Microsoft Releases A Windows Product Key Updater

This article was written on August 15, 2006 by CyberNet.

Windows Product Key UpdaterThere are a lot of people that have become all too familiar with Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA). Microsoft will of course sell you a legal version of Windows if you are running a pirated copy…and now they aren’t forcing you to reformat your computer to fix the issue.

Once you have purchased a key you can download the Windows Product Key Update Tool. Using it is a piece of cake: run it, enter the new key, and restart the computer. Now if only they made a simple tool to remove WGA instead of having to follow the 20-step process!

Replace the Task Manager with Process Explorer 11!

This article was written on September 05, 2007 by CyberNet.

Windows Process Explorer 11

Process Explorer is one of the must-have apps for any Windows power user. It doesn’t require any installation for you to use it, and it can show you things like which application has a specific file or folder open. Honestly this is something that I’ve always hoped would ship with Windows as an “advanced” mode option, but I’m just grateful that Microsoft has continued to keep this project alive.

Today marked another milestone for the application with the introduction of Process Explorer 11. There’s several improvements for Vista users, and here’s the more complete list:

  • New treelist control for better UI responsiveness
  • Asynchronous thread symbol resolution on threads tab of process properties
  • More flags on groups in security tab and SID display
  • Thread IDs on threads tab
  • On-line search uses default web browser and search engine
  • Vista ASLR column for processes and DLLs
  • Vista Process and thread I/O and memory priorities in process and thread properties
  • Vista Process and thread I/O and memory columns
  • PROCESS_QUERY_LIMITED_INFORMATION support on process permissions on Vista
  • Run as limited user runs with low IL on Vista
  • Reports information for all object types on Vista
  • Show details for all processes elevation menu item on Vista
  • Supports replacement of task manager on Vista
  • /e to launch elevated
  • /s switch to select a process at startup
  • Compiled w/ASLR, DEP
  • Faster startup
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes and minor improvements

If you’ve decided that you want to replace the Task Manager with the Process Explorer it’s just two-clicks away. After you have Process Explorer open just go to the Options Menu, and choose “Replace Task Manager” from the list:

processexplorer11replacement

You can undo that operation at anytime by using the same item in the Options Menu, but I have a feeling that you’ll grow accustomed to the sea of details that Process Explorer provides you with. So go ahead and try it out…there’s no installation required and it runs on nearly all versions of Windows.

Calgoo 1.0: Managing your Google Calendar Online and Offline

This article was written on June 28, 2007 by CyberNet.

Calgoo Apps

Two big calendar releases within 24-hours…first Sunbird/Lightning and now this! Calgoo is out of the testing stages and has moved on to their first major version, and unexpectedly turned to paid software ($25 per year). The newest version sports a variety of changes ranging from a refreshing new look to performance enhancements. Here’s a more detailed list for you:

  • Complete Facelift
  • Improved Calendar Support – Calgoo now synchronizes Outlook, Google and iCal calendars and allows you to synchronize Outlook and Google Calendars via Calgoo. Support for stand-alone Calgoo calendars has also been added.
  • Outlook Contacts Synchronization – You now can easily import and export entire contact lists from Outlook. Calgoo is able to automatically determine modified contacts to synchronize, and where there are conflicts, will prompt you to decide which of the conflicting contacts to keep.
  • Printing – Calgoo now has a print feature based on the Agenda View. You can now get a list of your events, customizible based on your Agenda View settings, print it, and bring it on the road! The printout is monochrome printer friendly.
  • Simplified Find
  • New Database Engine – Calgoo has migrated its entire database backbone to Apache Derby DB.
  • Overall performance improvement – Calgoo is now much faster across the board: screen updates, navigation, transactions (query, save, edit, delete), calendar download, synchronization…

The new database means that it’s not possible for you to upgrade your current version of Calgoo, because it will not retain your old data. Of course if all your calendars are stored on online via Google that shouldn’t be a big deal.

The name of the application has also changed slightly, and is now called Calgoo Apps. I’m guessing that’s because it no longer manages solely your calendar…it does both tasks and contacts as well. A more simplified version called Calgoo Calendar will be coming in July 2007, which will be completely free and have almost all of the same features. The only real difference is that you will have to manually sync the calendar with Outlook instead of having it done automatically.

The colors available for your calendars have improved dramatically, because I thought they were, well, a little hideous before. That might be a little harsh but it was pretty difficult to read some of the text on the background colors that they had previously chosen. They still have some of the bad ones available in the color selection, but overall they are much more vibrant and readable:

I’m not 100% sure if the jump to shareware had the best timing, because I don’t feel as though there were a ton of feature improvements to constitute paying for the software. One thing that still frustrates me while using it is not being able to click and drag to create an event. You can quickly create an event by double-clicking anywhere in the calendar field, and then you can resize it, but you can’t click on the starting time and drag to the end time. Even the online Google calendar is able to do this as well as Mozilla’s Sunbird calendar.

As far as memory usage goes it is still not that great. Calgoo Apps uses Java as its backend so it is a little more bloated than it would otherwise be, and on my machine it starts up consuming 90MB of my RAM where I would prefer around 50MB. One of the good things about it being Java-based is that it is available on multiple platforms: Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Of course this program is extremely unique in that it can synchronize your Outlook calendar with Google Calendar in both directions. You can hop online to the Google Calendar if you’re on the road and need to add an appointment. Then when you return to the office Calgoo will automatically update your Outlook calendar so that it is perfectly in sync.

As much as I would like to compare this to the new Mozilla Sunbird I don’t think that is really possible. Sunbird does offer syncing with Google Calendar via an extension, but Calgoo has always done a better job of synchronizing. I think the interface of Sunbird is more elegant, but Calgoo has made a lot of great strides in making their program better. If your primary goal for having a desktop calendar is to synchronize with Google I would choose Calgoo, but hold out for the free version if automatic Outlook synchronization isn’t important to you.

Opera 9.5 Released; Firefox 3.0 Coming Tuesday

This article was written on June 12, 2008 by CyberNet.

opera 95.png

So it was just announced that Firefox 3.0 will be coming on Tuesday, but lets not get ahead of ourselves… Opera 9.5 is here today! The Opera team has worked tirelessly to bring you the next generation browser that millions of people will find comfort in using, and what they have to show for their work is something they can really be proud of. The new Opera 9.5 not only looks great, but it also harnesses the speed and power we’ve come to love in the browser.

Before we jump right in to what’s new, lets first take a look at some of the things the development team wanted to point out:

  • The number of Opera users has more than doubled since the release of 9.0
  • We fixed a new record of bugs, including 2350 showstoppers
  • The desktop team ate 12 pizzas while fixing bugs in 9.5 RC
  • IMAP is up to 4 times as fast in 9.5 than in 9.2
  • Almost 500.000 of you were already using betas of 9.5

Just 12 pizzas in two days? Come on guys… here I thought you were real programmers! 😉

A complete list of changes is available, but here’s a general overview of what’s new according to Opera Watch:

  • Opera Link synchronizes your bookmarks, Speed Dial, and notes between Opera on different computers, and even links to Opera Mini on your mobile
  • Enhanced address bar searches your entire browsing history, including the contents of each page
  • Security enhancements: malware protection, improved fraud protection, and support for Extended Validation SSL Certificates
  • New rendering engine with improved site compatibility and performance
  • Opera Dragonfly, the long-awaited tools for web developers
  • New skin

I strongly believe that the Opera Link technology is going to be something that will attract a large number of new users, especially those that use Opera Mini on a mobile device. That way they’ll be able to keep their bookmarks in sync no matter where they are at.

In addition to that list I would like to add that the mail client has undergone a tremendous overhaul that brings both performance and feature enhancements. If all of this sounds like something you want to try then maybe you should go grab yourself a hardy helping of Opera 9.5. Otherwise you can hold out for Firefox 3.0 which will be here in just a few days!

Thanks to Oropher, Omar, and Cody for the tips!

eBay Turbo Lister 2 Early Edition Released To The Public

This article was written on February 11, 2006 by CyberNet.

eBay Turbo Lister 2 Early Edition Released To The Public

My wife and I work for a company who strictly sells only on eBay. This means that we have many tools available to us and we have tried most of them. Turbo Lister is the one that seems to be the most successful by managing our listings and time in an efficient matter. There were some quirks that we didn’t like very much in Turbo Lister 1 but with the recent release of Turbo Lister 2 they seem to have fixed many of the issues. Not only did they fix issues, but they redesigned the interface to make it more intuitive (finally!).

One of the features that they added was inline editing of columns when you are viewing the grid (the page that shows all of your listings). This is nice because you do not have to open the edit screen in order to change something small, like the title or price of a listing.

As pictured above, they also changed the way the edit screen displays information about the listing. This page is the most important page that they changed because it is the screen that has the ability to minimize the amount of time it takes to create a listing. On this page they added many new features, like the ability to change your pictures without having to open another windows (and boy is that nice!). To help minimize the clutter in this window they have given you the power to choose which items should be displayed on the page.

If you are a subscriber to either Selling Manager or Selling Manager Pro then you can also do your relisting with Turbo Lister 2! The software will download the listings that have not been relisted and then it will put those listings in your upload folder. You can then go through and change details of the listings if you would like (remember, there is inline editing so changing the prices on the items you are going to relist is a piece of cake because you can change them right from the grid view!). This is very beneficial to us because we are constantly changing prices or small details on items and it takes forever to do this when you have 200 items to relist.

The one feature that I would have liked to see eBay implement into this release of Turbo Lister was the ability to have the software take fields that you fill in on the edit-a-listing screen, for example the shipping cost, and be able to automatically insert it into a listing at a given spot. This would especially be useful for those people that create templates because you would be able to have Turbo Lister grab details that you have already entered and put it into your listing. I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

Overall, I am very pleased with the software that they have provided us. Doing listings strictly online would get very frustrating and with the way Turbo Lister 2 handles, I give it my seal of approval!

Zoho Brings Interactivity With Microsoft Office

This article was written on November 30, 2006 by CyberNet.

Zoho Office 2007 Plug-in

Coincidentally Zoho just released a plug-in that almost does what many of us were talking about in the comments yesterday on the Google Spreadsheets post. The plug-in is for Microsoft Office and will allow you to save and open your Microsoft Word/Excel documents to Zoho from within the application itself. So you could look at Zoho almost as being another storage spot on your hard drive.

They also have a program from Desktopize that will make Zoho feel even more like a desktop application. It will provide things like shortcuts on your desktop, drag-and-drop uploads, and system tray icons so that your files will be easily accessible without that hassle of fumbling through websites or opening a sluggish program.

I really love these features and think it was a very important move to put Zoho beyond their competitors. The screenshot above shows the plug-in when it is being used in Office 2007 but it also works for older versions of the Office Suite as well. Unfortunately the plug-in doesn’t work for PowerPoint but the two primary applications that I use are Word and Excel anyways, so I can live with only having those be compatible.

So are there any Google Docs users out there that are feeling pretty tempted to switch their stuff over to the world of Zoho?

Note: These are direct download links because the two downloads don’t actually have a homepage:

Microsoft Officially Releases IE 7

This article was written on October 18, 2006 by CyberNet.

Internet Explorer 7 Microsoft has finally released Internet Explorer 7 even though their main page hasn’t HAS been updated. That means we still don’t have an official list of changes but the build number is 7.0.5730.11 and weighs in at 15MB.

If you are running a previous version, such as IE 7 RC1, on Windows XP you will not have to uninstall that in order to upgrade to this version. Internet Explorer will automatically take care of that for you.

I haven’t seen any information or download links regarding a Vista compatible version which is a little unusual. When Microsoft announces the release hopefully they will give us some insight whether to expect an upgrade for those of us running pre-release versions of Vista. I can’t really say that it matters too much for me because I hardly use IE anyway. 😉

Direct Download Links:

IE 7 – Windows XP 32-Bit
IE 7 – Windows Server 2003 32-Bit
IE 7 – Windows XP/Server 2003 64-Bit
IE 7 – Windows Server 2003 Itanium

CyberSearch 1.0.2: Pull Up Google Results Page Faster

This article was written on August 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

cybersearch 102.pngAnother day, another CyberSearch release. 😉 Over the weekend I had some time to work on a new CyberSearch feature that I’ve periodically received requests for. Like most features I had to think this one through to ensure that it wouldn’t interfere with the built-in Firefox keyword system.

So what have I added? In CyberSearch 1.0 you might recall that I added an entry onto the bottom of every search results list that would take you to the Google results page. Now we’re making it even easier for you to pull up the Google results page!

When CyberSearch recognizes that you’ve typed in a keyword or domain followed by the Enter key (or Go button) it will instantly take you to the Google search page that shows the same results you were looking at in the address bar. Obviously if you select a result from the drop-down list this feature will be ignored, but pressing Enter without selecting an item from the menu will pull up the Google results page.

This option comes enabled by default, but can quickly be disabled in the settings. You’ll find the option in the General tab:

enter goes to google.png

Keywords that have already been assigned in the browser’s search box will take precedence over any of the ones from our extension. The extension, however, does not look at the keywords you’ve created in your bookmarks, which means CyberSearch will override any of those. For that reason we recommend transitioning your bookmark keywords over to the search box, and I’ve found that the Add to Search Bar extension is useful in doing just that since it will let you add any search box from any site.

MyColors Caters to Sports & College Fanatics

Stardock has released a new application called MyColors that will really appeal to college students/alumni and sports fanatics. The program itself is a free download, and it’s goal is to completely skin your Windows XP or Vista operating system. It changes the theme, background, icons, gadgets, media player, and more.

There are two themes that that you can get for free with MyColors: Diamond and Quest. Diamond appears to be their signature theme as it’s also bundled with WindowBlinds, and Quest is pretty sleek despite the overwhelming amount of gold. Since the program is also free those are the two themes that you can get without dropping a dime.

The really cool themes, however, will run you about $20 each. From the looks of it MyColors is really focused on themes for the NBA, NHL, and college teams. I was extremely pleased to see the university I attended, Iowa State, was in the list. A screenshot of what it looks like running on Vista can be seen above, and Stardock does a terrific job of providing high-quality screenshots of each theme so that you know what you’re getting.

A video demonstration of MyColors is available, but I recommend just diving in and start checking out all of the themes available. There are over 50 that are college-specific, 30 NBA, 30 NHL, and dozens more. Also, you’ll notice that some are easier on the eyes than others. 😉

CyberNotes: Free Finance Software for Windows & Linux

This article was written on October 23, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Time Saving Tuesday

Ever since we wrote about Mint, the free finance management site, we have received a few requests from those looking for good software to manage personal finances. Sure there are popular alternatives like Quicken and Microsoft Money, but with those you have to fork out the same money that you’re trying to save. I just knew that there had to be something out there worth using that you didn’t have to pay for.

I spent a countless amount of time trying out feature-limited versions of software only to find that their restrictions rendered the software virtually useless for most people. Then I found exactly what I was looking for: Money Manager Ex. Not only is it free, but it is open source and available for both Windows and Linux!

–Setup/Importing–

I was able to get Money Manager up and running in no time at all. There’s a version available that requires no installation, and that’s what I chose to run. This is also great for throwing it on your USB drive and doing your finances wherever you are!

One of the first things that you’re going to do is create a database for Money Manager to store all of your information in. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be familiar with the workings of a database because it does it all for you. Just specify what default currency you want to use, and an optional username:

Money Manager Ex Wizard

Then you’ll have to create an account that falls under one of two different types: checking/savings or investment. The checking/savings account can also be used for credit cards, or for that matter anything that you deposit and withdrawal money from. The investment accounts are for stocks which you’ll want updated daily.

Many of you probably already have some software that you use to manage your finances, but that’s okay. You can switch to Money Manager by exporting your current data in a variety of formats:

  • Import information from Excel (Comma Separated Value -.CSV) format
  • Import information from QIF format (Microsoft Money & Quicken)

–Homepage & Register View–

Money Manager has a homepage that gives you a quick account overview so that you can see financially where you stand. It tells you the balance of each account, and graphs the current month’s expenses against the income:

Money Manager Ex

After you have created an account you’ll be able to manage the transactions in the register view. You can sort the transaction according to any of the columns, but you cannot reorder or remove ones that you don’t use:

Money Manager Ex Register

Another interesting thing is that each of your accounts can have different currencies associated with them. That makes it a bit easier to manage accounts that are held in different countries.

–Adding Transactions–

As with most personal finance managers, adding new transactions is pretty cut and dry. When you go to add a new transaction you’ll have to pick from a list of payees, which are added by you, as well as categories. Money Manager comes with a pre-built list of categories that should suffice for most of your needs – there weren’t any categories that I had to add.

Money Manager Ex New Transaction Money Manager Ex Payees Money Manager Ex Categories

–Stock Portfolio–

I think the stock portfolio is one of Money Manager’s shining points. You can have it “Refresh” the price of stocks automatically each day, which are fetched from Yahoo! Finance. It will update the price of every stock in your list, and tell you what the respective gain/loss is according to the price you purchased it at. You can also specify an automatic refresh interval if you want it updating the prices, let’s say, every 30 minutes.

Money Manager Ex Stocks

–Budgets–

With the budgets you’re able to keep track of your spending in each of the various categories, and you can provide estimated values for each one. That way you can see which categories you have spent more in than you had originally anticipated.

Money Manager Ex Budget

–Reports–

It’s always nice to know where your money goes so that you can try to find areas where you can cut back. Money Manager has several different types of reports that will tell you just that:

  • Summary of Accounts
  • Where the Money Goes
  • Where the Money Comes From
  • Categories
  • To Whom the Money Goes
  • Income vs. Expenses
  • Transaction Report
  • Budget Performance
  • Cash Flow
  • Transaction Statistics

If one of those reports doesn’t satisfy your needs you can always create your own, given that you have some knowledge of the SQL syntax. 🙂

Money Manager Reports

–Making it Better–

I realize that this is a completely free program and therefore shouldn’t complain, but there are some things that I think would really make this an exceptional program:

  • It seems like the program is popping up with too many windows to enter in information. I should be able to enter in a transaction from within the register view without a popup window being needed. Similarly, payees and categories should be autocompleted as you type instead of opening in a popup window.
  • Even though you can use the checking/savings account type for credit cards there should actually be a separate account type for those. That way the columns can read “charge” and “credit” instead of “withdrawal” and “deposit”.
  • If you want to accurately track the gain/loss of your stocks you’ll need to to create a new entry for each share purchase. There’s no way to enter in multiple purchase prices (nor dividends) into the stock portfolio. This would be a nice feature to have though.
