Ubuntu Nexus 7 demo

Ubuntu does seem to have shifted their attention to the tablet and mobile market, where you can check it out in the video above that shows off Ubuntu running on a Nexus 7 (yes, the Asus-manufactured tablet for Google). From Ubuntu 13.04 onwards, one will see Canonical devote more time as well as resources in order to measure the ‘core platform’ function against ‘mobile metrics’ including battery life, memory consumption, and the likes. It makes sense actually, considering how the PC is giving up its space to other devices which are touch sensitive and more importantly, portable.

Mark Shuttleworth, after announcing the name of Ubuntu 13.04, did send a plea to developers to attend the upcoming Ubuntu Developer Summit that is happening in Copenhagen Denmark, while urging them to pack their Nexus 7s along as it would be the ideal ‘reference’ point.

Editorial Turning point for the tortoise and the hare

That meteor shower was a bust. I’ll never get back the five minutes I spent waiting to be awed. Anyone similarly impatient will be in gratification heaven for the next week, as the biggest cosmic bodies in the tech cosmos streak across the sky with announcements, device releases, price shifts and earnings reports.

Tossing astronomy aside for its failure to bedazzle, I turn to astrology to illuminate the upcoming eventful days. From a This Week in Astronomy blog: “A Venus-Pluto-Uranus T-square will be testing relationships and finances. The Sun enters Scorpio and aspects every slower planet except Pluto, and there’s an intense Mars-Jupiter opposition.” I don’t understand most of that, but I know about opposition. That fits. The energy of opposition crackles in the ecosystem warfare waged this week by Apple, Microsoft and Google.

Switching now from inscrutable astrology to fables (because next to cosmic messaging I like simple allegories to explain life), we can see that the slow-but-steady tortoise is placing the most audacious bet.

Google’s Oct 29 Android details leak: LG Nexus 4, Jelly Bean v4.2, Nexus 7 3G & Nexus 10

Highlights of Google’s incoming October 29 event, including both a new Android phone and a tablet, have leaked ahead of time, with an updated version of Android itself also expected to debut. The line-up has been previewed in an internal video, a source tells The Next Web, including the LG Nexus 4 seen in various leaks over the past few weeks, and a 10-inch Samsung-made tablet with an iPad 3-besting screen resolution.

The Nexus 4, based on LG’s Optimus G, will feature a 1.5GHz quadcore processor – Qualcomm’s APQ8064 Snapdragon, paired with 2GB of RAM – and have a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 display, slightly larger than the 4.65-inch panel of the current Galaxy Nexus. However, while Samsung’s Nexus uses a Super AMOLED display, LG’s will almost certainly use LG’s LCD-based True HD IPS+ panel.

Check out our full LG Optimus G review for more details

It will also be the first to use Android 4.2, previously believed to be called Key Lime Pie, but now tipped to continue the Jelly Bean branding until a more significant OS refresh arrives later on. Among the new features will be “Content in the center” which will put media from the Google Play store in a widget on the homescreen, as indeed the Nexus 7 focused on, along with “Tablet Sharing” that will allow multiple user accounts on each slate.

That will turn Android 4.2 tablets into more communal devices ideal to be shared by a household of users, with each getting their own email and applications. It’s something that has long been requested from Android (and iOS for that matter) and which individual vendors, such as Barnes & Noble with the customized NOOK HD/HD+, had begun to cook up independently.

Android 4.2 will also include an updated panorama mode in the camera, supporting horizontal and vertical panning, a feature that will likely look particularly good on the new Samsung tablet. That slate, which we’ve heard whispers of for some time now, is expected to use a 2560 x 1600 display, and is currently codenamed “Manta” though may well launch as the Nexus 10 so as to fit in with existing nomenclature.

Finally, the video also confirms two new versions of the Nexus 7, including the well-leaked 32GB model, and version with 3G HSPA+ integrated for getting online on the move. It’s unclear at this stage whether Google will attempt to do anything special with data pricing for the 3G tablet.

SlashGear will be with Google on October 29 to bring back all the details.

Report: 32GB Nexus 7 with 3G, LG Nexus 4, Android 4.2 and More Will Appear at Upcoming Google Event

Google’s got a surprise coming up on October 29th, and now we might now what it is. All of it. According to reports by The Next Web, it includes a 3G Nexus 7, Android 4.2, the new LG Nexus and maybe even some 10-inch tablet talk. More »

32GB Nexus 7 purchased at Staples ahead of October 29 launch

Evidence of Google‘s upcoming 32GB Nexus 7 tablet has been scattered all over the place, with a snapshot of a Sam’s Club retail tag appearing earlier today. The leaked image shows an October 29th release date, as well as specs and a placeholder price. Now it seems someone was able to buy a 32GB Nexus 7 at his local Staples.

Over at The Verge, a reader sent in an image of the the 32GB Nexus 7 box, as well as a Staples receipt showing the product’s name and $249.99 price tag. According to the tipster, he called his local Staples in Kissimmee, Florida, and asked if they had any 32GB Nexus 7 tablets in stock. The had three available, so he went on over and bought one, simple as that.

Earlier this week, Google sent out invitations to an Android event that is scheduled on October 29th, which, according to the leaked Sam’s Club image, is when the 32GB Nexus 7 will be available for purchase. As we said earlier today, an internal Staples document discovered by Android Police shows that, after announcing the 32GB Nexus 7 on the 29th, it will phase out the 8GB model. Rumor has it the 16GB model will be priced at $199.99.

Of course, this isn’t the first 32GB Nexus 7 to be shipped. Last week, a Japanese Google customer ordered the 16GB Nexus model, but was sent the 32GB model by mistake. If you’re hoping to get your hands on the 32GB model, call up your local Staples and ask if they have any. According to The Verge’s tipster, the 32GB Nexus 7 offers 28GB of available storage space, and runs Android 4.1.1.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 19, 2012

Welcome to Friday evening, everyone. We’re about ready to kick off the weekend, but before we do, let’s recap the news from the afternoon. Today we heard that the iPad Mini might mean the end of the iPad 2, and that a jailbreak for the iPhone 5 will coming shortly. We learned today that T-Mobile will be holding a product event on October 29 – the same day that Google and Microsoft are holding events – and that the prices of the rumored Mac Mini and iMac refreshes might be staying the same.

We had a few Nexus-related stories hit this afternoon, with a new Nexus 4 leak giving us some details on the phone’s specs, and an internal Staples document telling us that the 32GB Nexus 7 model right be replacing the 8GB variant. The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga will be launching in Japan as the NEC LaVie Y, and one expert is telling us today that there aren’t many visual differences between smartphone displays in 720p and 1080p.

Stanford Ovshinsky, who created the NiMH battery and helped developed many other products, passed away earlier this week, and YouTube launched Campaigns today, a feature that’s being called a “digital thermometer” for non-profits. Pricing for the rumored 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display could top $1,700, while the Skifta app for Android has been updated with support for Instagram and Dropbox. Moog unveiled its new LEV-96 “sensoriactuator” today, and we got word that T-Mobile is now requiring users to sign up for at least a 2GB data plan when taking home a new smartphone.

Microsoft unleashed the launch trailer for Halo 4 today, while EA CEO John Riccitiello was seen saying that social gaming isn’t dying. One unlucky Nintendo counterfeiter is likely headed to the slammer, Motorola has delivered a list of phones that won’t be getting an upgrade to Jelly Bean, and Rovio released a new teaser trailer for Angry Birds Star Wars today. Finally tonight, we have a new column from Don Reisinger for you to read through, in which he asks “How many tablets do you really need?” That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you have an excellent weekend!

32GB Nexus 7 tablets appear at retail with $249 price tag, October 29th street date

32GB Nexus 7 tablets appear at retail with $249 price tag, October 29th street date

Ahead of Google’s Android event on the 29th there’s additional confirmation of a storage upgrade for the Nexus 7, as 32GB units have now been spotted on shelves at US retailers. Seemingly dead-set on matching the LG E960 “Mako” Nexus G for the title of worst-kept secret, we’ve received this photo of a tag for the new unit at a Sam’s Club (with a placeholder price). Reports on Android Central and The Verge also mention hardware spotted at Staples locations, with one person actually succeeding in buying one. All of that follows a listing on the Staples website and one Japanese buyer apparently receiving one early by accident. According to the tags and receipts, the new units are scheduled to go on sale the same day as the Android event, and at the same $249 price of the current 16GB model. Now that the alleged Sony Nexus phone has been exposed as a fake we don’t know if there will be any surprises left, but if you want to buy anything from Google’s brand then patience (or at least shopping around) is probably your best strategy.

[Thanks, Adam]

Nexus 7 tipped to be bumped to 16GB standard for iPad mini battle

Well, this certainly is interesting: lately, we’ve been hearing all about the 32GB Nexus 7, which has been listed with a price tag similar to that of the 16GB model quite a few times. This has lead many (including us) to believe that the 32GB Nexus 7 will be replacing the 16GB model once it’s eventually revealed, but a new internal Staples document suggests that may not be the case. Uncovered by Android Police, this document shows that it will instead be the 8GB model that Google will look to phase out once the 32GB model is announced.

The document covers Nexus 7 endcaps for Staples stores, and more specifically, what those endcaps will look like once the 32GB Nexus 7 is released. Once October 30 rolls around – one day after the Google’s big Android event, remember – 8GB Nexus 7s will become clearance items, which of course means that Staples will look to move them quickly. This also confirms what we were expecting – that Google will unveil the 32GB Nexus 7 at its event on October 29.

So it seems that once the 32GB Nexus 7 has been revealed to the world, Google will stop producing the 8GB model. That makes much more sense than what we were originally thinking, and also explains why retailers are pricing the 32GB Nexus 7 in the $250-range. We’re not sure what price the 16GB model will drop down to, but it seems safe to assume that the 16GB variant will be given a $200 price tag once this new version is on the scene.

Of course, as Android Police points out, it’s possible that Google could continue offering the 8GB model online while only phasing it out in retail stores, but it doesn’t seem like there would be much point in that. In any case, Google’s Android event is right around the corner, so we should be getting all sorts of official details soon enough. Stay tuned.

Google said to have sold up to 1m Nexus 7 tablets

Google‘s Q3 2012 earnings got out a bit too early yesterday due to what seems like a printing error by the company’s printer PR Donnelley, and amidst all of the numbers and figures, the company is said to have sold between 800,000 and one million Nexus 7 tablets during the third quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

Munster believes Google’s “other income” line from its earnings report hints as to how many Nexus 7 tablets the company sold. The report showed a revenue of $666 million, up from $385 million during the same period last year. Munster thinks that “other” revenue may reflect Nexus 7 sales, which could’ve reached one million during Q3.

If Munster is right, that means Google sold over 10,000 Nexus 7 tablets every day on average since the device’s announcement back in late June. Google surprisingly hasn’t specified any Nexus 7 sales numbers considering that the company boasts about the number of Android activations there were in a given month or day almost every chance it gets.

Google’s Q3 2012 earnings report showed a profit of $2.18 billion, which is down from $2.73 billion a year ago. That’s $6.53 a share compared to $8.33 a share from a year ago. However, revenue went up for the company, reporting an $11.33 billion revenue. According to Google, an increase in expenses had a lot to with the lower profit. Expenses jumped 71% from last year.

Nexus 7 tablet is best selling Android tablet in the UK

There is a fair number of Android-powered tablets in the market today that aim to go toe-to-toe against the Apple iPad (and we would presume, the iPad mini subsequently), and the Nexus 7 from Google (manufactured by Asus) is one of them. Well, it seems that since the Nexus 7 tablet went on sale on July 27th in the UK by Carphone Warehouse, it has become the best selling Android tablet in that part of the world to date. Of course, this does not mean that the Nexus 7 has outsold the iPad – far from it, but at least it outdid the Asus Transformer Prime and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, perhaps its £159 price tag has something to do with it as well.

Of course, there are other newer faces to the market such as Amazon’s latest Kindle Fire HD that will also retail for £159 a pop. Graham Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer at Carphone Warehouse, said, “It’s impressive that this product is our biggest selling Android tablet, and it will be really interesting to see if other manufacturers will follow suit with smaller tablets over the coming months to spice up the Christmas period.” If you happen to live in the UK and are using an Android-powered tablet, just which model are you rocking to?
