Nokia N9 Users Petition Nokia For Updates And Bug Fixes

Nokia N9 Users Petition Nokia For Updates And Bug FixesThe Nokia N9 was the Finnish company’s first and last MeeGo handset, and so far based on the reviews we’ve come across, many have good things to say about it. So far N9 owners appear to be pretty pleased with their purchase, but the longer they use their device, they are starting to notice more bugs appearing. Unfortunately despite Nokia promising to provide support until 2015, it seems that nothing has been done to address these bugs, some of which causes battery levels to suddenly drop, missing core features in apps, as well as certain apps that crashes on random.

Nokia N9 owners have since launched a petition, asking Nokia to provide them with the support they promised, and to not neglect them despite the focus currently being on Windows Phone. In fact it seems that the petition is merely asking for updates and bug fixes and nothing more, an issue which we assume Nokia should be able to address swiftly if they chose to. At this time of posting there are 362 signatures so if you’d like to get in on the action, head on over to Change.org and sign the petition yourself.

Jolla won't officially support Sailfish on the Nokia N9, suggests the community does

Nokia N9 champions may be looking hopefully at Sailfish to revive their beloved MeeGo, but Jolla has reigned in those expectations by saying it won’t be officially supporting the device. Although the company won’t be responsible for updates or providing technical help, it claims there’s nothing but a voided warranty stopping the community from porting Sailfish to the abandoned handset. So, N9 owners, it’s up to you — if you want the MeeGo-based OS on your phone, you’ll need to do a bit of work for it.

Nokia and JBL’s PlayUp NFC-equipped Bluetooth speaker wants to pair up with your Lumia

Nokia and JBL's PlayUp NFCequipped Bluetooth speaker wants to pair up with your Lumia

Nokia may have partnered with Monster for its last batch of Lumia-focused audio wares, but now JBL is also in on the deal. Say hello to first product from Nokia and JBL, the successor to the Play 360 portable speaker, dubbed PlayUp. The noiseybox is packed with Bluetooth and NFC, and as for the design, it’s made to complement “current and future Lumia smartphones.” Like the Play 360, the PlayUp is a cylindrical, top-shooting speaker with physical volume controls, a large power button near the bottom and a 3.5mm jack for plugging in PMPs. The PlayUp weighs 760g and it measures in at 118 x 118 x 128mm — a fair bit chunkier that the 360 (110 x 110 x 124mm and 514g). Despite the heft, the PlayUp’s battery is rated for 10 hours of use, which is disappointingly just under half of the 360’s replaceable cell. Charging gets handled via micro-USB and — thankfully — a wall adapter is included.

Naturally, the notable change is JBL’s baked-in audio expertise. The unit can pump out a healthy 89dB of volume (aided by a bass port), which isn’t shabby, but still shy of the ear-ringing 120dB the $99 UE Mobile BoomBox can produce. There’s no word on whether tow units can pair wireless stereo like its elder, or what version of Bluetooth is packed inside, but we’ll be sure to let you know once we find out. Nokia also plans to release an app for the device to allow for remote control.

Given that Nokia has knack for consistency across its products, it’s likely that the white, black, cyan and bright yellow color choices will match up with the WP 8-loaded Lumias at their September 5th unveiling. The PlayUp will be available for €149 (about $186) before the year is out, which includes a travel pouch and a 3.5mm audio cable. In the meantime, hit the source link for more details.

NFC-enabled Android and Nokia phones vulnerable to hijacking

Galaxy NexusThought NFC is a relatively unused feature in this side of the world, there is no reason for it to be left as it is. As proven by a smartphone hacker named Charlie Miller. The hacker recently found a way to take advantage of the NFC capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nokia’s N9. By simply using an NFC tag, the hacker said he was capable of making your smartphone run its web browser and load a website (containing malicious code or commands) – all he had to do was place the chip in close proximity to the phone. Can you imagine the repercussions if these chips were widely available for people to get their hands on. Crowded places like restaurants, public transportation systems and shopping malls could all turn into hijacking grounds for smartphones.

The chip works by taking advantage of the fact that smartphones don’t require any authorizations or confirmations from the users when receiving commands over NFC. In fact, there is no way for users to selectively approve or reject a specific transfer initiated – which makes preventing this hack quite difficult. It’s up to Google to close these vulnerabilities in Android and as for the N9, I guess it’s in the hands of the developer community to fix MeeGo. Let’s hope these problems are fixed before NFC becomes more popular here.

Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean ported onto a Nokia N9

While the Nokia N9 might be Nokia’s first and last efforts at a MeeGo device, it certainly does not meant that developers for the handset have given up entirely as well. As you can see in the photo above, one particular developer has uploaded the picture onto his Twitter account, clearly showing what appears to be Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean running on the N9. We can’t tell if this is for real or if it is a fake, but if it is real, this is most definitely good news for N9 users who might be looking to give their device a new lease on life, much like how the HP TouchPad saw a recent surge in popularity due to its ability to run Android ROMs on it. It’s also hard to tell how far along this port is, but we will be sure to keep an eye out for more news regarding its status and availability, so stay tuned!

Jolla startup receives MeeGo patents, nod of encouragement from Nokia

We already know that the MeeGo splinter group, Jolla, is following a slightly different path to what we’ve known and loved on the N9, but don’t fear: there’s every chance that the smartest features from the original OS will be retained, not least because Nokia has just given the startup a gift-wrapped bundle of patents. Jolla founder Jussi Hurmola mentioned the altruistic gesture in an interview with ItViikko, and although he didn’t specify exactly which patents have been transferred, his warm words towards his former employer — with whom he said he enjoyed a “good and open relationship” — give us a strong hint as to their value.

Update: We’ve seen comments on a number of forums saying that ItViiko‘s mention of the patents is unconfirmed speculation, so we’re reaching out to Nokia for further clarification.

Update: Apologies all. Turns out the source article wasn’t quite accurate in its description of patents being given to departing employees. Nokia tells us it’s supporting Jolla through an incubator program called Bridge, but it has not actually given over patents to any of the Bridge startups.

Key MeeGo team members leave Nokia, N9 owners swipe away a few tears

Nokia N9 white

This week will be remembered as a volatile one if you’re a MeeGo fan. Just hours after Nokia posted the PR 1.3 update for N9 owners, the company’s MeeGo development lead Sotiris Makyrgiannis and other team members have confirmed that they’re leaving for greener pastures. The split appears to be an amicable one, with the crew largely going to CloudBerryTec to write mobile apps (including for MeeGo) and consult on software even as they share fond memories. What’s left is a lot of doubt over the fate of the swipe-driven OS itself. Nokia promised years of support for the OS as a side project following the big leap to Windows Phone, but it also hadn’t mentioned the possibility of important staff departures, either. We’ve reached out to the company for a fuller answer — if it turns out that MeeGo development is winding down, the staff shift could be the end to completely in-house OS creation at a company that was once defined by its custom platforms.
