Space, the final frontier… for street art. No, we’re not quite ready to tag the International Space Station, but a pair of artists in San Francisco is working on bring space down to Earth with a series of murals depicting everything from constellations to nebulae. And, boy, are they pretty.

This project is from 2010, but it’s such an amazing and unusual achievement it’s still worth sharing today. Artist Pete Fecteau created a huge mural commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. out of more than 4,000 individual Rubik’s cubes, with each square on each cube hand-arranged to create the detailed image you see above.

In 1979, two artists covered a Southern California building with futuristic murals. They painted moon motorcycles, high-tech highways, and spaceships that would look right at home in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. But as delightfully retro-futuristic as the building is on the outside, what happens inside may surprise you. It’s the Culver City DMV.
