LG Optimus G2 Rumored For Fall Release With Android 5.0

LG Optimus G 15 LG Optimus G2 Rumored For Fall Release With Android 5.0Fans of the LG Optimus G might recall that a few weeks ago, it was suggested that the Optimus G2 could get a possible announcement at CES 2013, but unfortunately the event came and went and apart from new LG TVs, there was no mention of the handset at all. Now according to new reports, it seems that the reason why the Optimus G2 did not make its scheduled CES appearance was due to the handset apparently being delayed for later on this year, and will be delayed until the Fall of 2013 which is when Google is expected to release its next major build of Android – Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Specs of the device aren’t known at the moment, but many are pretty sure it will sport a Full HD display which seems to be the trend these days.

However at the same time there have also been rumors that LG could be unveiling a quad-core, Full HD 5.5” Android smartphone at MWC 2013 called the Optimus GK, so we’re not sure what to make of this just yet. Either way MWC 2013 will be taking place in over a month’s time and we will be on site, so check back with us then for all the details. In the meantime we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now.

Samsung Galaxy Pocket Plus details surface, said to be launching soon

Rumors of new Samsung devices are commonplace in the smartphone world, but today we’re getting details about a rumored Samsung phone that probably isn’t going to turn as many heads as the Galaxy S III or the Galaxy Note II did. Regardless, say hello to the Galaxy Pocket Plus, which is rumored to be launching soon. Judging from the image below – which comes courtesy of SamMobile – the Galaxy Pocket Plus isn’t going to be anywhere close to the high-end of the smartphone scale, but should prove to be a suitable device for those who want to snag a smartphone on the cheap.

GalaxyPocketPlus-w400

Luckily enough, SamMobile’s picture is accompanied by a number of details on the phone. We’re hearing that the Galaxy Pocket Plus will come equipped with a Broadcom BCM21654 processor clocked at 850Mhz, a 1,200mAh battery, Bluetooth 3.0, and a 2MP camera. If you’re taking a look at that picture and think the screen looks small, you’re right on the money – that QVGA TFT display is only 2.8-inches in size.

We probably shouldn’t be surprised by that, considering that Samsung has opted to include the word “Pocket” in the phone’s name. Rest assured, this is probably going to be one tiny phone, so those who struggle with larger screens might find some value in this handset. This phone will reportedly be running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich behind a downgraded version of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.

The latest rumors say that Samsung is planning a European launch for this lil’ guy in the first half of 2013, so it’s a distinct possibility that we’ll see it at MWC 2013 in Barcelona next month. Assuming Samsung is indeed shooting for a first half of 2013 launch for the device, it makes sense that Samsung would want to show it off at Mobile World Congress, which is where the device will have the best chance of getting some press attention. We’ll be right there at MWC 2013 reporting live, so keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more.

LG confirms Nexus 4 still in production with no 5 on the books

If there’s one element in the news universe here that tells us Google is doing things right, it’s the constant talk and response to a new Nexus smartphone – even when the current model is doing exceedingly well on the market. Here in first quarter of 2013 heading into Spring (or maybe that’s just wishful thinking), we’ve got rumors galore of a Nexus 5 being worked on for release at Mobile World Congress 2013 from LG, none other than the manufacturers of the Nexus 4. Today they’ve confirmed that no, that doesn’t make any sense, and that yes, they’re still making massive amounts of the current Google hero Nexus 4 for the time being.

squares-580x287

The word was that even thought the Google Nexus 4, manufactured by LG, was doing much better on the market than anyone had guessed, that they’d be creating a Nexus 5 with ever-so-slightly improved specifications all around plus a modified body with no sparkly back panel. One rumor suggested that a brand new Nexus 5 would be shown off a MWC 2013 (which we’ll be at with bells on one way or another), while another rumor with a bit more realistic an outlook suggested they’d show a new Nexus at Google I/O 2013 later this Summer.

“Our domestic Pyeongtaek manufacturing plant has been producing the Nexus 4 without a hitch. There is no problem in supplying. [Nexus 5 rumors] are unfounded. The Nexus 4 by LG is significant in that it’s becoming more successful than the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and [Mobile World Congress 2013 products] have not been finalized.” – LG Electronics Official (roughly translated)

LG today has spoken to the publication known as Chosun Biz, confirming that they’re still very much invested in the Nexus 4 in its current state, projecting production well into the future for this extremely hot-selling beast. For those of you that are unaware, this machine has sold so well that the online Google Play store had to push shipments back several weeks back in the later weeks of 2012, only now coming up to speed with availability across the USA and Europe. Rest assured, Nexus 4 owners, your device will be the Google hero for many moons.

Huawei Could Unveil A 7.7mm Windows Phone 8 Smartphone At MWC 2013

huawei ascend w1 Huawei Could Unveil A 7.7mm Windows Phone 8 Smartphone At MWC 2013Just the other day Huawei revealed that they would be launching an 8-core chipset, following in Samsung’s footsteps when the South Korean company announced their plans during CES. At that time we mentioned that Huawei also had a new phone for MWC 2013 and according to the reports, word has it that one of the phones Huawei will be launching is called the W2 and it will be the company’s second Windows Phone 8 handset, and supposedly a higher-end version of the Huawei Ascend W1. Assuming the rumors are accurate, the Ascend W2 will be a 7.7mm phone which compared to Android seems rather thick, but at 7.7mm it will make it the slimmest Windows Phone handset to date.

Other alleged specs of the Ascend W2 include a 4.5” HD display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 2,800mAh battery and is expected to retail for $515, making it cheaper than both the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC Windows Phone 8X. If this is true and the phone does arrive stateside, it looks like those who find the Nokia Lumia 920 a tad chunky for their tastes and are in the market for something slimmer and cheaper, Huawei could be the answer to their problem. Either way we’ll be live at MWC 2013 which will be taking place towards the end of February, so be sure to check back with us then to see if the rumors pan out.

Huawei tips 8-core processor and new P-series phone for MWC 2013

This week the folks at Huawei have revealed – or teased, really – a new phone that’ll be coming out to the public at Mobile World Congress 2013. This event is next month while the tip here comes from CES and an interview with Engadget where the CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group Richard Yu made it plain that not only will Huawei be bringing a new next-generation super-thin P-series 2 smartphone to the market with a reveal at Mobile World Congress 2013 (next month – we’ll be there), they’ll also be bringing their very own octa-core (that’s 8 CPU cores, mind you) processor to the market in the second half of the year.

P10904821

This announcement has an 8-core Cortex A15 bit of action being prepared for the mainstream, or at least China – given Huawei’s push to be inside the USA bit by bit over the past year, we wouldn’t be surprised if they made an effort to release a phone or tablet with the SoC inside the states by the end of the 12 month period. This release will join the likes of Samsung who will be bringing their own 8-core design to the market this year as well – how it’ll compare to NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 is yet to be seen, 72 GPU cores and all.

Huawei’s next-generation smartphone has been confirmed by Yu as being thinner than the Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra, that being just 6.45mm. For comparison purposes, the iPhone 5 is 7.6mm thin and the Samsung Galaxy S III is 8.6mm. With a smartphone that thin, the biggest issue you’re going to have are your nerves, thinking about how you’re in more danger of busting it with your fingers than with a drop to the cement.

Have no fear, though, the body of this machine will be “metallic” – whether or not that means it’ll be metal in this case is still up for debate. We’ll be seeing more of Huawei at Mobile World Congress 2013 without a doubt. Join us starting on in our growing [MWC 2013 tag portal] and Barcelona will be delivered straight to you!

Goodbye CES 2013: It’s been fun!

This year at CES 2013 we took on the full gamut, everything from ultra HD televisions to smartphone cases, and all things good in-between. While we’ll be presenting several CES wrap-up posts for you over the next few days so you can get caught up in a collection of nutshells, we’d like to take the opportunity here to say thank you to all of the individuals, companies, and institutions that helped us make it easy to present all the newest innovations to you, the readers.

27400089_pbbxvH

What we’ve seen this week is a wide variety of devices, services, and events that collectively give us a basic idea of what we’ll be seeing from developers, manufacturers, and creators of all kinds over the coming set of months. CES 2013 has presented the usual undeniably intense next-generation in televisions, too massive to use, more accessories than we’ll ever have time to use, and whispers of this Spring and Summer’s mobile device offerings.

NOTE: We brought more people than the photo above suggests, but planes take off early, and it’s rare you get a minute to take a photo with the SlashGear truck!

ces_2013

Interestingly enough, we only saw a few devices in the mobile market that we’d not seen before. Groups like NVIDIA and Lenovo presented smart mobile devices while Samsung, LG, Nokia, and Motorola all but abstained from the “CES reveal” method. Instead they stuck to their refrigerators, software upgrades, and re-commitments to the devices they’ve already got out.

What we’re expecting from the companies that did not present (only represented) is either a big showing at Mobile World Congress (next month) or their own device reveals spattered throughout the coming weeks. We shall see soon enough!

So for now you’ll want to head to our massive CES portal for everything CES 2013 and stay tuned to SlashGear for a set of wrap-up posts you wont want to miss!

Huawei To Release Its Own 8-Core Chipset In Second Half Of 2013

huawei ascend p2 06 640x426 Huawei To Release Its Own 8 Core Chipset In Second Half Of 2013A couple of days ago, Samsung announced their own 8-core Exynos processor and it looks like Chinese manufacturer Huawei does not want to be left out. In an interview with the folks at Engadget, Huawei’s Consumer Business Group’s CEO Richard Yu revealed that the company would be launching their own 8-core processor which just like Samsung’s, will be based on the Cortex-A15 design. The chipset will be released in the second half of 2013 although the name of Huawei’s model is unknown at the moment, but Engadget has speculated it could be called the K3V3 and could be manufactured by none other than TSMC. Will it perform just as good, if not better than Samsung’s own 8-core Exynos processor? We guess we will have to wait for benchmarks to find out.

Another interesting tidbit revealed during the interview was the fact that come MWC 2013 which will be taking place next month, Huawei will also be taking the wraps off a new smartphone from the P series lineup. This Huawei device is said to feature a body thinner than the Alcatel Idol One Touch Ultra which supposedly is the world’s thinnest smartphone at the moment. Apart from the phone featuring a metallic body, not much else is known at the moment so be sure to check back with us during MWC for the details.

Huawei’s Richard Yu confirms 8-core chip for 2H 2013, teases super slim P series phone for MWC

Huawei's Richard Yu confirms 8core chip for 2H 2013, teases super slim P series phone for MWC

We never thought our day could get any better after Huawei’s Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu became available again for our CES stage interview (there was originally a “last minute urgent conflict”), but our man was also kind enough to share a couple more scoops with us. First of all, Huawei will be joining Samsung at the octa-core Cortex-A15 party in the second half of this year, and given what Yu’s told us earlier this week, our guess is that this will either be the HiSilicon K3V3 or a sister chipset, again manufactured by TSMC.

The second scoop of the day was delivered fresh off the stage after the interview. Yu told us exclusively that at MWC next month, Huawei will be unveiling a super slim follow-up to the current P series Android phones. We asked if it’ll be even thinner than 6.45mm (the thickness of the Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra announced at CES), and Yu said yes. The exec added that the new phone will have a beautiful metallic body as well. Exciting times, right?

HTC M7 specifications leak with hint of new Sense

This week one of the biggest points of interest in the leaked or otherwise tipped or rumored smartphone department has been the HTC M7, and today we’ve got a batch of new details for you straight from the anonymous barn. This machine is set to be working with an “all black design”, it’s being said today by a source speaking with HTC Source, and will be coming with a new version of HTC Sense that’s both clean and simple – not generally what Sense is all about (so to speak). This device will still not likely be appearing until at least after next week as next week is CES 2013, but you never know!

htc-580x435

This machine is being tipped as having a lovely 4.7-inch 1080p display, a fabulous Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked in at 1.7GHz, and a 13 megapixel camera on the back. The big deal with this phone is not that it’s got the most gigantic display nor the most powerful processor though, but that it may be coming without capacitive buttons under the display. This would put it in with the rumors for a similar device coming from Samsung this year in the Galaxy S IV.

At the moment, HTC is still working with their HTC One family of devices, a lower-powered HTC One device appearing just today on Cricket Wireless. The M7 is set to work with 2GB of RAM and a set of specifications inside and out that would suggest that it’s set for the top of the heap, on the other hand, and very possibly headed to more than one carrier all at once.

Stick around SlashGear to see exactly what this new device is going to bring to the HTC family of devices for Android in our HTC tag, and don’t for get CES and MWC! Hit the CES 2013 tag portal first to follow SlashGear first, starting Sunday (or today if you like), then hit up the MWC 2013 tag right afterward to follow us to Barcelona!

First Tizen Device Gets MWC 2013 Debut

samsung logo First Tizen Device Gets MWC 2013 DebutWe are gearing ourselves up for CES 2013 which is happening in slightly more than a week’s time, and there are tons of embargoes for us to finish up by then. Still, this does not mean that we do not cast our eye on the future – in fact, we do look forward to MWC 2013 that is happening a month after CES, where we will be off to Barcelona, Spain, to check out all that is happening in that part of the world as we intend to bring you the latest developments where smartphones are concerned as well. Word has it that Samsung has been hard at work with Intel on developing the Tizen platform, where the South Korean manufacturer is looking to merge their own bada platform with Tizen.

Yomiuri Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, did report that NTT Docomo, Japan’s largest carrier, will put up its first Tizen device ever as part of their product portfolio after it is launched by Samsung at Mobile World Congress 2013. We cannot wait – can you?
