Eizo remote displays connect to computers over the LAN

Eizo is a company that has been making high-end displays for computer users for a number of years. The company is particularly well known for its high-end LCDs that are designed for graphic designers and the medical industry. The company has announced a pair of new 17-inch LCD network monitors that have integrated LAN connectivity enabling them to connect to remote PCs.

These monitors need a single wired Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi access to connect to a remote PC providing long-distance audio and video signal transmission. These monitors are specifically designed to control the PC and have USB ports for connecting a mouse and keyboard. The FDS1702NT display also supports touch control of remote computers.

The Wi-Fi connectivity integrated into the displays is 802.11n allowing for high-speed data transmission. The native resolution for the 17-inch screens is 1280 x 1024 and the display is available in two models. The FDS1702N has a brightness rating of 250 cd/m2 while the FDS1702NT has a brightness rating of 190 cd/m2 and touch control capability.

Eizo says that a maximum of six of these remote displays can be connected to a single computer via a local network. The displays also have integrated dual 0.5-watt speakers. The touch enabled monitor uses a resistive touch panel allowing it to be used while wearing gloves or with a stylus. The USB ports on the monitors can also be used to connect printers and external storage devices. Pricing for the displays is unannounced.

Hacking is still a loaded concept for many, often conjuring negative images of corporate espionage, fraudsters and prank-minded script kiddies. PBS’ Off Book wants to remind us that hacking wasn’t always seen this way — and, thanks to modern developments, is mending its reputation. Its latest episode shows that hacking began simply as a desire to advance devices and software beyond their original roles, but was co-opted by a sometimes misunderstanding press that associated the word only with malicious intrusions. Today, hacking has regained more of its original meaning: hackathons, a resurgence of DIY culture and digital protests prove that hacks can improve our gadgets, our security and even our political landscape. We still have a long way to go before we completely escape movie stereotypes, but the mini-documentary may offer food for thought the next time you’re installing a custom ROM or building your own VR helmet.

In an effort to speed up an already contested $20.1 billion merger, Softbank and Sprint have reportedly agreed not to use Huawei network equipment within the US carrier’s existing network. In fact, the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Rogers, recently told The New York Times that the two outfits have pledged to remove Huawei hardware from Clearwire’s network, too. These promises are likely a reaction to Congress’ security concerns, which saw Huawei exiled from America’s first responder network back in October. While Rogers is happy with Softbank and Sprint’s new game plan, this deal is far from done. The two firms still need to make it past the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US, which reviews national security risks connected to business transactions. Until then, Dan Hesse may wanna hold off on any extracurricular activities.

True, D-Link’s AC1200 may better resemble the container keeping your coffee hot at work than a traditional WiFi router, but it remains a rare take on networking design that’s frankly appreciated. We’re glad to report, then, that it’s shipping to stores. The device (seen in the middle) is the more affordable of D-Link’s two 2013-era 802.11ac routers at its $130 street price, keeping costs in check by peaking at at more modest 867Mbps speed with the new standard and 300Mbps on old-fashioned 802.11n. It still dishes out wireless on either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands, offers wired connections to four gigabit Ethernet devices and shares content from drives attached to its lone USB 3.0 port. When devices like the HTC One and Galaxy S 4 are arriving with 802.11ac built-in, we’d say the AC1200 is a timely solution — just don’t pack it with your office lunch.

ZigBee IP spec goes public, offers open IPv6 mesh networking

While ZigBee hasn’t become as ubiquitous in wireless as the likes of Bluetooth or WiFi, it has carved out niches in home automation and low-power gear. The format is about to expand its world a little further now that a more network-savvy spec, ZigBee IP, is officially available for everyone. The upgrade adds IPv6 and tougher security to the open mesh networking formula, letting it more easily join an internet of things where there’s potentially billions of connected devices. The ZigBee Alliance isn’t naming customers at this stage, although it’s quick to note that ZigBee IP was built for smart grid use: don’t be surprised if you first see it behind the scenes, keeping energy use in check.

Google starts a TV white space trial in South Africa to wirelessly link schools

Google has been a strong advocate of white space wireless as democratizing broadband access: its long-range nature can bring people online when the local internet framework isn’t always reliable, if it exists at all. The company is about to illustrate that potential through a new trial in South Africa. A trio of base stations at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town will supply ten nearby primary and secondary schools with internet access to prove that white space access can work without affecting TV signals. To make sure it won’t, Google is picking the safest frequencies from a database and is measuring the results for the sake of both nervous broadcasters and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa. If all goes well, it (and similar efforts from Microsoft) should make a case for full approval of white space use across the country and deliver internet access to remote areas that risk being left by the technological wayside.

During an analyst event today, JetBlue shared some more details about its upcoming in-flight WiFi product. The service, which will be powered by ViaSat’s Exede, has been coined “Fly-Fi,” and the airline plans to begin rolling it out to its aircraft “soon.” JetBlue hasn’t presented a firm timeline, but says “Barring any setbacks during certification, we expect our first Wi-Fi-enabled flight with customers to take to the skies later this year.” That’s perhaps not as soon as you may have liked, but based on a speed demo (comparing Exede, Gogo, Row 44 and Panasonic’s offering), this new and improved solution will be worth the wait.
