RIM investors re-elect board but revolt bubbles

RIM‘s annual shareholders meeting has kicked off, and investors are already restless as the company’s CEO and former CEO are re-elected to the board. Mike Lazaridis and Thorsten Heins were among ten people elected to RIM’s board, with investors expressing their dissatisfaction by withholding 19.1-percent of votes for Lazaridis and 14.8-percent for Heins. There are already questions as to how prepared RIM is to take on its smartphone and tablet rivals.

Leading the revolt is long-term thorn in RIM’s side, Jaguar Investments, which has been pushing for the company to sell off or license its patent portfolio since last year. Chairman and CEO of the investment group, Vic Alboini, was unsurprisingly present at the meeting.

Even before voting began, Alboini was vocal in his concerns. “Is it the board’s intent through your leadership as chair to aggressively seek technology-experienced board members” he asked, “that would bolster the strength of this board?”

RIM chair Barbara Stymiest insisted that the company was happy that it had the right skill-set represented on the board, and confirmed that the BlackBerry company had used the services of an external skills-hunting service to make sure the right people were present.

After the votes were counted, Alboini insisted on hearing the number of withheld votes for all of the candidates. “This is not an overwhelming approval for each of the directors” Alboini highlighted, and indeed 5 out of the 10 re-elected had 20-percent or more votes withheld.

HTC reports dire Q2 2012: Profit down 57% versus 2011

HTC‘s financial results for Q2 2012 are out, and it’s undoubtedly been another dire quarter for the company with a slump to $NT$7.4bn (US$248m) in net profit. That’s down in excess of 57-percent year-on-year, though better than HTC’s appalling Q1 2012 figures where the company saw net income of just NT$5.1bn ($173m).

Total revenues for the three month period of April to June 2012 amounted to NT$91.0bn ($3.05bn) while unaudited operating income was NT$8.2 billion ($274m). Pre-tax net income was NT$8.9 billion, and HTC says overall earnings per share come to NT$8.90 based on 831,227 thousand weighted average number of shares.

HTC has not had an easy time of 2012. The company has faced a strong challenge in the European smartphone market from the Samsung Galaxy S III, though its own HTC One X was well received by reviewers, and it still struggles to find a place in the growing tablet market.

Meanwhile, HTC has come under fire in the US from Apple, with the Cupertino company managing to secure a temporary sales ban preventing the One X and EVO 4G LTE from being brought into the country. That ban was only lifted after HTC tweaked the relevant software to bypass Apple’s patented technology, with sales gradually resuming in May.

Last quarter, HTC described its previously sluggish performance as a side-effect of a “rebuilding period” in which it readied its One Series line-up. The company is yet to comment officially on the Q2 results.

We’d like to wish all of our readers a happy 4th July, and we hope that you’ll be able to spend some time with family and loved ones and maybe even find a spare moment to throw some food onto the grill.

The SlashGear team will be taking some time off to spend with family and friends, but rest assured we’ll be keeping an eye out for anything breaking or particularly noteworthy in the tech scene. We’ll also have regular content through the day, just in case you need a break from burnt meat and fireworks.

If you’re still looking for something to read, why not check back over some of our recent reviews:

There’s plenty more reviews where those came from in our full archive. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of editorial and opinions in our Columns section if you’re feeling up for an argument. Have a great day!

“God Particle” shows itself: CERN spots Higgs boson

Scientists at CERN have announced that they have discovered evidence of a Higgs-like particle with an evidence signal of 5 sigma, the agreed threshold for positive identification of the so-called “God Particle.” Announced at a live streaming press conference from the Large Hadron Collider, the confirmation means there is a 99.99997-percent chance that the Higgs boson has been identified in the 125GeV mass range. The news has huge implications for the so-called Standard Model of physics.

That model attempts to describe the ways the universe works at a subatomic level, including the electromagnetic, weak, and strong nuclear interactions. Suggestions that the Higgs boson – a ”massive scalar elementary particle” – was a necessary part of that model were made back in the 1960s, but the huge amounts of energy required to actually identify the boson have kept it elusive.

“The Higgs boson plays a unique role in the Standard Model, by explaining why the other elementary particles, except the photon and gluon, are massive. In particular, the Higgs boson would explain why the photon has no mass, while the W and Z bosons are very heavy. Elementary particle masses, and the differences between electromagnetism (mediated by the photon) and the weak force (mediated by the W and Z bosons), are critical to many aspects of the structure of microscopic (and hence macroscopic) matter. In electroweak theory, the Higgs boson generates the masses of the leptons (electron, muon, and tau) and quarks” Wikipedia

Those huge energies have been what the CERN teams have been flinging around in the large hadron collider, with two teams, ATLAS and CMS, looking for evidence that indicates the Higgs boson is present in the aftermath of high-power collisions in the underground facility.

CERN says it has observed some of the key indicators that have indeed confirmed that to such a high degree of possibility, including state decaying to di-photon level with a significance of five sigma, and leaving them confident the Higgs is there.

“The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,” said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. “The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks.”

The search is not over, however; “it’s very early” the team say, and more data is still needed to confirm the combined channel significance, which is currently coming in at 4.9 sigma but, according to predictions, should be around 5.9 sigma for the Higgs. While the ZZ + gamma-gamma combination hits the 5.0 sigma threshold, overall CERN is saying it has “observed a new boson with a mass of 125.3 +/1 0.6 GeV at 4.9 sigma significance.”

“We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe.”

Legendary Ferrari designer Sergio Pininfarina dies

Legendary Ferrari designer Sergio Pininfarina has died, ending several decades of iconic car design that produced beauties such as the Dino and the 275. Pininfarina passed on Tuesday aged 85, it’s reported, having begun his career as a mechanical engineer but finding real fame with his incredible eye for detail and lines as well as an early recognition of the important of aerodynamics.

In fact, Pininfarina was the first to open a wind tunnel in Italy for use in coachwork design, the facility beginning testing back in 1972. He went on to run the family car design firm, lending his pen not only to Ferrari but to Maserati, Fiat, Peugeot and Mitsubishi, among others.

Along the way, as well as production models, Pininfarina took on special commissions for expensive one-off cars, concepts and prototypes. The 2006 Ferrari P4/5, for instance, rebodied an already outlandish Enzo with a custom shell, and cost around $4m in total to complete. In 2008, meanwhile, the company revealed an electric car, the Pininfarina B0 concept, which managed a 0-62mph dash in just over 6s.

Cars, though, were only some of the vehicles to benefit from Pininfarina’s hand. The company worked on several high-speed train designs, as well as domestic appliances and even the 2006 Winter Olympics torch.
