated before the end of the year will come with a bonus.

If your Motorola handset from 2012 doesn’t get updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean before the end of the year Motorola will be offering all customers a $100 credit towards any of the new devices announced today. That means the DROID RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD, or the new budget-friendly RAZR M. The RAZR M is only $99 with a new 2-year contract so that means you DROID 4 owners could possibly get it free with that $100 voucher.

Between developer edition smartphones, HD devices with all day better life, and now timely updates with a guarantee this is indeed the “New Motorola.”

Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD officially announced

Motorola has just announced their hotly anticipated and new flagship Android smartphone here in NYC for the folks over on Verizon Wireless. After countless leaks this new DROID is finally official and comes packing a massive 2,530mAh battery for all day battery life. We’ve seen plenty of the DROID RAZR HD in the past month or so but head down below for the breakdown.

Motorola took the stage at their shared event with Verizon and quickly started off with how amazing the sales have been with their current RAZR line, then jumped into the evolution of the smartphone. This is the first event of this caliber since Google took over and named Dennis Woodside CEO so we are excited to see it all play out. Just as expected here’s all the details on the brand new Motorola DROID RAZR HD with 4G LTE and ICS.

Motorola’s hugely successful DROID RAZR didn’t come with an HD display which was quite disappointing but today however they’ve changed things up. This isn’t a massive improvement over the original but all the right places have been improved to offer a better experience. We knew they were coming but here’s the spec sheet. You get a beautiful and crisp 4.7-inch AMOLED HD display rocking a 1280 x 720p HD resolution — although will be sharing that space with dedicated on-screen Ice Cream Sandwich navigation buttons in favor of the outdated capacitive touch controls. This offers 73% more pixels than the previous RAZR. We love that Motorola has adopted this and hope the trend continues.

Then for the full round out we have Android 4.0.4 on board (Jelly Bean coming soon) powered by the extremely popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5 GHz dual-core S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. The 13 MP rumors were false and Motorola has confirmed the camera on the rear is 8 megapixels — but have improved it in all areas. It offers zero shutter lag and burst mode which is a growing trend as of late. Just like previous generations Motorola has kept the durable and splash-guard Kevlar design standard. This keeps the phone thin, lightweight, and extremely durable.

While staying RAZR thin the DROID RAZR HD combines the sleek design of the original with a happy-medium 2,530 mAh battery under the hood. And whoa, Motorola also announced a DROID RAZR MAXX HD too. More details coming soon. Motorola has just started off the event today and have a few more announcements and a budget smartphone hiding around here somewhere. Stay tuned for more details, coverage, and hands-on pictures and video as soon as humanly possible.

Motorola RAZR HD global edition hits FCC with LTE included

Motorola RAZR HD global edition hits FCC with LTE included

The global edition of the still-unannounced Motorola Droid RAZR HD, also known as the XT925, was just seen getting FCC approval. This likely won’t come as a shocker to many, since this device (alongside its Verizon counterpart) has been the victim of numerous leaks. What we did find as a little surprise, however, was the inclusion of LTE radios, specifically in bands 4 (AWS) and 17 (700MHz). Of course, we’re not expecting to see AT&T (the US carrier that utilizes both bands) pick this particular device up — especially since it recently launched the similarly specced Atrix HD — but it’ll be great for importers. The presence of AWS LTE indicates we’ll likely be seeing the XT925 flourish in Canada, and the 2G / 3G bands will certainly make it a prime candidate for sales in other markets around the world. Head to the source link to take a look at the docs, and the More Coverage section to view the XT925’s User Agent Profile. We’re still expecting to see Verizon’s variant (the XT926) on September 5th, though we’ll likely see the global version pop up pretty soon afterward.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD guides slip out to the web, pop the hype balloon (video)

Motorola Droid RAZR HD guides slip out to the web, pop the hype balloon video

Not that we were on pins and needles wondering what Motorola’s September 5th event would contain, but what vestige of mystery was left may just have been sapped away. A quartet of Motorola tutorial videos newly uncovered by YouTube user revowii walk users through the unannounced XT926, better known in unofficial circles as the Droid RAZR HD. It’s all about the looks in this leak: other than the conspicuous link to Verizon, what’s mostly validated here is the expected use of a customized Android 4.0 with on-screen navigation keys, much like the Atrix HD in AT&T’s corner of the universe. Earlier murmurings have the Droid RAZR HD carrying the same Snapdragon S4, 720p screen and LTE as well, which could leave the CDMA voice network, NFC and possibly increased storage as the only real differences. We’ll know the full truth in about two weeks’ time, but those who don’t mind a peek into the possible future can hop past the story break to indulge in some video time traveling.

Motorola teases mystery LTE phone, announces Friday reveal (update: no new device)

Motorola teases mystery LTE phone, announces Friday reveal

Taking to its Facebook page, Motorola has rewarded its loyal Likers with a tease: an LTE phone will be revealed on Friday, and the company will offer up a new clue about it every day leading up to the announcement. Our guess? We’d say we’re ripe for a Droid RAZR HD debut on Verizon right about now. Regardless, it seems that Moto’s pretty eager for this mysterious device — we just hope it’s worth the anticipation.

Update: It turns out that Motorola is not actually revealing a new device on Friday. Rather, it appears the company’s simply playing a game of “guess the smartphone” (the phone is already available in the US, apparently) and the answer will be unveiled on Friday.

FCC Fridays: August 3, 2012

FCC Fridays August 3, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!
