Nokia MWC 2014 Webcast Teaser Hints At Android Device

Nokia MWC 2014 Webcast Teaser Hints At Android Device

Nokia’s preferred colors for its branding have almost always been blue and white, though recently when it went green, speculation fired about once again about its much rumored Nokia X smartphone. Since last year it has been rumored consistently that Nokia is working on an Android powered smartphone, even though for the last couple of years it has only exclusively made Windows Phone smartphones. The device is reportedly called Nokia X, and the Nokia MWC 2014 webcast teaser certainly seems to hint at that, with four arrows converging to form an X above a green background.

The Next Samsung Galaxy S Takes Shape

    galaxy-note-3

Samsung has a new flagship smartphone coming soon, likely at Mobile World Congress next week, and new details are emerging about what the next smartphone from the Korean mobile giant will be packing. It’ll have a sharper, larger 5.2-inch display according to Bloomberg, better battery and camera, and possibly both eye- and fingerprint-scanning technology.

The fingerprint scanner report comes from Sammobile, a company-focused site that has a decent track record when it comes to Samsung hardware rumors. The site confirmed yesterday that Samsung’s Galaxy S5 will feature a fingerprint sensor, which is able to register up to eight different fingerprints for use in performing different tasks, from unlocking the device to launching specific apps, as well as opening special personal folders and enabling a new Private Mode that unveils hidden files and apps. You swipe your finger across the home key, where the sensor is located, to use stored fingerprint functions, unlike on the iPhone 5s, where only holding your finger on the sensor is required.

As for the other features reported by Bloomberg, they include the standard sorts of improvements that Android OEMs include in their generational updates. The display is said to be 5.2 inches diagonally, which is 0.2 inches larger than the current Galaxy S4′s screen. It’s also said to be “sharper,” which presumably means it’ll get a higher resolution than the current 1080 x 1920 (which still amounts to a whopping 441 ppi).

Details of the improvements to camera and battery tech aren’t included in the Bloomberg report, but previous reports peg the rear camera at 16MP, and battery capacity rumors range from a fast-charging 2,900 mAh lithium ion battery to a more capacious 3,200 mAh.

We won’t have to wait long to find out who’s right: Samsung’s Unpacked5 event happens on February 24 at 8 PM CET, and we’ll be providing you live updates of what’s announced right here at TechCrunch as they happens.

Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Sensor ‘Confirmed,’ Implementation Detailed

Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Sensor Confirmed, Implementation Detailed

There is no shortage of rumors about the Galaxy S5 fingerprint sensor, they actually popped up late last year when speculation about the upcoming flagship started to heat up. Today the folks at Sammobile have “confirmed” that Samsung’s new smartphone really will have the fingerprint sensor and that contrary to popular belief, it will actually be housed underneath the home button as opposed to the display. Previous rumors suggested that the Galaxy S5 display itself could be capable of recognizing fingerprints, but that doesn’t seem to be happening, at least as far as this scribe is concerned.

HTC Music Centric Phone Expected In First Half Of 2014

HTC’s future smartphone plans are not known at this point in time, and that’s nothing unusual. OEMs often hold their cards close to their chest and don’t reveal more than what’s absolutely necessary at any given time. Right now all eyes are on HTC to launch its 2014 flagship, the M8, its HTC One successor at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona later this month. A new rumor gives us a hint of what’s to come after this major industry event, presumably HTC is working on a music centric smartphone that will be released in the first half of 2014.

O2 Germany Pegs Galaxy S5 Release For Late February

O2 Germany Pegs Galaxy S5 Release For Late FebruaryBased on Samsung’s Unpacked 5 date, we can only assume that Samsung will be taking the wrap off the Galaxy S5 on the 24th of February 2014. Either that or Samsung has other devices that might be announced in its place, although we’re guessing that the Galaxy S5’s announcement is probably a good candidate. That being said, while the handset might be announced on the 24th of February, when will it be made available for purchase? Unlike Apple who typically makes their products available for purchase within 1-2 weeks of its announcement, that usually isn’t the case for Android OEMs, but could Samsung be changing their tune this year?

According to carrier O2 in Germany, they have put up a registration page for the Samsung Galaxy S5 in which they state that the handset would be released “late-February”, suggesting that the phones could go on sale shortly after its announcement at MWC 2014. Also as you can see in the screenshot above, O2 seems to be hinting that the Samsung Galaxy S5 could have waterproof features, which coincidentally enough was one of the rumored features of the device. In any case we guess we will learn more next week at MWC 2014, so check back with us then for the details!

Huawei’s MWC 2014 Promo Stars The iPhone And Siri

Huawei has impressed us in the past with its powerful handsets. This is actually a change of pace for the company whom a few years ago, mostly released low-mid ranged devices that extremely affordable prices. Now word on the street has it that Huawei might have a new phone in the works called the Ascend D3 which could be announced at MWC 2014. The handset, based on the rumors, sounds like a pretty powerful device with an octa-core of Huawei’s own making, a 5-inch Full HD display, and a 16MP rear-facing camera. Perhaps in a bid to help build some hype and generate some interest, Huawei has recently released a video in which the title reads, “We are ready to amaze the world again!”

Oddly enough despite Huawei having an entire stable of smartphones to call their own, the video shows what appears to be an iPhone running a cloned version of Siri which describes the sort of products we might be able to look forward to from Huawei at MWC 2014. Now upon first glance, many would assume that this is an iPhone commercial because let’s face it, the design of the phone is similar to that of the iPhone, and the interface for the voice assistant is also reminiscent of Siri. Unless the phone is actually the design of an upcoming Huawei handset, this is certainly an odd way to get people excited. The video even goes as far as poking fun at Apple and Samsung, although rather ironic given the actual video itself. What do you guys think?
