Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 spotted at MWC, almost hides your entire hand (updated with video)

Samsung Galaxy Note 80 spotted at MWC,

At last, here’s what we’ve been promised: an 8-inch flavor of Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup. Spotted by an anonymous tipster on the MWC show floor earlier today, the booth shows off said tablet designed with portrait usage in mind, meaning it’ll pretty much cover up most of whichever hand you’ll be holding it with. And obviously, the Note 8.0 comes with a stylus as well. There’s not much more to share at this point, but we’ll be seeing this new device in its full glory very soon, so stay tuned. One more shot after the break.

Update: The folks over at Beste Product caught a few models posing with the Galaxy Note 8.0 for Samsung’s photographer. The Dutch website even has a video — embedded after the break — of the whole action, and there you can see some design similarities of the tablet’s backside, especially how the camera protrudes a little.

ASUS teases new PadFone MWC launch, with help from talking Christopher Columbus statue

ASUS teases PadFone MWC launch, with help from a Christopher Columbus statue

The latest MWC teaser video from ASUS is light on the details and heavy on the talking statue. The 33-second video titled “A New Discovery at Hand,” features Barcelona’s Columbus Monument taking a phone call on his stone tablet and the tag line “Join ASUS to Discover a New World.” No mentions of PadFones (or, for that matter, FonePads) in the video itself, though the accompanying text promises that those who attend the company’s February 25th press conference will witness “Pad and Phone come together.”

MWC 2013 preview: what we can expect

MWC 2013 preview what we can expect

We here at Engadget are awfully fond of those hunks of metal, motherboards and magic we call smartphones and tablets, and Mobile World Congress is determined to gather as many as possible on an annual basis. Indeed, this year’s show, held in beautiful Barcelona at the Fira Gran Via, is not just a weeklong event — in fact, it’s already started. A handful of companies have announced their key products in an attempt to gather some crucial pre-show buzz, but does that mean there’s nothing left for us to hunt for? Absolutely not. Gather with us beyond the break and we’ll tell you about everything that’s already been announced, as well as what we can expect from the rest of the mobile extravaganza.

Metaio with ST-Ericsson Built First Augmented Reality Hardware

[MWC 2013] Today, Metaio announced an agreement with ST-Ericsson, in which the semi conductor manufacturer agrees to integrate  Metaio’s Augmented Reality hardware IP, also known as “AREngine”, into its upcoming mobile platforms via the “first application processor accelerating Augmented Reality performance on mobile devices”, according to Metaio.

We know Metaio from its Augmented Reality  mobile browser, and its multiple innovations in the field.

We do not know much about this new hardware from the information we got from Metaio, we need to ask for more details.  According to the company, the new chipset “will improve nearly all aspects of an Augmented Reality experience, yielding performance increases in speed, precision and power consumption, with up to 60 times faster initialization, more than an AR app running on existing platforms – the highest to date in the mobile industry”. In addition, Metaio claims that its AREngine “drastically reduces power consumption making all-day AR experiences possible”.

Huawei GL07S Announced For Japan, Resembles The Ascend P2

Huawei GL07S Announced For Japan, Resembles The Ascend P2A couple of weeks ago the Huawei Ascend P2 was spotted in some leaked photos and with an event invite pegged for the 24th of February, it would seem as if Huawei could be announcing the device then. However in the meantime it looks like Japanese carrier Emobile has announced a certain Huawei GL07S smartphone, and based on the press shot in the picture above, we can’t help but feel that this device shares a striking resemblance to the Ascend P2. While aesthetically it might look like the P2, there is one notable difference between the models, and that is its processor.

According to the rumors, the Ascend P2 is said to sport a 1.8GHz quad-core processor developed by Huawei themselves. However in the case of the GL07S, it will feature a 1.5GHz quad-core processor instead. Apart from that, other minor differences include larger internal storage at 32GB and a slightly larger battery at 2,350mAh versus the 2,200mAh. It measures 8.6mm thin and will also come with 2GB of RAM and a 13MP camera along with 4G LTE connectivity, making it Emobile’s first LTE smartphone.

Qualcomm formally details lower-end Snapdragon 400 and 200 processors

Qualcomm formally details lowerend Snapdragon 200 and 400 processors

We knew way back at CES that Qualcomm had a few lower-end chips up its sleeve, but now it’s official: the Snapdragon 400 and 200 have been formally detailed in a company blog post thrown up today. Following in the footsteps of the high-end Snapdragon 800 and 600, these units are being aimed at “the mid-tier and entry level smartphone segments.” The 400 options include dual Krait CPUs running at up to 1.7GHz per core, quad ARM Cortex-A7 CPUs humming along at up to 1.4GHz per core, and an Adreno 305 GPU. You’ll also find support for TDSCDMA, DC-HSPA+ (42Mbps), 1x Advanced, W+G CDMA, and multi-SIM capabilities of Dual SIM, Dual Standby (DSDS) and Dual SIM, Dual Active (DSDA), as well as support for up 13.5 megapixel camera sensors, 1080p video capture / playback and Miracast wireless display tech. For the number nerds, Snapdragon 400 processors now include the following part numbers: 8226, 8626, 8230, 8630, 8930, 8030AB, 8230AB, 8630AB and 8930AB.

As for the 200, you’ll get quad ARM Cortex-A5 CPUs at up to 1.4GHz per core, an Adreno 203 GPU, HD video playback, GPS, LPDDR2 RAM, multi-SIM support and the ability to handle up to 8 megapixel camera sensors. Snapdragon 200 processors now include the following part numbers: 8225Q, 8625Q. Unfortunately, pricing is being kept under wraps, and it seems that Qually is going to leave it to its wondrous partners to actually announce new hardware that’ll be powered by its latest duo. With Mobile World Congress kicking off in a matter of days, something tells us you won’t have to wait much longer for the nitty-gritty.

LG Optimus F7, Optimus F5 Leaks Before MWC Announcement

LG Optimus F7, Optimus F5 Leaks Before MWC AnnouncementLG released a video teasing its upcoming announcements at MWC in Barcelona next week which we believed was teasing a new device in its L, G, V and F-series. One day later, we now know a portion of what LG is planning to unveil at MWC thanks once again to everyone’s favorite Android-device leaker, evleaks.

The leaked press shot features two devices called the LG Optimus F7 (left) and Optimus F5 (right). Both devices seem to feature some kind of white plastic, or maybe a metallic front based on how reflective the device seems to be in the press shot.

No internal specifications were leaked along with the image, but we believe it’s safe to say both the LG Optimus F7 and Optimus F5 will run on Android and allow you to make a phone call of some kind, as well as checking messages and possibly taking pictures. We know this is the kind of professional research you look forward to from us at Ubergizmo.

ASUS Teases Upcoming ‘Metallic Miracle’ MWC Announcement

Mobile World Congress is coming next week and our team is already en route to Barcelona to prepare for the onslaught of mobile content. We’re sure there will be a number of big announcements for upcoming mobile devices at MWC, one of which will come from ASUS as they released a video teasing their upcoming announcement.

The teaser video is called “Ultimate Craftmanship. Today.” and shows a UFO flying over Barcelona while people in the city watch it land on a church. The video then ends with a invitation to its viewers to “join ASUS to embrace the metallic miracle” on February 25, during Mobile World Congress.

We’re not entirely sure what exactly a UFO landing on a church in Barcelona means as we can’t imagine such an act results in the future of mobile technology. If we had to guess based on the video and the message, we could expect whatever ASUS has to unveil will be made of chrome or some other material made of metal. Haven’t the recent leaks of its upcoming Fonepad hinted at a metal back?

Samsung Galaxy Star Rumored To Be A Low-End Android Device

Samsung Galaxy Star Rumored To Be A Low End Android DeviceOne of the ways Samsung has managed to capture a greater share of the market is by offering devices ranging from high-end, like the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2, to low-end budget Android devices that can be bought by those shopping on a budget. Now the good news is that if you’re looking for a new budget Android device for 2013, Samsung might have something for you in the form of the Galaxy Star. This alleged device will apparently be announced at MWC 2013 which will be taking place next week. The Galaxy Star GT-S5282 will be a low-end Android handset and it is possible that the Galaxy Star moniker is merely a codename, and that it could actually be the Galaxy Y.

The device will feature a 3” display with QVGA resolution, a 2MP camera, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot for memory expansion with support for up to 32GB, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a 1,200mAh battery and will run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which all things considered is pretty much the highlight of this device. No word on how much it will cost or when it will be made available, but given its specs it will probably go easy on your wallet. In any case we will be live at MWC 2013 in Barcelona, so if you’re hankering for more mobile news, be sure to check back with us then for all the coverage!
