Brainwave Sensor Will Validate Log In Credentials Using Only Your Mind

When you consider how easy it is for anyone to look over your shoulder while you’re typing in your password, as secure as you believe it to be, there will always be a way for people to figure it out of they really want to. But it looks like a future of typing in passwords may be a thing of the past thanks to a new project that is using “passthoughts.”

School of Information researchers used a consumer-based headset that had built-in electroencephalogram (EEG) and developed a way for users to authenticate their log in credentials by only using their brain waves. The EEG-equipped device they uses was a Neurosky Mindset, which at only costs $199. The low-cost of the headset are the key here as in the past, using an EEG-equipped headset would not only be more expensive, but they were also invasive. (more…)

Neurowear wants to read your mind, geotag your feelings video

Geotagging your photos? Old hat — Neurowear wants to geotag your mood. The folks that brought animated cat ears to the human race is now using NeuroSky’s brainwave-reading headgear to suss out your emotional state and share it with your friends. We dropped in on the group at Tokyo Game Show to take a look at an early prototype. After strapping a familiar Mindwave mobile headset to this editor’s skull, a companion iPhone app sprung to life, reading off relaxation levels and assigning cartoon faces to the user’s mood. The reading could then be recorded on a map, tagging how the user felt at a given location and time and allowing them to share that information with their friends. Had a great time at a new coffee shop? Now you can prove it, and encourage your social contacts to join you. It’s an interesting idea, but its still a long way from hitting the app store — the demo we were given was only a concept app, and the geotagging portion of the demonstration was simulated. It may be awhile before you can tweet your feelings directly. Need another way to express yourself? Don’t worry — Nerosky is adding a brainwave controlled tail, dubbed Shippo, to its line of cranium controlled animal parts. Check it out (as well as our quick neurotagging demo) after the break.

Necomimi finally arrives in the US

Have you heard of the company NeuroSky before? Well, this is the company behind some mind controlled devices in recent memory, and even more recently, Necomimi is one of NeuroSky’s latest products which was introduced in Japan. Basically, this will target cosplayers who want to wear one pair of those cute looking kitten ears, but what makes the Necomimi special is this – it is a mind controlled toy that ought to be a hit among those who love all things about cosplaying.

First launched on an official basis at Comic-Con in San Diego, the Necomimi is actually a headband which will feature brainwave cat ears that will move according to the user’s moods. It will rely on NeuroSky’s ThinkGear technology, enabling Necomimi to provide folks a chance to express their moods in real time, and through fake cat ears to boot. Well, it would have been nice to see a mentally controlled tail appendage to go along with the pair of ears, but I guess that particular idea will just have to be reserved for sometime down the road.

The Necomimi thought controlled cat ears is not too expensive either to own, considering they retail for just $99.95 a pair via select authorized resellers, retail partners and on www.necomimi.com. First becoming popular within the anime and costume circles in Japan due to a viral Youtube video by Neurowear, audiences have for the longest time being waiting for the US launch.

The unveiling of the Necomimi cat ears took place at Comic-Con booth #305, and fans who have been following the Necomimi product will be able to be one of the first in line to demonstrate and purchase the product. There are three emotional states that the Necomimi cat ears are able to create, resulting in cat-like reactive movements which will depict whether you are relaxed or interested at a particular point during the conversation.

Should something interesting catch your attention during the conversation, the ears will shoot straight up. When you are relaxed, the ears will droop, and when both are highly focused and highly relaxed, or “in the zone”, the ears will start to wiggle back and forth.
