Verizon's Viewdini appears on iOS: works on any network, hunts video from 11 sources

The Viewdini streaming metasearch service launched a few months ago for Verizon’s 4G LTE-laden Android hardware, and now it’s finally available on iDevices. While the droid app is exclusive to those with a 4G plan on Big Red’s network, anything running iOS 4.3 and up can now make use of Viewdini, independently of carrier ties. As the screenshots above show, you’re also good to go on 3G, although you better watch that data allowance to avoid any nasty surprises. Interestingly, the iOS version currently only digs through the catalogues of 11 content providers compared with 18 on the Android version, but you’re still getting access to various big names like ABC, Crackle, Hulu Plus, Netflix and Verizon’s own video service. More providers should be added to the list soon, and if you’d like to give Viewdini a try, it’s available at the App Store now.

Netflix Just for Kids launches on Xbox 360

Parents with small children who enjoy watching Netflix on the Xbox 360 will be glad to hear that the Xbox 360 Netflix app has been given a nice new feature. Netflix has announced that the Just for Kids channel has landed on the Xbox 360. The same feature came to the PS3 back in March of 2012.

The problem with turning kids loose on Netflix without limiting them to the Just for Kids section is that some films that have inappropriate content despite having innocent sounding names. With the new Just for Kids section now available on the Xbox 360, parents can rest assured that their children can choose any streaming items in the section, and the content is safe for kids to watch.

Just as on other platforms, the Just for Kids section on Xbox 360 has rows of TV shows and movies organized in a method that is easy for kids to understand. There are genres for things such as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs, and girl power. Our pal SpongeBob SquarePants even gets his own section as does Nickelodeon’s iCarly and others.

The channel also provides a personalized experience based on what the kids watch. That means if, for instance, your daughter watches movies about horses, more content featuring horses will be shown. With the Just for Kids section coming to the Xbox 360, it’s now available on all major consoles, PCs, Macs, Apple TV, and some smart TVs and Blu-ray players. Netflix notes that this year the Just for Kids section will come the other devices, including tablets.

‘Just for Kids’ now available on the Xbox 360: Go, Netflix, Go!

'Just for Kids' now available on Xbox 360 Go, Netflix, Go!

Late last year, Netflix kicked off its plans to specifically cater the young crowd with its ‘Just for Kids’ entertainment section — which, at that point, was nothing but a mere experiment. Still, the toons-filled project quickly found success amongst subscribers, and shortly thereafter it had made its way onto other platforms like the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. Today, the Xbox 360’s the latest gaming system to join the fun, as Netflix’s announced the kids-only section is now available on Microsoft’s popular console. Obviously you’ll need both a Netflix and Xbox Live account prior to entering the hub and start streaming some Go, Diego, Go! — otherwise all that’s left to do is download the updated app before you (or your kids) can check it out.

Netflix ‘Just for Kids’ on the Xbox 360 debuts

I remember back in the day when I first laid my eyes on a color TV, boy was it quite a stark contrast compared to the communal black and white TV set! Even though there were just two channels to choose from, I never really complained that there was nothing to watch on TV. Fast forward to today, and many people gripe and complain about how there is “nothing to watch” on TV despite surfing through hundreds of TV channels in the process. Netflix has offered ‘Just for Kids’ on the Xbox 360, where this user interface makes it easier and more intuitive for your little ones to enjoy their favorite shows without bugging you.

Basically, Just For Kids will be a character-centric interface, allowing even toddlers to be able to navigate to watch what they fancy, ranging from Dora The Explorer to the amazing talking sponge, Spongebob Squarepants. Glad to see this port of Just For Kids appear on the Xbox 360 after it has already made an appearance on the Nintendo Wii, PS3 and Apple TV. It is a no brainer to give this a go if you are a Netflix subscriber, own an Xbox 360 and have the pitter patter of feet around the home.

Netflix testing ‘Max’ assistant on some PS3 users to improve movie recommendations

Netflix testing 'Max' assistant on some PS3 users to improve movie recommendations

It’s not available to all, but if you’re running the latest version (2.08) of the Netflix app on your PlayStation 3 you may see a prompt for a new item called Netflix Max, spotted by one of our readers. Described by a PR rep we contacted as a “new user experience” the company is testing, the assistant talks to users directly and asks them to rate a few movies on the spot before providing new suggestions. The Noisecast was among the first to try out the new experience and even has a few tips on how to get it for yourself, although it didn’t work on our PS3, even after uninstalling and reinstalling the app to get the latest version. The blog mentioned it does more than simply rating movies also, as it sometimes asked users to select movies based on specific criteria, like the starring actors. It can be brought up by pressing the square button on your PS3 controller, although how much you enjoy the gameified experience may vary.

Pulling gems out of a catalog filled with older and lower profile movies is a complaint of many Netflix subscribers though, so any attempt to help is welcome, but we’re not immediately sure this is the way. According to Netflix, it’s waiting to see if the tool leads to “increased interaction” (read: more viewing hours / less likely to cancel, on average) before deciding whether or not to roll the tool out widely, so if you have it and like it, vote with your remotes.

Miramax arrives on Lovefilm to let you relive the golden age of Weinsteins

Miramax arrives on Lovefilm to let you relive the golden age of Weinsteins

Miramax has reached a deal with Lovefilm to get its back-catalog of award-winning films available on-demand in the UK and Germany. It’s an unsurprising move given the company has similar deals in place with Netflix and Hulu to let you watch classics like Pulp Fiction, Clerks and Trainspotting whenever the urge takes you. While there was no official confirmation of a launch window, a cursory check of our own account reveals that some of the titles (including Kill Bill) are already popping up on the instant service.

Netflix ranked most popular but still disappoints

It seems Netflix is suffering from the same kind of problem that most huge monopolistic companies face – even though a lot of people use it, most of them aren’t very satisfied with it. Compared to other streaming video services, Netflix ranks low on the customer satisfaction scale even though it is clear that a growing population of Americans have a Netflix account.

A Consumer Reports survey of 15,000 users found that 81% of those who have used a video streaming service in the last six months have used Netflix. That made it far and away the most popular service, but it was #6 when it comes to customer satisfaction. 69% of Netflix users said they were satisfied, and the others called out things like poor selection of titles and being unable to see Netflix as a viable replacement for cable.

Vudu, surprisingly, garnered a 76% satisfaction rate, giving it the top metric. Apple’s iTunes was close behind at 75%, while Amazon Instant Video took a 74% satisfaction rate. Amazon Prime’s video streaming option and Hulu are both satisfying 70% of their customers. While that is certainly not a happy set of numbers for Netflix, its subscription numbers don’t lie so we doubt it’s losing much sleep over this.

HBO says no to Netflix partnership

NetflixIf you’re waiting to watch TV series like True Blood, Entourage or Game of Thrones on Netflix, you’d better stop holding your breath. On Tuesday, Netflix raised the possibility of teaming up with HBO in a letter to its shareholders. However, before any discussions have even begun – it looks like that won’t be happening anytime soon. HBO announced today that they are in no discussions and have no plans to work with Netflix.

Seeing how HBO’s own streaming service, HBO GO is a direct competitor to Netflix, it was an unlikely partnership in the first place. But I guess one could always hope? It looks like TV viewers who want to stream shows like Girls or The Sopranos will still have to maintain their HBO GO subscription or obtain them in another way. Any of you upset about not having HBO movies and TV shows on Netflix?

Netflix Q2 2012 earnings: 530,000 more US subscribers and a return to profitability

Netflix recently let it drop that its users clocked in more than one billion hours of content-viewing in the month of June alone, although the big question for CEO Reed Hastings is how that relates to the company’s subscriber base. The results are in from its Q2 2012 earnings report, and it’s claiming 27.56 million streaming subscribers worldwide, up from 26 million last quarter. In the US alone that includes 23.94 million customers, after it reported 23.4 million in Q1, while DVD customers dropped by 850k to 9.24 million. While the number of new subscribers wasn’t as high as some had hoped, the good news is the company is finally back in the black, with $889 million in revenue providing $6 million in net income. On the flip side, a plan to launch service in an “additional attractive European market” in Q4 is expected to result in temporary losses, but we’ll find out more about those plans later in Q3.

One other issue that has been resolved is the search for a new Chief Marketing Officer resulting in the hiring of Kelly Bennett, formerly a marketing executive with Warner Bros. This morning Verizon and Redbox began to carefully pull back the cover on their competing offering, and Amazon has also been making significant waves in the space. However in response, Netflix says Amazon and Hulu Plus have yet to gain meaningful traction in relation to its viewing hours, and it expects Redbox Instant to face a “big challenge” to break into the existing top 3. Its current content deal with Epix will lose online exclusivity “shortly” although it will still offer those titles, we’ll see if any of the competition joins in. Their biggest competition however, is expected to come from efforts like Comcast’s new X1 and Sky’s Now TV, while for HBO, the possibility of cooperation is actually raised (again). We’ll see if that happens or if there are any more juicy details revealed on the investor call in a few minutes.

Vizio Co-Star Google TV box up for pre-order

Vizio made a strong case for the reintroduction of Google TV when it announced the Co-Star box last month, offering full Google TV functionality plus OnLive capabilities for a penny under $100. The company has begun to take pre-orders for the Co-Star on its website, and is still offering free shipping for anyone willing to give the box a chance. You’ll get access to the full Chrome web browser, Google TV apps, and streaming games with the optional OnLive controller and subscription.

Naturally, the box will run apps from other services as well. YouTube is onboard, as is the ever important Netflix for all your movie and TV needs, and Amazon Instant Video is along for the ride too. The box plugs into your existing cable or satellite set top box via HDMI, allowing you to overlay Google TV on top of your current feeds so that you can get as much out of your television as possible.

Connectivity for the box includes WiFi b/g/n, and a single USB port for hard drives or other accessories. If you want, you can also stream content from other hardware via DLNA. The Co-Star should be shipping sometime in August, so if the whole package sounds ideal for your home entertainment needs, head on over to Vizio’s store to pre-order.
