Chevrolet shows off 2014 Corvette all-digital instrument panel

Before the 2014 Corvette C7 was officially announced earlier this week, we got a very short glimpse of the all-digital instrument panel back in November, thanks to a teaser trailer about the new car. From just the split-second look that we had, we could tell that the gauge cluster was going to be fantastic, and it looks like that’s actually very true.

Autoblog ended up getting a much closer look at the new instrument panel in the 2014 Corvette at NAIAS 2013, and it’s about as stunning as you’d expect. You’re essentially looking at an 8-inch “high-resolution” display that’s fully reconfigurable, and it has three modes that you can scroll through.

Sport Mode features one large, central tachometer, and you can configure it to show different types of information, like G-forces, tire pressure, oil pressure, etc. Race Mode gives you a bar graph tachometer that’s meant for it to be easily read out of the corner of your eye to make sure that drivers keep their eyes on the racetrack. Touring Mode allows drivers to push the tachometer off to the side a bit and make room for infotainment information or navigation information.

Off to the sides of the 8-inch display are regular instrument clusters. Off to the left is the speedometer, which maxes out at 200mph, and then off the right side, is what appears to be the fuel gauge and the oil pressure gauge, both of which are slightly blocked by the steering wheel, so we’re not 100% sure, but this photo from Car and Driver gives an unobstructed view of the instrument panel.

Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray comes with 8-inch customizable instrument cluster

Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray gets new, reconfigurable instrument cluster video

One of the prettiest sights at this year’s North American International Auto Show was the Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray, a bright red beauty that’s just as attractive inside thanks to a brand new reconfigurable instrument cluster. According to Autoblog, behind the steering wheel is an eight-inch high resolution screen with one of three different layouts: sport, touring and race. Sport mode places the tachometer in the center, touring slips it to the side to make room for info like navigation directions and race displays the tach in a bold and colorful ascending bar graph. The modes can be configured to show all kinds of details, from G-force numbers to lap times. Of course, we’ve seen digital displays of this sort before, but Chevy’s version is quite the visual treat all the same. If you’re dying to get a look at the cluster for yourself, head over to the source for the video.

Cadillac ELR unveiled: A Volt for the luxury set (updated with pictures)

Cadillac ELR unveiled A Volt for the luxury set updated with pictures

It’s taken a good, long while for the Cadillac Converj concept to break cover as a production machine, but at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the car has finally shrugged off its camouflage. You can think of this as the Chevy Volt’s better-mannered big-brother if you like, as this machine relies on the same Extended Range Electric Vehicle platform as its predecessor. That is, it has the same basic hybrid structure as the Volt that allows it to run as a pure EV for up to 35 miles before switching over to a more traditional parallel hybrid mode, burning gasoline for a maximum range of over 300 miles. But, that’s not to say this is a Volt that’s just made a trip to the tailor for a better-fitting suit — there’s a bit more to it than that. Join us after the break for the details.

Tesla to open 25 new stores in 2013

Tesla Motors is making waves, and the company is looking to have a big year during 2013. They already have over 20 stores in North America, with more than 30 located overseas. 13 of them were opened up in 2012 alone, but the company plans to open up even more this year. Tesla confirmed at the North American International Auto Show this week that they plan on opening 25 stores in 2013.

Vice president of sales for Tesla, George Blankenship, confirmed plans for 25 new retail locations opening throughout 2013, with half of them opening up outside the US. One of those stores will include the company’s first location in China, which is due to open sometime in the spring, so just a few months from now.

The company also stated that they’re still committed to blanketing the US with Supercharger charging stations for Tesla vehicles. Only eight of them are fully operational now, and most of them are on the west coast, but Tesla plans to also cover the east cost in the coming years. They also plan to eventually open up charging stations in the middle of the US, as well, which will allow Tesla owners to drive across the US without using a drop of gas or spending any money, since using the chargers will be free for Tesla vehicle owners.

Tesla announced back in November that they expect its Supercharger network to cover the entire United States by the end of 2013. We’re not sure exactly how many charging stations they plan to have opened in order to consider it the “entire United States”, but we’re guessing it means you’ll be able to drive anywhere without running out of juice.

Acura unveils updated NSX concept, has one V6 and three electric motors (eyes-on)

Acura unveils updated NSX concept, three electric motors onboard eyeson

Acura chose last year’s NAIAS to unveil the reborn NSX, heir to an epic throne of motorsports lineage. But, it was lacking a few things — most notably an interior. This year, Honda’s superlative brand is showing off a new generation of concept for the car that is still, sadly, at least two years away from production. As before it’s powered by the company’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, a system that’s spun most forcefully by a mid-mounted V6, helped by three electric motors. One is mounted to the V6 to provide a hybrid setup, the other two slung between the front wheels to give those tires up front little spin when needed. The new interior is a typically focused experience, full of leather and carbon fiber. It looks perfectly ready for production, but we’re told it’s just one potential design from a few they’re toying with. No word on how much Acura’s return to the supercar world might cost when it goes into production, but we’re just glad to see this on a definite path to availability.

Tesla to open 25 new stores in 2013, first Chinese location this spring

Getting yourself into a new Tesla is going to get a little easier in 2013. The company opened 13 stores in 2012, but this year has designs to double that. On the show floor of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, George Blankenship, VP of sales, confirmed a plan that will see 25 new retail locations opening throughout 2013, with half of those in the US and the other half abroad. This includes the company’s first location in China, which is due to open its doors in the spring.

The company also re-committed to covering the US with Supercharger charging stations. Only eight are operational now, most on the west coast, but the company plans to cover both coasts in the coming years and then, eventually, connect the two so that you can drive from Boston to LA without burning a drop of fuel — and without spending a dime, since use of the chargers will be free for Tesla owners. No firm details on when the company’s $30k entry-level machine will be launching, but we were at least told it’s still at least a few years out

2015 Acura NSX concept revealed at NAIAS 2013

Today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, Honda officially unveiled the 2015 Acura NSX. It’s the company’s second try at an NSX concept, after they revealed the 2012 NSX concept at last year’s show. This new model looks relatively the same overall, with just a few minor changes coming in 2015.

2015-acura-nsx

The 2015 NSX Concept maintains its low and wide stance that we saw last year, and the car is highlighted by clean, modern, smooth, and simple surfacing, with edgy details that communicate a supercar feel and attitude. The overall shape reminds us of Audi’s own R8 supercar, with the slanted rear that goes all the way back to the tail.

Acura NSX production ended in 2005, and it’s seen a long history that goes back to 1990, when the first-year NSX was released. The 2015 model will feature a mid-mounted V6 engine with a seven-speed manual transmission. The car will also feature three electric motors that will work together to help drive all four wheels, and to assist with acceleration and braking.

This “Sports Hybrid AWD system” is expected to deliver V8 performance with “better-than-four-cylinder” fuel economy. Indeed, a three-motor, mid-engine supercar sounds like the ideal machine for a brand attempting to distinguish itself as a luxury and performance company without waste or excess. As far as price goes, there’s no set cost yet, but Acura says it will cost more than the Nissan GT-R, which already starts shy of $100,000.

Nissan knocks $6,400 off Leaf sticker price, sells S model for $28,800

Nissan knocks $6,400 off Leaf sticker price, sells S model for $28,800

That lower-cost Nissan Leaf we heard about? It just got a sticker price. Savvy car buyers will be able to kick off their haggling at $28,800, the Leaf S’ MSRP. Don’t expect the price war to last long though — dealers will waste no time leveraging relevant tax credits, which in California, can dip the car’s price as low as $18,800. The price reduction hits the entire line, too — pricing the Leaf SV and SL at $31,820 and $34,840, respectfully. Nissan attributes the savings to local construction, dodging foreign currency fluctuations by building the vehicles in its existing Tennessee facilities. The move puts the Leaf a little closer to competing with its gas-guzzling cousins, and goes a long way to placate EV buyers put off by the car’s 2012 price hike. Still too pricy? Don’t worry — Nissan promises that you can still lease it, too. Read on for the official press release.

Hyundai unveils HCD-14 Genesis concept: suicide doors, gesture and eye controls

Hyundai unveils HCD14 Genesis concept suicide doors, gesture and eye controls

At NAIAS 2013 Hyundai has given an indication of where its “premium vehicles” are headed with its HCD-14 Genesis concept. Sporting a sharp-edged style and suicide doors, the sedan gets even better inside, with a control layout that foregoes the traditional knobs and buttons. According to Hyundai (it wasn’t demonstrated) it includes eye tracking and 3D hand gesture recognition accurate enough to control navigation, infotainment, audio, HVAC, and one’s phone.

The RWD vehicle packs a 5.0-liter Hyundai Tau V8 engine under the hood with optical recognition that verifies its driver before starting. Hyundai stated that there would be two vehicles on the way following this concept’s design, with the second including even more of its advanced tech. Check out the full list in the press release after the break, as well as a good look at the car in our gallery.
