12 Moving Image Machines That Make Animated GIFs IRL [Video]

Before there were GIFs there were motion pictures. And before film on reels, these “movies” were made up of actual printed still images that zipped in front of your eyes in rapid succession with the help of machinery. Our friends at Oobject collected a batch of crazy zoetropes and other machines, both and new, that create moving images. No photoshop required. More »

Cinerama: The Future of Movies That Never Was [Past Perfect]

Back in the 1950s, the movie theater was a venue for radical experimentation. As the home TV kept people rooted to their sofas and out of cinemas, Hollywood was bold in the way it used technology to lure people back to the silver screen. Cinerama was just one of those ideas—but one that crashed and burned. More »

How Time Travel Works in Movies [Video]

Do you know how time travel works? Unless you’re some master scientist in the theories of special and general relativity and law of physics, probably not. So why not let Hollywood explain it to you. Here’s how time travel works, according to the movies. More »

Google HQ opens for Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson’s movie crew

There’s tons of extra cameras and colorful chairs hanging around Google‘s Headquarters in California. That’s because it’s the set of what is surely going to be an awesome new movie — or a giant commercial for Google. The epic duo of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson from Wedding Crashers are back, this time for a new movie called “The Internship.”

If you didn’t like Wedding Crashers then I don’t know what to tell you, because it was awesome. The duo are at it again shooting a new movie that while mostly was shot off of Google’s lawn, recently they’ve been right at the HQ having some fun. Since they couldn’t give up their entire office for months and months, the movies been shot at Georgia Tech, and bits and pieces at Google’s HQ. Awesome right?

That isn’t all either. We’re expecting tons of Googlers themselves to star as extras in the film. Those include Co-founder Sergery Brin, and top dogs like Hugo Barra, and more. This might not be quite like “The Social Network” but I’m betting it’ll be pretty awesome. Isn’t everything that Google does awesome? For more details you’ll surely want to check out this short video clip starring my man from Swingers, Vince Vaughn himself:

While Bloomberg reported that Google doesn’t have any financials involved with the movie, you have to wonder a bit with so many big hitters on the ground. Apparently Eric Schmidt interviewed Vince Vaughn for an employee talk (which should be online soon) and even Sergey Brin hosted a dinner and what surely was a fun party at his property in California for much of the movie crew. Here’s what Google had to say about the film:

We’re excited that Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson chose the Google campus as a backdrop for their first film together since ‘Wedding Crashers.’ We’re sure they’ll have a humorous take on life in Silicon Valley and look forward to seeing the result.”

So more on Google. Sergey Brin’s special Google Project X toys will apparently be making a few cameos during the film too. We are expecting to see Google Glass (which we’re excited about here) as well as Google’s Driver-less cars and more. Vaughn states he wrote the script without a major company in mind but after meeting a few from Google, decided to take that approach. Good stuff. I can’t wait to see it!

Sky and Warner Bros. ink exclusive movie deal: iTunes, Netflix left out in cold

Movie lovers in the UK may struggle to find their title of choice to watch in the coming months, with news that Sky and Warner Bros. have signed an exclusive deal for new and back-catalog titles. The agreement covers both Sky’s on-demand and subscription Sky Movies services, and will see new Warner Bros. releases hit the broadcaster roughly six months after they finish showing in theaters. Other services will have to wait out a twelve month exclusivity period after that before they can offer titles like The Dark Knight Rises, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Meanwhile, older titles from Warner Bros. storerooms will also be exclusive to Sky Movies. That includes all of the Batman movies, The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, all Superman movies and Lethal Weapon 1, 2 and 3. Sky will offer them via its NOW TV IPTV service as well, though only to Sky customers.

It’s not the only Sky deal in recent weeks that has seen content become scarcer. Earlier this month, the broadcaster inked a deal for exclusive Bond film access, which saw the entire catalog of 007 films quietly yanked from the iTunes UK store. Instead, they’ll be shown on a dedicated on-demand channel on Sky.

HD and 3D versions of films will be shown, where available, though Sky is yet to confirm how much it will be asking for each title. Still, it’s a blow to rival services such as iTunes, Netflix, LOVEFILM, and other pay-per-view offerings, which will now face a sizable hole in their catalogs.

Sky bags exclusive rights Warner Bros. movie catalog, makes LoveFilm and others wait

Sky beats LoveFilm, bags exclusive rights to Warner Bros movie catalogue

Sky has bested its broadcast and video-on-demand rivals by signing a deal with Warner Bros. for exclusive rights to its films in the UK and Ireland. Once the six-month cinema window has elapsed, each new flick (including Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises) will remain Murdoch-only for a full year before arriving on LoveFilm and its kind. Meanwhile, back-catalog titles like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix will remain locked in the partnership’s walled garden for an undisclosed period of time. Good news if you’re a Sky customer, we suppose, and not if you’re not.

Twentieth Century Fox inks deal to bring over 600 titles to Google Play

Google’s ecosystem of music and movies has been growing at a fast pace, but today Google announced another deal to bring over 600 movies and TV shows to the Google Play Store and YouTube. Google and 20th Century Fox have been in discussions since July and are finally bringing their content to Android.

The fact that we’ll soon be able to rent and enjoy Family Guy right from our Android tablets has me plenty excited. Not only that but we’ll also be getting movies weeks before they hit on DVD all available on Android smartphones and tablets. Today the news was released over on Google’s official blog.

Prometheus, the awesome movie we’re huge fans of here is actually available right this minute to rent or purchase from Google Play. You can even get it on HD by clicking here. It’s still 3 weeks away from being available on DVD — well done Google! Twentieth Century Fox plans to offer this early access to multiple new movies in the future so if you’re not a fan of Prometheus, maybe their upcoming film Taken 2 will be what you’re looking for.

Google already has Paramount pictures on board and are slowly getting all six major movie studios to sign on too. Twentieth Century Fox is offering tons of TV shows on Google Play as well. While I’m not a fan of Glee they’ll also be offering Family Guy, Modern Family and more for those interested. While this is currently only available to the US and parts of Australia Google plans to further their reach as soon as possible.

Fox kicks off its Digital HD initiative by joining Google Play and YouTube, offering movies early

Google Play and YouTube add Fox movies and TV shows, use Prometheus as a lure

Fox embraced a radical thought when it outlined its Digital HD initiative earlier this month: customers are more likely to buy digital movies if the content isn’t artificially delayed and priced to match the releases on conventional discs. The studio is about to see if that gamble on common sense pays off. As of today, you’ll find 600-plus Fox movies ready to buy or rent in HD across every major digital video store in the US, with many downloads cleared to arrive ahead of their physical counterparts at lower prices that reflect a disc-free reality. The media giant has also decided to play nicely with Google after a longstanding absence, putting its movies and TV shows on Google Play Movies and YouTube. Its tentpole movie release Prometheus is unsurprisingly being used as the prime incentive to try Digital HD; the title is available online three weeks before the Blu-ray launch at a more reasonable $15 price. The sci-fi thriller is even Fox’s first movie destined for UltraViolet cloud lockers. Only Americans will have expanded access to movies and TV at first, but it shouldn’t be too long before many countries can be creeped out by Michael Fassbender’s android — including on their Android devices.

Netflix for iPhone update adds ‘continue watching’ bar, more titles to home screen (video)

Netflix for iPhone gets updated, lets you continue watching where you left off, adds more titles to home screen video

It’s not just the Android side of things that’s getting a little love from Netflix, the iPhone app just got a refresh too. The new design brings the mobile version much more inline with the tablet edition that got a revamp last December. The update brings with it the ability to resume watching shows, right from the top of the app view, along with the sliding rows of titles, and custom recommendations that you may be familiar with from other versions. The new interface gets the official walk-through in the video after the break, but as it’s available now, you might just want to fondle the source link directly.
