Iron Man 3 trailer: Crash, bang, wallop, what a picture!

If the bizarre 18s teaser-trailer for Iron Man 3 whet your appetite – basically a trailer for a trailer – then you’ll definitely be wanting to head beyond the cut to see the full trailer for the upcoming Marvel movie. Seeing Robert Downey Jr. reprise his role as Tony Stark, Iron Man 3 pits the eponymous hero against The Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley, who – if the trailer is anything to go by – seems determined to blow everything up.

That includes Stark and his wife Pepper Potts, with Gwyneth Paltrow returning to gather some new bruises as she’s apparently violently kidnapped. Val Kilmer and Don Cheadle are also on the star list.

“With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him” Marvel says of the film. “As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?”

It’s all textbook superhero-movie stuff, but that doesn’t mean we’re not excited. There’s plenty of time to build up enthusiasm, too, with the movie not expected to open in theaters until April 2013.

Jurassic Park’s Velociraptor built from ground up in new behind-the-scenes video

Jurassic Park was a movie that captivated audiences when it launched back in 1993 (has it really been that long?). Today, we’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at the construction of the Velociraptor suits for the movie in a new video that comes courtesy of the Stan Winston School of Character Arts. In it, Stan Winston Studio supervisor John Rosengrant takes us through the process of not only building the raptor suit, but performing in one too.

True, most of the dinosaurs we see in Jurassic Park were computer-generated, but for some shots, Spielberg and his production team needed either animatronics or people in dinosaur suits. The scene in the kitchen where Lex and Tim are being hunted by two Velociraptors was apparently one of those scenes, and Rosengrant was actually in a Velociraptor suit during that shot. The folks at Geek Tyrant were surprised to find that out, and we have to say that we’re right there with them – up until now, we simply thought those raptors were entirely computer-generated.

In watching this video, it becomes apparent just how much work Stan Winston and the folks at Stan Winston Studio put into Jurassic Park, despite the fact that one of the biggest draws of the movie was its use of computer-generated dinosaurs. Stan Winston did his job well though, as evidenced in the fact that we’re only today finding out that there were actually men in raptor suits during some of those scenes. It’s really a fascinating look behind-the-scenes, and we have to recommend that any fan of Jurassic Park check it out below.

Pretty cool, huh? It won’t be long before Jurassic Park is back in theaters, ready to captivate a new generation, as a 3D re-release of the movie is scheduled to release in April of next year. We’re not sure how we feel about that, but dinosaurs in any form are always better than no dinosaurs at all. What do you think of this video? Are you impressed with the work the folks at Stan Winston Studio put into Jurassic Park?

Google Knowledge Graph adds explanations for related content, finds the six degrees with less Bacon

We had a bit of a laugh with Google’s Kevin Bacon calculator. Not everyone needs to tie their searches to the star of Footloose, though, which is partly why Google is pushing out an update to its Knowledge Graph that explains how searches turn up related items. The effort is starting with actors, celebrities and their links to any movies and TV shows they’ve starred in. Looking for Orson Welles and mousing over Rita Hayworth’s portrait reminds us that the two luminaries were married for years, for example. We won’t know when the more intelligent searches will expand, but at least we won’t be quite so confused if the animated Transformers movie appears next to Citizen Kane.

This is the Modem World: It’s my movie

“No worries, we can watch this movie on my iPad on the plane,” I announced with confidence.

“Oh really? Cool. Let’s do that!” she replied, proud of her little nerdy man.

Yup. I was cool. I was going to rip a DVD that we just bought to watch on my iPad on a long flight to Korea. How amazed would she be when that movie so easily pops up on the Retina display as we ease into complimentary wine and processed air for a good 13 hours!

And then I tried to actually complete the task of getting a movie from a DVD to an iPad.

Netflix streaming launches in Sweden

Sweden is home to some of the world’s better known movie makers and some very high speed data connections, but it has only had so much love from movie streaming services that you’d think would be a natural match. Netflix is making that union a reality today through the launch of its Watch Instantly service in the country. Pay 79 kronor ($12) a month and you’ll get access to a mix of both international and domestic movies and TV shows on any device that can take Netflix in the country, which includes at least computers as well as Android and iOS devices. Other Nordic territories are still promised as coming soon; although that won’t be much help to Danes, Finns or Norwegians, we’re sure Swedes won’t mind having one more excuse to flaunt their cheap fiber internet access.

Jurassic Park IV production art emerges showing creepy hybrids

Back in 2007, the script for the not-gonna-happen-anytime-soon fourth installment of Jurassic Park was reviewed by Ain’t it Cool, revealing just how strange and different and potentially awesome the movie could be. Fast forward a few years, and production art for the script has surfaced over at NeoGAF, showing walking dinosaurs with an attitude and dino-human hybrids. Industrial Light and Magic denies that the rendered images came from its studios.

From Industrial Light and Magic:

Not sure where this stuff came from but it’s not from a production we’ve worked on. Looks like someone’s personal work – ILM doesn’t put © lines on our work like in those images – we don’t own the work – the clients do.

The images are a mixture of drawn and rendered photos, and they seem to match up with the review posted of the Jurassic Park IV script. For those unfamiliar, here’s a basic synopsis of the film: Main character Nick Harris travels to Isla Nublar on a secret mission for John Hammond, where he is captured by excavaraptors and security working for Grendel Corporation, who owns the island. Harris is then taken to a facility in Switzerland, where he discovers that Hammond has the brilliant ideal to (illegally) mix dino DNA with dogs and humans, creating some pretty formidable beasts.

The five hybrids are called deinonychus, which kinda sorta resemble a T-rex, only they’ve been laced with dog DNA to make them obedient. In addition to perhaps being loyal, the deinonychus’ are also super strong and fast, with keen hearing and smelling abilities, and improved forelegs, since we all know those are a T-rex’s weak spot. Specifically, the hybrids have longer, more dexterous fingers and stronger forelegs. The best part? They’re bugged with an implant that offers a shot of adrenaline or serotonin when needed.

At the end of it all, the script makes room for Jurassic Park V, and, according to Ain’t it Cool’s review, involves set pieces “much bigger than anything we’ve seen in the other films.” After all this, it isn’t surprising to see why the movie was nixed. After all, human-dog-dinosaur hybrids with adrenaline-shooting implants, ripped biceps, and a face only a mother could love being used to destroy the existing dinosaur population seems both awesome and entirely insane.
