Office Depot and GameStop drops Nexus 7 16GB price to $199

Google’s incoming 32GB Nexus 7 may be one of its worst kept secrets, with most estimates (and those leaks) pointing to a $249 price tag and a launch date later this week. However, it also appears that the 16GB model will drop its price down to $199, according to leaked images from both Office Depot and GameStop — great news for anyone who’s so far held off from grabbing the first Nexus tablet. While an official announcement’s been delayed by the forces of nature, we expect to hear more from Google sooner rather than later.

32 GB Nexus 7 pricing confirmed at Office Depot

We’ve talked quite a bit about the new 32 GB Nexus 7 tablet this month. The tablet started as a rumor and those rumors have solidified over the last few weeks into an actual product expected to launch today. If you like the idea of a Nexus 7 tablet rocking 32 GB of storage, pricing has now been confirmed thanks to Office Depot.

Office Depot put the 32 GB version of the tablet on display over the weekend with official pricing of $249.95. Along with the larger 32 GB capacity tablet, the price of the 16 GB Nexus 7 tablet is also being reduced. Office Depot has that 16 GB Nexus 7 tagged with the price of $199.99. This pricing had been rumored earlier in the month, but it’s nice to see rumors confirmed.

Reports are also coming in that many Office Depot locations have stock of the 32 GB tablet on hand. That means in some locations you can walk in and buy right off the shelf. Interestingly, Google had an official event set for today to talk about the new larger storage capacity tablet and other products. That event was canceled thanks to the hurricane bearing down on the East Coast.

If you somehow missed all the talk of the Nexus 7 tablet and don’t know the other specifications, read on. The tablet has a seven-inch HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 800. The screen is covered with scratch resistant Corning glass, and it has a 1.2 megapixel front camera. The tablet also supports NFC technology and uses a quad core Tegra 3 processor. It also has integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A 3G version of this tablet was tipped for an unveil at the Google event that was canceled, there’s no further word on that tablet right now.

The 16GB Nexus 7 Reportedly Shows Up at Office Depot for Just $200

Leaked pricing details from numerous retailers have all but confirmed that the 32GB version of Google’s Nexus 7 will cost $250. Now another leak suggests the old 16GB model will drop to just $200. More »

Chromium OS Nexus 7 port

The Nexus 7 might be suiting up alongside the Amazon Kindle Fire HD in anticipation of the kind of competition that the iPad mini would provide, but you can be sure that this is going to be a tight battle. After all, Android has already secured more than 40% of the world’s tablet market in terms of operating systems. Developer Hexxeh has successfully managed to port Chromium OS over to the Asus-manufactured Nexus 7 tablet. Just in case you were wondering, Chromium OS is the open source version of Chrome OS, which is Google’s operating system that was specially s designed around the Chrome web browser.

Of course, you can always take the regular route of installing the Chrome browser in Android in order to experience a similar number of features, but Chromium does have its fair share of advantages. After all, it supports Chrome extensions and apps, allowing you to make use of Chrome on a mobile device in the same manner as it would on a Windows, Mac, or Linux desktop. Do bear in mind that the Chromium port for the Nexus 7 is still a raw diamond in the rough, and it will take some time to smoothen things up before it is being ready for a public release.

32GB Nexus 7 tablet spotted, going for $250 at Office Depot

Some folks have reported that they have managed to get a closer look at the 32GB version of the NExus 7 at a local Office Depot, where said tablet will still cost far less than the iPad mini at $250 a pop. One ought to take into consideration that the 32GB model of the Nexus 7 has been whispered about tech circles for some time already, in addition to word of price cuts being introduced to the 16GB Nexus 7 in the UK. At time of publishing, Office Depot’s website does list the 16GB as well as 8GB versions of the Nexus 7 as “not available for purchase at this time.”

According to the person who spotted the 32GB Nexus 7 at Office Depot, “Google may have cancelled the New York Android event because of Hurricane Sandy, but that may not stop retailers from going ahead with plans to offer product. The channel isn’t easily stopped, particularly when there is chance to get in front of competitors with a hot product.”

All in all, it does seem as though the 32GB Nexus 7 will retail for $250, with the 16GB model experiencing a $50 price cut – at least over at Office Depot

Ubuntu lands on Nexus 7 slates with Canonical’s one-click installer

Ubuntu lands on Nexus 7 slates with Canonical's one-click installer

If you’d rather not let your Nexus 7 live out its life as a Jelly Bean-toting device, Canonical’s freshly minted Ubuntu Nexus 7 Desktop Installer can help. Instead of allowing Ubuntu to ride shotgun with Android, the installer requires unlocking the device’s bootloader, which wipes the slate clean. Once the Nexus 7 is unlocked, started in fastboot mode and connected to an Ubuntu machine, the one-click installation software takes care of the rest. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes later, your tablet will be running full-blown Ubuntu. Since development is currently focused on getting the core of the desktop OS up and running, there’s no tablet-specific Unity UI to see here. However, Raring Ringtail is set to flesh out the mobile experience with an emphasis on sensors, memory footprint and battery life, among other features. Those who regret ousting Google’s confection-themed operating system can simply reload their device with stock Android. For the entire walk through, hit the first source link below.

Google postpones October 29th event over Hurricane Sandy worries

Google scrubs October 29th event over Hurricane Sandy worries

We hope you weren’t basing your calendar around Google’s big Android event on October 29th. The company has confirmed to us that it’s postponing the event to an as yet undetermined point in the future due to Hurricane Sandy, whose East coast arrival will follow so closely before the New York City gaterhing that Google isn’t willing to take the chance on its big day. If you’re experiencing a sense of déja vu, you’re not alone — Google delayed last year’s event revealing the Galaxy Nexus out of respect for the late Steve Jobs. While it’s not what we’d call an auspicious start to Google’s holiday launches, we can at least hope for an abundance of riches when the company is ready once again. The full statement waits below.

“We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more.”

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 25, 2012

Welcome to Thursday evening folks. Today was Microsoft’s big Windows 8 launch event, and though we didn’t find out many new details, the company did share a few interesting tidbits of information. For instance, did you know that there are more than 1,000 Windows 8 certified PCs now? How about the fact that Microsoft has sold a whopping 670 million Windows 7 licenses? Microsoft also told us that the Windows Store will be available in 231 markets, and that Windows RT is supported by more than 420 million devices. Impressive numbers to be sure, but it’s important to remember why we were at this show in the first place: Windows 8 launches in just a few hours, so get ready for that.

Today we had two massive companies deliver quarterly reports – Apple is looking pretty good despite a few under-performing sectors, but Amazon posted an operating loss of $28 million. Earlier in the day we heard that the LG Nexus 4 has a release date of October 30, and then more evidence of the rumored Nexus 10 surfaced in the form of a (supposed) quick start guide. iFixit gave the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display the teardown treatment today, while we heard whispers that Apple will launch a new online music service in 2013.

EE confirmed today that it will be offering the iPad mini and the iPad 4, and Nokia was seen touting its NAVTEQ True technology today. Nintendo revealed that it will be selling the Wii U at a loss, and we learned that T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note II has hardware support for LTE. Microsoft has turned Times Square into its own Windows 8 advertising space this evening, just in case you forgot that Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface are launching tomorrow.

Speaking of that launch, Microsoft laid out upgrade options for Windows 8 today, and told us that once we experience the glory of touch, we’ll want it on everything. Today Ubisoft told the world that Assassin’s Creed III is its most pre-ordered game ever (since Assassin’s Creed: Revelations at least), and we caught wind that the rumored Nexus 7 3G cleared the FCC. The Sony Xperia TL will be hitting AT&T on November 2, and finally tonight, the iPad Mini goes up for pre-order tomorrow, so be sure to get those in quickly if you want to get one at launch. That does it for tonight’s evening wrap-up, enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

3G Nexus 7 spotted at the FCC

It does seem as though next Monday is going to shape up to be a very interesting day for Google watchers – especially when a slew of new devices are anticipated to be released to the masses then. For starters, we guess that the Nexus 10 tablet from Samsung is more or less a given (considering how a purported manual of the Nexus 10 has already leaked online), in addition to what could possibly be a 3G version of the Nexus 7 tablet.

Google’s upcoming 3G-enabled Nexus 7 tablet has already been listed on the FCC website since October 24th, which further lends credence to previous leaks that the Asus-manufactured ME370TG model will join the merry band of Nexus-branded devices, in particularly walking hand in hand with its WiFi-only cousin. After all, the vanilla Nexus 7 is known as the Asus ME370T, so to see the ME370TG model make an appearance, you do not need to be a genius to put two and two together.

Nexus 7 3G pops up on FCC website

The FCC is typically pretty good at confirming new devices before they’re officially revealed, and today it’s doing just that. A listing for the 3G Nexus 7 has popped up on the FCC’s website (as uncovered by The Digital Reader), which essentially confirms that it will be one of the devices Google announces during its Android event next Monday. In other words, get ready, because there should be a heaping helping of new Android devices revealed at the event.

Of course, there’s no way to be 100% positive until Google gives us some official word, but our friends at Android Community point out that this new device is called the “ASUS ME370TG.” The original Nexus 7 was the “ASUS ME370T,” so it isn’t exactly difficult to connect the dots in this particular instance. What’s unknown at this point, however, is whether or not this 3G Nexus 7 will also be the 32GB model we’ve been hearing so much about.

At the moment, we’re going to go ahead and assume that it is, but it’s also possible that Google will reveal separate Wi-Fi-only and 3G Nexus 7s with 32GB of storage. In any case, it seems pretty clear now that Google will be announcing some kind of new Nexus 7 model during its event, so it’s officially time to get excited. After all, a new Nexus 7 model isn’t the only thing Google is rumored to have up its sleeve.

Rumors also say that it will be revealing the LG Nexus 4, along with the Samsung Nexus 10. It appears that there will be plenty of Nexus to go around, so now all we need to do is play the waiting game until October 29 arrives. Monday is just four short days away – are you ready for whatever Google has planned?
