Voxeljet 3D printer used to produce Skyfall’s Aston Martin stunt double

DNP 3D printer used to produce Skyfall's Ashton Martin stunt double

Spoiler alert: a reoccurring cast member bids farewell in the latest James Bond flick. When the production of Skyfall called for the complete decimation of a classic 1960s era Aston Martin DB5, filmmakers opted for something a little more lifelike than computer graphics. The movie studio contracted the services of Augsburg-based 3D printing company Voxeljet to make replicas of the vintage ride. Skipping over the residential-friendly MakerBot Replicator, the company used a beastly industrial VX4000 3D printer to craft three 1:3 scale models of the car with a plot to blow them to smithereens. The 18 piece miniatures were shipped off to Propshop Modelmakers in London to be assembled, painted, chromed and outfitted with fake bullet holes. The final product was used in the film during a high-octane action sequence, which resulted in the meticulously crafted prop receiving a Wile E. Coyote-like sendoff. Now, rest easy knowing that no real Aston Martins were harmed during the making of this film. Head past the break to get a look at a completed model prior to its untimely demise.

James Bond Skyfall crew turned to 3D printers for Aston Martin DB5 stunt double

The Aston Martin DB5 is a classic piece of machinery, and it was featured in earlier James Bond films like Goldfinger and Thunderball over 50 years ago. The car also made an appearance in the latest Bond movie, Skyfall, where it exploded into flames during an intense action scene. However, what you saw in the movie was actually a 1:3 scale 3D-printed model of a DB5.

The filmmakers didn’t want to destroy an original Aston Martin DB5 (for obvious reasons), so they relied on a company called Voxeljet who used a massive VX4000 3D printer with 283 cubic feet of space to create three 1:3 scale models of the Aston Martin DB5, one of which saw its immediate death from an explosion in the movie.

In order to actually operate different parts of the car like the hood, doors, and the trunk, the makers constructed the replicas from 18 different components. After all the parts were made, they were sent off to Propshop Modelmakers in London to be assembled, finished, lacquered, and chromed to make them look exactly like the original.

It’s not said how much it cost to make one of these 3D-printed replicas, but one of the models that wasn’t destroyed in the movie was auctioned off for $100,000. Voxeljet says that this opportunity has opened up another door for the company, and says that more filmmakers may be using 3D-printed objects instead of 3D graphics in the future for better realistic scenes.

Skyfall Filmmakers 3D-Printed This Rare Aston Martin So They Wouldn’t Damage the Original

These days filmmakers often turn to computer graphics for scenes of destruction that would otherwise be too expensive or dangerous to stage in real life. But Skyfall posed a different problem. Namely that the effects crew didn’t want to damage a priceless 1960 Aston Martin DB 5 that appeared in the original Bond film 50 years ago. More »

The Hobbit Will Play in High Frame Rate at 450 Theaters Across North America

Peter Jackson’s version of The Hobbit has been causing a stir, because people expect its high frame rate—48 frames per second, no less—will make it look a bit like a 70s soap opera. The Hobbit Comes With an FAQ Explaining Why It’ll Look So Weird

Not every theater will be showing Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit in its native 48 frames-per-second. But for those that will, Warner Bros. has created this handy FAQ that explains why the HFR 3D (high frame rate) technology could make the film look like a TV soap opera. More »

Star Trek Into Darkness teams with Dolby Atmos

The next Star Trek big-time motion picture event “Star Trek Into Darkness” has been announced to be working with none other than Dolby Atmos for superior sound. The production teams at Bad Robot and director J.J. Abrams have let it be known that they’ll be integrating the Dolby Professional Reference Monitor PRM-4200 into their pre and post-production workflows and that the Dolby Atmos audio system will bring the whole Star Trek into Darkness soundtrack experience to a whole new galaxy. This film has been announced to be hitting theaters on May 17th, 2013.

This announcement has Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom Inc., bringing this news to ShowEast 2012 where they’ve made it clear that they’re aiming for the latest in technical achievements as well as cinematic storytelling with this new beast of a film. With the Dolby hardware and software they’ll be using here, the biggest and the best can be a reality, especially since Academy Award winner Andy Nelson and multiple Academy Award nominee Anna Behlmer are up in the re-recording mix laboratory for the Dolby Atmos mix.

Academy Award winner Ben Burtt and multiple Academy Award nominee Matt Wood are the supervising sound editors for this project as well, bringing a revolution to the sound experience with a “new level of creative control” afforded by Dolby. This experience is said to be bringing the “full impact of the sound mix” regardless of the configuration of the theater in which you’re experiencing Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013.

“We are in the incredible and lucky position to have access to the latest technology, the best possible tools, and the most talented artists in the business. We are therefore thrilled to announce that we will be employing the amazingly immersive Dolby Atmos audio system to bring the Star Trek into Darkness soundtrack to life.” – Abrams

Oddly this does not mean that every theater will have a certified Dolby Atmos experience – a list of theaters selected to show “Star Trek into Darkness in Dolby Atmos” will be released closer to the release date of the film. This film was written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci and is produced by the same trio along with Abrams. The film will be produced by the four through Bad Robot Productions and, again, will be directed by Abrams. SlashGear will be continuing to cover Star Trek Into Darkness until it’s released – stay tuned!

Horror Movies Scare Those Extra Pounds Away

I haven’t watched a horror movie in years. The last time I did, I screamed my head off and kept imagining weird faces and dark figures where there were none for months afterwards. I am, however, trying to lose weight, although I think I’ll stick to traditional exercises despite these new developments.

And by ‘new developments’, I mean the one uncovered by a recent study that the University of Westminster did, which was commissioned by UK video rental company LOVEFiLM.

Horror WeightSo what’s the connection between losing weight and watching scary movies? Apparently, there’s a lot. Because of your body’s reaction when you’re watching something that could scare the living daylights out of you, you might end up losing weight more quickly because of your fear. Apparently, you can burn as many as 113 extra calories by watching 90 minutes of stress-inducing horror flicks. As a matter of fact, a single viewing of The Shining burned off 184 calories.

Horror Movies

According to physiologist Dr. Richard McKenzie: “As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline… It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories.”

Sounds like torture. Personally, I’ll stick to my diet and exercises for now because I don’t think I can stomach all this horror just to ‘scare away’ the calories.

George Lucas speaks on Star Wars Episode 7 and Disney deal

What a day for Star Wars fans – not only was it revealed that Disney had purchased LucasFilm Limited, but we also found out that Star Wars Episode VII is currently in the works for release in 2015. Those are both major announcements, especially the one about Episode VII since George Lucas said constantly that he was done making movies in the series after Episode III was released. It turns out that he was telling the truth, as he won’t be making Star Wars Episode VII, instead only acting as a consultant.

So, what now? What’s in store for the Star Wars franchise now that it’s part of Disney‘s portfolio? There are undoubtedly a ton of questions bouncing around in the heads of Star Wars fans after today, but luckily, we’re getting some explanation from the man himself, George Lucas. He and Kathleen Kennedy, who has been named the new president of LucasFilm, have taken some time to talk about the future of the franchise in a brand new YouTube video, which you can check out below.

Concerning the buyout, Lucas says, “There’s lots and lots of opportunities at Disney we wouldn’t have at any other studio.” Kennedy agreed with that notion, pointing to Disney’s success with Marvel and Pixar and adding, “In many ways, it’s the best company possible to take Star Wars into the future.” Lucas is turning over the Star Wars universe to Kennedy, saying that he’s already got treatments of the seventh, eighth, and ninth movies ready to be turned into films.

It sounds like there’s more beyond another trilogy in the pipeline too, as Lucas says there are even more movie ideas in the LucasFilm vault. Kennedy seems eager to get right to work on these new Star Wars movies, saying that LucasFilm is in the beginning stages of developing Episode VII. We have to say that we’re pretty excited to see what Disney can do with the Star Wars franchise – are you?

Batmobiles new and old hit the streets for Dark Knight Rises DVD release

The Dark Knight Rises – one of the biggest movies of the year – will be releasing on DVD and Blu Ray soon (December 4 to be specific), and Warner Bros. has one whopper of a promotion planned for the lead up to release. Starting this weekend, Warner Bros. will send a total of six Batmobiles on tour across the country. The Batmobiles span most of Batman’s Hollywood history, starting with the version seen in 1966′s Batman, The Movie starring Adam West and ending with the black and camo Tumblers seen in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy.

Of course, there were plenty of Batmobiles between 1966 and 2012, and those will all be on display too. These include the Batmobile Michael Keaton drove in Batman and Batman Returns, the one Val Kilmer cruised around in Batman Forever, and the one from 1997′s beyond terrible Batman and Robin. As an added bonus, the Batpod from Christopher Nolan’s films will be on display as well.

The tour kicks off this weekend at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas. On Saturday, the Batmobiles will be parked outside the Miller Lite Club, while on Sunday, they’ll be on display at half-time during the Cowboys’ game against the New York Giants. After the stint in Arlington, the Batmobiles will move onto Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Lousiana the weekend of November 3.

More dates will be announced later on, so no, the Batmobiles will not just be visiting those locations listed above. Make no mistake, if you’re a Bat-fan, this is about as good a chance as any to catch a glimpse at the various Batmobiles that have graced the silver screen throughout the years. Will you be making the trip to see these Batmobiles in person?
