Newegg Takes on Amazon Prime with Newegg Premiere

Back when Amazon Prime first launched I made fun of it and generally thought it was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. In my mind, I would never buy enough items for Amazon to cover the yearly fee to be a member. In practice only a few short months after signing up, I was hooked. I bet there are lots of people out there that feel the same way.

Other retailers online are trying to compete with Amazon Prime, including electronics purveyor Newegg. If you are a computer geek, you probably remember Newegg as the place you went when TigerDirect didn’t have the computer products you wanted back in the day. These days, Newegg sells all sorts of electronics.

Newegg is trying to compete with Amazon Prime with the new Newegg Premier service Beta. The service costs $49.99(USD) per year and will give you free expedited shipping on anything you order. Premier shipping promises to have your items in your hands in two to three days, and discounts on rush shipping. It also includes special deals just for members, no restocking or return shipping fees, and early alerts for sales and events.

Newegg is offering a 30-day trial to see how much you like the service. Sadly, it offers no streaming video or free digital books like Prime.

Newegg Premier Goes Up Against Amazon Prime

Newegg Premier Goes Up Against Amazon Prime

With millions of customers choosing to shop online, there’s tough competition between online retailers to stay one step ahead of each other. Amazon happens to be the largest online retailer, trailed by Newegg in second place, in the U.S. The latter has launched a new program which pits it against Amazon Prime. Newegg Premier, which costs $49 per year, offers free three day shipping, free returns and expedited shipping. One thing it lacks, and where Prime exceeds, is the huge media library that Amazon offers along with Prime.

Digital Storm goes after DIY gaming PCs with its $699 Vanquish (video)

Digital Storm declares DIY gaming PCs dead with its new Vanquish line

Dear rig builder, before you go shopping for your next PSU, Digital Storm would like a word. The company’s new line of Vanquish PCs is aimed at gamers who want the price of a self-build, but without the worry that they’ve mistakenly jammed a 12V ATX cable into a Blu-Ray drive. The base unit offers up an AMD FX-4300 with 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, a Radeon HD 7750 and Windows 7 for $699 — just $38 more than the company claims you could snag those unassembled parts on NewEgg. Alongside the professional build, Digital Storm will provide lifetime in-house tech support and a three-year warranty, so if you’d like to learn more, there’s PR and video after the break.

Gran Turismo 6 Appears On Newegg

Gran Turismo 6 Appears On NeweggIf you are one who absolutely loves the racing simulator Gran Turismo, and have followed the game right from the very beginning of the series, then you might be interested to hear that retail site Newegg.com has already made available a pre-order page for Gran Turismo 6. Of course, even more interesting is the fact that just as soon as the listing went live, it was taken down all too soon, but with the Internet being what it is, and folks never too far away from a Prt Sc key on the keyboard, you can be sure that there are screenshots shared online as “proof” that Newegg actually placed such a pre-order page.

What other information could be gleaned from this quick exercise? Well, it seems that the potential release date for Gran Turismo has been slated for a November 11 release later this year, and of course, we would take this particular date with a grain of salt especially when you consider how Sony has not commented a single thing concerning this leak, but it would not be too far fetched to believe either that Gran Turismo 6’s pre-order listing was removed just as quickly as it was put up with some intervention from the folks over at Sony.

How the "Shopping Cart" Patent Almost Ruined Online Shopping—And How Newegg Beat It

Newegg just took out one of the biggest patent trolls on the web. A troll so pervasive, it threatened to put out a mafioso lawsuit-insurance tax on basically every online retailer on the internet. Here’s how it happened, as told in a great writeup over at Ars Technica. More »

Windows 8 sales have been ‘slow going,’ Microsoft said to be blaming OEMs

Windows 8 sales have been 'slow going,' Microsoft said to be blaming OEMs

We’ve already heard about Windows RT’s “modest” beginning, and now there’s talk full-blown Windows 8 ain’t flying off the shelves either. According to MS aficionado Paul Thurrott and one of his “most trusted sources,” uptake of the new OS isn’t hitting Redmond‘s targets, with the blame being put on OEMs and their “inability to deliver” more inspiring hardware with better availability. Some corroboration of Windows 8’s tricky birth comes from Merle McIntosh, senior VP of product management of NewEgg, who says the online retailer was “prepared for an explosion” at launch, but that sales have “been slow going” to date. However, he says that early sales figures shouldn’t be compared to Windows 7, since that OS arrived to “solve a Vista problem.” He expects Windows 8 to gain traction in Q2 2013 when “pricing normalizes,” which would certainly help to temper any launch frustrations.
