Bloomberg: Intel nearing TV service deals with Time Warner, Viacom and NBC

Bloomberg: Intel nearing TV service deals

It’s a very poorly kept secret that Intel is looking to bust in the pay-TV business. Rumors have been circulating since at least December that the chip giant is working on its own set-top box and hopes to pair it with a “virtual cable” service that offers unbundled channels. Of course, content creators are reticent to give up the lucrative package deals they’ve struck, which require providers to serve up smaller outlets alongside popular ones. But the tides are starting to shift, and many are demanding that these channels be offered à la carte. According to Bloomberg, Intel is getting close to offering such a service and is reportedly closing in on deals with Time Warner, Viacom and NBC that would allow them to offer both live and on-demand content over the internet. Sources are reporting that the broad terms of the deal have been agreed to, and its only a few fine details and some financial terms that need to be finalized. Intel is also allegedly in talks with Disney, CBS and News Corp. Though, those negotiations are in the preliminary stages. If Intel can successfully land deals for CNN, Comedy Central, MTV and other properties owned by its supposed new partners then its TV experiment could stand a legitimate chance at success.

Must See HDTV (March 11th – 17th)

Must See HDTV March 11th 17th

This week is surprisingly 3D heavy, with basketball tournament action on ESPN and a pair of movies (Life of Pi and Rise of the Guardians) on Blu-ray, but a blast from the past has caught our eye. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Australian Grand Prix
Formula 1 is finally back, and for the first time in the US, on NBC Sports. We’ll have to wait and see if their presentation can match or surpass what we’ve been used to from Fox / Speed, but a just-released broadcast schedule that shows every race airing live is a great start.
(March 17th, NBC Sports Network, 1:30AM)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
For its 25th anniversary this pioneering live action / animated combo is coming to Blu-ray. Besides the movie starring Bob Hoskins as toon-hating detective Eddie Valiant, it also packs three restored Roger Rabbit shorts — our nostalgia will not allow us to pass on this one.

NBC websites hacked and compromised with malware

Earlier today, Ronald Prince sent out a tweet stating that NBC.com had been infected with malware and that users should avoid visiting. This prompted others to look into the issue, with HitmanPro and Sucuri both confirming the issue, stating that a trojan and exploit links were present. In light of this, NBC released a simple statement confirming the problem while assuring users that their information hadn’t been compromised.

Visting the website in Chrome would prompt it to block access, warning users of malware that could infect their computer. According to the folks over at HitmanPro, NBC’s main domain was serving visitors with the Java and PDF exploits and infecting with the Citadel trojan. This is the result of the RedKit Exploit Kit.

A little while later, Sucuri chimed in saying that it wasn’t only NBC.com that had be compromised, but also some of its other websites, including that of Jimmy Fallon and Jay Leno. Examples include the website’s Shows, Video, Schedule, Sports News, and Extras sub-pages, where it is reported that malicious iframes are loaded.

According to NBC, this attack has not affected its NBC News Digital, which includes NBCNews.com, where it confirmed the attack. NBC says that it has “identified the problem and [is] working to resolve it.” Visiting the website in Chrome and Firefox no longer returns any warnings, and some are reporting that the compromise was only present for about 15 minutes. Users who believe they were infected are encouraged to download and run a malware removal program.

Comcast grows in Q4, buys the rest of NBCUniversal and rolls out more new DVRs

It’s been a busy day for Comcast, so we’ll catch you up on the key points. First, it announced today that it’s buying the 49 percent of NBCUniversal that it didn’t already own from General Electric in a deal worth about $16.7 billion, plus 30 Rockefeller Plaza and CNBC’s New Jersey headquarters for an additional $1.4 billion. That’s an acceleration of the original schedule, which gave Comcast the option to expand its ownership starting in 2014. In other news, Comcast reported its Q4 earnings, noting that while it still lost around 7,000 cable TV customers in Q4, the total number of video, internet and phone subscribers rose by 503,000 to a total of 51.3 million, up 3 percent from last year.

In other news, Comcast announced expansions in its rollout of the new X1 DVR platform. Already live in areas of Georgia, New Jersey, Boston, Tennessee, San Francisco and Philadelphia, it’s recently launched in Colorado Springs, CO with more promised in the coming months. It also locked down a deal with Fox that covers local broadcasts, cable TV networks and brings a number of the network’s shows to Xfinity streaming apps and services on other platforms. That deal also reveals that Fox will soon add TV Everywhere authenticated streaming to its Fox Now apps, which Comcast customers will be able to access. There’s an earnings call tomorrow where we may find out more details, for now you can look after the break and at the links below for the full press releases.

NBCUniversal dissolves G4, rebrands it as ‘The Esquire Network’

NBC Universal dissolves G4, rebrands it as 'The Esquire Network'

Because nothing quite says “hip brand rejuvenation” like associating your channel with an 80-year-old magazine, NBCUniversal today announced the rebranding and makeover of its G4 television channel into “The Esquire Channel” (as in Esquire magazine). G4 primarily aired video game-centric programming, as well as a vast array of re-runs — something NBC exec Bonnie Hammer doesn’t think was the best idea. “Realistically, guys who are into gaming are not necessarily watching television,” Hammer said, directly refuting the 2012 statistic that 49 percent of US households own a gaming console. “Let’s create a real brand, define a space, understand who we are programming for.” The New York Times reports that The Esquire Channel will be pitched as “an upscale Bravo for men,” though it’s not exactly clear what that means — we’ll find out on April 22 when the network goes live in 62 million homes.

For now, NBC’s got demographics its targeting. Specifically, “a more educated, affluent, sophisticated male viewer,” says the NYT piece. One thing it won’t be? Reality shows with a noun and the word “wars” behind it. “Much of today’s programming targets men in a one-dimensional way … tattoos or pawn shops or storage lockers or axes or hillbillies,” Esquire Channel’s general manager Adam Stotsky said. It doesn’t look like the channel’s beyond reality programming altogether, with its first two shows being a cooking competition named Knife Fight and its other being a celebrity-based travel show named The Getaway. Nor is it beyond the aforementioned re-runs, announcing Parks & Recreation and Party Down as headed for syndication on the forthcoming channel.

The deal will also bring NBC Sports’s Live Extra video player into Yahoo! Sports, so that fans can watch live streams of some of NBC’s biggest events such as the Sunday Night Football and NHL Game of the Week. The content deal also brings the fantasy platform of Yahoo! Yahoo and NBC Sports announce partnership

Yahoo and NBC Sports have announced that they will be teaming up on sports reporting, broadcasts, and news coverage. The two companies have a goal of creating the largest dedicated sports news platforms in the US. According to the announcement, Yahoo Sports will combine its “premium sports news and events coverage” with the NBC Sports Groups digital brand and TV promotion and integration.

Both of the companies will continue to maintain different websites and newsrooms. Yahoo reports that the deal will see Yahoo’s most popular sports content and products integrated into NBC’s online offerings. The two companies are also expecting to run a joint advertising campaign across sites they both operate.

Specific areas that the two companies will collaborate on will include editorial commentary, investigative reporting, and original video programming. They will also team up on live streaming of sporting events and fantasy sports. Yahoo Sports will be the exclusive fantasy game provider of NBC Sports Rotoworld.

The deal between Yahoo and NBC sports is the latest to come under CEO Marissa Meyer’s leadership. Since she took over the CEO position, Yahoo has launched new deals with Samsung that will bring Yahoo Broadcasts Interactivity service to Samsung smart TVs. Yahoo has also signed a deal with CBS Television Distribution to extend the reach of a syndicated newsmagazine called The Insider among other deals.

NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports cut a deal to fuse internet, TV coverage

NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports cut a deal to fuse internet, TV coverage

While Yahoo has had a tumultuous last few years, one unit that has consistently been at the top of the heap is its sports news division. At the same time, NBC Sports has been getting a boost — even without the NHL’s help — ever since Comcast bought NBCUniversal. Apparently between Yahoo’s need to better leverage its media properties and NBC’s free agency after calling it quits with Microsoft the two have found common ground and struck a deal. Although both websites will continue to operate independently, expect multi-platform crossover between TV and internet, cross-promotion with links to NBC Sports Live Extra streams from within Yahoo, new made-for-the-internet video shows combining their assets and Yahoo’s fantasy sports will be the exclusive game for NBC’s Rotoworld site. Check after the break for the press release and a heads up on why even non-sports fans that pay for TV may need to keep an eye on this move.

Anonymous celebrates Guy Fawkes Day with reported PayPal hack [UPDATE]

In case you don’t remember, today is Guy Fawkes Day. Anonymous is trying to make sure that you remember the fifth of November, taking to Twitter today to announce that it has hacked PayPal and made off with nearly 28,000 passwords. According to The Next Web, Anonymous posted these passwords (along with usernames and telephone numbers in some cases) to Private Paste, though at the time of this writing the page linked to by the AnonymousPress Twitter account has been taken down. [UPDATE: PayPal responds below.]

PayPal says that it is currently investigating the claims of a breach, but so far the company hasn’t found any evidence that it has been hacked. SEE: quote below. That isn’t all Anonymous has been up to though, as the BBC reports that Symantec is looking into claims that it has been hacked as well. Over the weekend, sites belonging to NBC, Lady Gaga, and the Australian government were compromised in an apparent protest for Guy Fawkes Day.

“It appears that the exploit was not directed at PayPal after all, it was directed at a company called ZPanel. The original story that started this and was retweeted by some of the Anonymous Twitter handles has now been updated.” – PayPal Spokesperson

Guy Fawkes, who attempted to blow up the House of Lords in an effort to kill King James I back in 1605, has become something of a legend within Anonymous, thanks to 2005′s V for Vendetta. “Members” of the group often wear Guy Fawkes masks that were used in the movie when they appear publicly, and indeed, a few of the websites displayed the famous Gunpowder Treason rhyme after being compromised. “Remember, remember the fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot,” the rhyme commands. “I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot.”

A number of the sites that were reportedly compromised in this Guy Fawkes protest are now back to normal, but you can bet that Anonymous is pleased with the attention it has received this fifth of November. Even though PayPal hasn’t confirmed that it was hacked, it might not be a bad idea to switch up your password if you happen to be a customer. Knowing Anonymous, this won’t be the last we hear of the hacktivist group today, so keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more details.
