Blockbuster UK finds a rescuing buyer, keeps staff and stores afloat

Blockbuster UK retail

When Blockbuster’s UK brand entered administration at the start of the year, there were concerns that it would ultimately prove just another casualty of the inexorable move toward online video. Not quite: Gordon Brothers Europe, a private equity firm known for rescuing troubled companies, has bought Blockbuster’s British assets. The acquirer isn’t disclosing the cash involved, but it plans to keep 2,000 workers and 264 stores in full swing while it plots a turnaround. That recovery is only described in vague terms at this stage, however — Gordon Brothers plans to bring “new products” and “new technologies” to the bruised retail chain. While we’re glad to see a one-time cornerstone of video rentals get a second chance, we hope that its bounce-back strategy involves a more futureproof selection than aisles full of plastic discs.

[Thanks, Steven]

Disney mulling over possibility of Star Wars theme park

Remember back in October when Disney bought Lucasfilm for over $4 billion? Disney is looking to put that money to good use, and they’ve already announced that Star Wars: Episode VII will be making its way to theaters in 2015, but it seems the company is looking to expand the franchise even more by possibly creating a Star Wars-themed park at one of the company’s Disney parks.

According to screenshots taken from a survey that was given to season pass holders and other frequent goers of various Disney parks, the company is asking folks what they would think about a possible “Star Wars themed land at the Disneyland Resort.” Needless to say, Disney may be looking at adding a little bit of Star Wars to its parks, which would be pretty amazing.

Of course, Disney World has been home to the Star Tours amusement ride for some time now, which is a “3D, motion-simulated space flight that launches you into the world of Star Wars.” (Get a feel for it here.) However, it looks like Disney is wanting to expand on that to dedicate an entire section of one of its parks to Star Wars.

Another question in the survey asks people how familiar they are with the Star Wars series, including the characters, settings, and stories, in order to get a feel for how many of their loyal guests know about Star Wars. However, it seems like a pretty obvious question to us, and we bet that as long as Disney built such a park, people will come.

Iron Man Even Makes Getting Dressed Look Badass

It doesn’t show anywhere as much as the recent full-length trailer, but this short clip from Iron Man 3 shown at the Kids Choice Awards showing Stark suiting up in his latest generation suit is just as awesome. Seriously, if a superhero can make getting dressed look this badass, imagine what it will be like when he rains down vengeance on the Mandarin for blowing up his home. Can. Not. Wait. What’s the Best Weapon from a Sci-Fi or Fantasy Movie?

Here’s an argument to end all arguments: what’s the best weapon from a science fiction movie or fantasy movie or comic book or action flick or any type of movie where make believe weapons get invented? Is it the trusty light saber? Perhaps you’d rather trust yourself with Thor’s hammer. Or maybe even the ring from Lord of the Rings? Are you bold enough to pick Wolverine’s claws? You get the point. What’s the best weapon our human brains have ever thought of. More »

This Is the Pirate Bay’s Oldest Torrent

The Pirate Bay will be turning ten this year, quite the ripe old age for any website, much less one that’s been the target of such controversy. In preparation for celebrating that birthday, TorrentFreak went looking for the oldest Pirate Bay torrent they could find, and came across Revolution OS. More »

Sky Movies app finally arrives on Android

Sky Movies app finally arrives on Android

Sky’s Movies app may be old hat for iOS users, but the companion experience has only just arrived on Android. By wielding the software, folks can look up what’s airing across the network’s film channels, read up on information about flicks and look up theater listings. Users can also catch streaming movies with the application (if a device is registered with Sky Go, of course), and even remotely set their Sky+ HD box to record. Hit the bordering source link for the the full feature list and download.

Redbox Instant now available to the public

After being in closed beta for a few months, Redbox Instant is ready for public consumption (as previously rumored). The new movie-streaming service is Redbox’s newest initiative in partnership with Verizon. The companies first announced first announced plans for Redbox Instant over a year ago, and it’s now finally available for anyone wanting to sign up.

Redbox Instant currently offers around 4,600 titles to choose from, and along with the $8/month subscription, you’ll also get four one-night DVD rentals per month from any Redbox kiosk in the US. Plus, when you sign up now, you’ll get a one-month trial for free, which also comes with four DVD rentals to use at your disposal.

However, while Redbox Instant may be considered a Netflix competitor, Redbox Instant CEO Shawn Strickland says that it caters to different users. He says that the new service is for those who still value physical DVD rentals. Redbox Instant also focuses on movies for now, while Netflix has more of a TV show supplement.

The service is available on Android and iOS devices, as well as a handful smart televisions, including Google TV set-top boxes. It’s also available for the Xbox 360 as a console exclusive, although the service may launch on other consoles in the future. And as usual, you can also watch movies through Redbox Instant’s web interface.
