NEC Terrain leak shows QWERTY smartphone headed for AT&T

The ever-faithful @evleaks has dropped a new image, this time of a cell phone that harkens back to days-gone-by when cell phones had scrunched up keyboards in a candy-bar design. The NEC Terrain is said to be headed for AT&T and has a design that is distinctly old-school Blackberry, something that might appeal to some users but is mostly aged.

NEC-whatlarge

Even if you can get past the design, there doesn’t seem to be much of anything else that immediately catches attention, although to be fair not much has been said about the device. There’s what appears to be a 3.5-inch display, give or take a bit, which could probably be a full 4-inches if it wasn’t for the giant AT&T logo at the bottom of the panel. The keyboard is your standard QWERTY offering, and looks small enough to jam multiple buttons at once.

Although it wasn’t mentioned, by the looks of things in the image, this NEC handset runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. Given the product-shot style of the image, we’ll probably be seeing this device in an announcement in the near future. There’s no word on the kind of hardware its running, nor when we can expect to see it on shelves and how much it will cost. The only tidbit given was that it’ll be offered through AT&T.

Of course, Eric Schmidt of all people is a Blackberry user, and the sum total of his reason is because he likes the keyboard. If one of Google’s biggest names is still rocking a Blackberry in an environment likely overrun with Android devices, perhaps there is still a pocket of businessmen out there looking for an old-school Blackberry-wannabe device running the more popular Android operating system. In which case, godspeed NEC.

NEC Terrain for AT&T spied in leaked press photos, packs a QWERTY keyboard

NEC Terrain for AT&T spied in leaked press photos, packs a QWERTY keyboard

Memory of a time where an NEC phone graced US shores escapes us, but the prolific — and often accurate — @evleaks has tweeted a press shot that signals a handset from the Japanese firm might soon arrive stateside. Emblazoned with AT&T’s logo and reportedly dubbed the NEC Terrain, the Android-toting smartphone shares its front real estate with a screen, a camera and a QWERTY keyboard. No other details were spilled with the image, but with a name like Terrain and what looks like a rubberized border, we wouldn’t be surprised if it could withstand a fair amount of rough and tumble.

Lenovo reportedly in talks to buy NEC’s mobile phone business

It seems Lenovo isn’t giving up on it’s pursuit to buy out a mobile phone company. First it was BlackBerry, which may or may not be fizzling, but this time around it’s reported that Lenovo is in talks to acquire NEC’s mobile phone business. It’s said that NEC is looking to change some things around with its mobile unit, and selling it to Lenovo might be an option.

According to Reuters, several sources familiar with the Lenovo/NEC discussion said that NEC is looking to sell off its mobile phone unit, and they’ve been in several talks with Lenovo to make that happen. However, it’s also said that NEC is talking with other Japanese companies to sell their mobile phone business to.

This comes after multiple reports have surfaced claiming that Lenovo is considering acquiring BlackBarry. Lenovo’s CFO Yang Yuanqing even said himself that a BlackBerry acquisition “could possibly make sense.” However, those rumors have somewhat died down lately, and we haven’t heard much about it since.

If the name “NEC” sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because you bought one of their optical drives from Newegg or Tiger Direct for your custom-built PC, but the company also makes mobile phones. However, they haven’t been making many strides in the mobile phone market, which is probably why they’re looking to sell it off to a company who could utilize it better.

NEC looking to hawk mobile division to PC partner Lenovo, says Bloomberg

NEC looking to hawk mobile division to Lenovo, says Bloomberg

Though we don’t get to see its smartphone wares too often stateside or in Europe, NEC has always said its mobile division was a big part of its business. Now it looks to be trying to fob that arm off to PC venture partner Lenovo, according to unnamed Bloomberg sources. The Japanese company is also said to be eying potential domestic buyers if that doesn’t pan out, and Reuters recently reported that it’s selling retail subsidiary NEC Mobiling to the tune of $850 million. The move is said to be in the works to bolster profitability after two straight years of smartphone operation losses and 10,000 layoffs, but as always, such unattributed material needs to be digested with beaucoup salt.

Lenovo Reportedly Looking To Buy NEC’s Mobile Phone Business

Lenovo Reportedly Looking To Buy NECs Mobile Phone BusinessWhen it comes to buying smartphones, brands like Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and HTC come to mind. While other manufacturers like Lenovo have smartphones of their own, they do not have the same amount of clout other manufacturers do, but perhaps that might change in the future should Lenovo combine forces with NEC. According a report from Nikkei and confirmed by sources from Reuters, Lenovo is reportedly looking to buy the mobile phone division from NEC. Apparently NEC has not been doing too well in the mobile phone business and are looking to cut their losses.

Considering that both Lenovo and NEC are in a joint venture to sell PCs in Japan, we wouldn’t be surprised if NEC made the offer to Lenovo first, although the report did state that NEC is still open to other potential buyers. NEC’s mobile phone business is currently a joint venture with Casio, but NEC owns a 70% stake in the business, and together both companies own about 6% of the Japanese market. NEC would definitely not be the first Japanese company to pull out of the mobile phone business, as back in 2012 Panasonic announced they would be withdrawing from Europe only after a year of attempting to enter the market.
