Mod lets Nexus 7 owners pair an Xbox 360 controller with their device

If you own an Xbox console and you would love to pair your Xbox 360 controller with your Nexus 7, thanks to a user over at the XDA forums, you now can! While gaming controllers paired with Android devices aren’t exactly new, compatibility with the Xbox 360 controller has been missing all this while. We’re not sure why, perhaps it might be a rivalry between Microsoft and Google and the whole Windows Phone versus Android debate, but whatever the case, you now can. Now the bad news is that it will require you to root your Nexus 7 tablet, so if you haven’t done so already, you will need to. If you’re not sure how to, you might want to do a bit of homework before proceeding. However for those with rooted Nexus 7 tablets, pop on over to the XDA forums to get your hands on the mod that will now let you pair your wireless Xbox 360 controller with your device.

Google sends out invites to October 29 Android event

Well, what do we have here? Google has started sending out invites to an Android event that will be taking place in New York on Monday, October 29 – less than two weeks from now. The colorful invite tells us that “The playground is open,” and even though it doesn’t get into specifics about what we’ll see at the event (of course it doesn’t), we think we have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

That, ladies and gentlemen, would be the Nexus 4, which has been at the center of a lot of rumors lately. This new Nexus phone is said to be made by LG, and there have been plenty of rumors that claim the Nexus 4 will be very similar to the Optimus G. It looks like we’ll be finding out if there’s any truth to the various rumors come October 29.

The Nexus 4 may not be the only thing Google has up its sleeve. At this press event, it’s possible that Google will also reveal the new 32GB Nexus 7, which is probably one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry at the moment. We’ve seen the 32GB Nexus 7 popping up all over the place lately, and this latest model appears primed to replace the 16GB variant. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a reveal during the event, but at this point, an announcement almost seems like a no-brainer.

Of course, there’s no way to be sure of what will go down at this event until we’re in our seats, but whatever Google announces during this press event, we know it’s going to be big. We’ll be there reporting from the event, so you’ll be able to find out all you need to know right here at SlashGear. Who’s ready to see some new Nexus devices?

Nexus 7 to gain $100 model and 32GB model?

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet family–which is excellent, by the way–may be getting a little bigger. Perennial rumor mill Digitimes issued a report based on conversations with “Taiwan-based supply chain makers” that points to a $99 Nexus 7 tablet with a single core ARM processor, instead of the quad-core SoC beast currently in the $199 Nexus 7. Digitimes goes so far to say that it would launch before the end of 2012.  However, Asus has claimed that they’ve no plans to launch a cheaper Nexus tablet, so Digitimes thinks it could be made by Quanta Computer. While a $100 Nexus Android tablet would be an interesting price point, Digitimes is often wildly wrong, so don’t wait for a $100 Nexus tablet until you hear more information or Google announces it. 32GB Nexus 7 tablet seemingly confirmed through various listings and ads

It has long been suggested that Google has a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet planned, and reports not too long ago suggested that Google might have accidentally shipped out a 32GB Nexus 7 to a customer. While Google has yet to make the official announcement, the folks at Android Central have spotted an ad in UK retailer Argos’ Christmas gift guide which revealed the 32GB Nexus 7 tablet. Interestingly it seems that the ad has marked the 32GB version of the Nexus 7 at £199.99, and if you’re wondering about its significance, it’s because the price of £199.99 is also the price of the 16GB version of the tablet, suggesting that the 32GB model could replace the 16GB model.

In fact the folks at Android Police have also stumbled across a listing  on Staples’ Advantage website which has outed the 32GB Nexus 7. However the date listed says the 18th of October which we believe is merely a placeholder. The price listed on Staples’ Advantage website has also priced the 32GB model lower than the 16GB model by a few dollars, thus corroborating the speculation that the 32GB model will be replacing the 16GB version. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled so if you’re in the market for a 32GB Nexus 7, check back with us at a later date for more info!

What appears to be a 32GB Nexus 7 has already been spotted in Japan, and now a screenshot reveals that the slate has been listed on Staples’ business-centric storefront. Staples Advantage pegs the tablet at $248.37, placing it on par with the current 16GB model. If a Nexus 7 with beefed-up storage and a price tag similar to the one above does materialize, Google could put one of the current models on the chopping block to maintain its two SKU offering. The retailer also lists an October 18th availability date, but we’re not holding our breath for such a quick reveal.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 15, 2012

Welcome back to Monday everyone – we’ve got a heaping helping of news to recap, so let’s dive right in. Today we found out that Apple’s manufacturing partnership with Samsung may not last much longer, and that the Google Nexus 7 might just be the best-selling Android tablet ever (which, given its immense popularity, doesn’t surprise us in the least). One Walmart store has its shelves fully stocked with copies of Windows 8, and this afternoon, we have reason to believe that a new, slimmer iMac may be in the pipeline.

By now, you’ve probably heard plenty of iPad Mini rumors, but today we found out that Apple may reveal a new Mac Mini alongside the bite-sized tablet. Today we saw some pictures that appear to have been snapped by the camera on the yet-unannounced Nexus 4, and Apple has managed to bring former Amazon executive William Stasior on to oversee the continuing development of Siri. Android 4.1.2 was sent out to eager Galaxy Nexus owners today, and just in case you missed Felix Baumgartner’s death-defying jump over the weekend, you can see the highlights again today – complete with terrifying shots from his helmet cam.

LG delivered its Jelly Bean update schedule for a few of its devices today, and speaking of LG, AT&T announced that the Optimus G goes up for pre-order tomorrow with a price tag of $200. We heard that Windows 8 is getting an underwhelming response from vendors today, and Nintendo dropped the price of the original Wii down to just $130 in anticipation of the holiday rush. A new study is claiming that file sharers actually buy more music than people who don’t partake in that rather controversial activity, and Microsoft released a brand new Windows 8 ad today.

Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition players found out that they’re in for a treat tomorrow, while Notch was busy showing off new footage from his upcoming game 0x10c and Microsoft was handing out Xbox Live bans to Halo 4 pirates. Activision announced today that Call of Duty Elite will be free with Black Ops II, and we were told that the Wii U gamepad boasts a latency of only 1/60 of a second. Google is in trouble in Europe over privacy concerns again, and we got to take a look at a new robotic wheelchair that can actually walk up stairs. How cool is that?

Finally tonight, we have quite a few original articles for you to have a look at. Chris Burns puts the Optimus G through its gaming paces with Wild Blood, and we pit Xbox Music, Spotify, iTunes, and Google Music against one another to see the strengths and weaknesses of all four. We’ve got a new review of the Huawei Ascend D1 quad XL by Chris Burns, and a review of the Motorola Electrify 2 by your humble wrapper-upper. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Nexus 7 claimed to be best-selling Android tablet ever

The Nexus 7 is certainly a one-of-a-kind Android tablet, and it definitely lives up to the Nexus name, so it may not be too much surprise that the tablet is selling really well. The Carphone Warehouse, Europe’s largest independent mobile retailer, has reported that Google‘s Nexus 7 tablet has been the highest-selling Android tablet in the retailer’s history.

The Nexus 7 has eclipsed other Android tablets like the ASUS Transformer series and Samsung‘s Galaxy Tab, as well as the budget-friendly tablets like the Kindle Fire HD and the NOOK Tablet from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, respectively. But even the Nexus 7′s own budget-friendly price tag has been enough to out-do other tablets of its kind.

However, the Nexus 7 still trots behind Apple’s iPad, but 7-inch Android tablets of all sorts have seen rising demand. Carphone Warehouse has been receiving a rising number of orders for the smaller Android tablets running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which means that more and more people are starting to getting into the smaller-form tablets.

Graham Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer at Carphone Warehouse, says that he’s “seeing a real shift in what customers are using their tablets for, with more and more watching content on the go. It’s now common to see people using their tablets during the morning commute or catching up on the day’s news in a local coffee shop, and smaller devices make it easier to handle.”

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 9, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening, everyone. Earlier today, we found out that Samsung may be planning a Nexus 10 tablet, complete with a resolution to give the third-gen iPad a run for its money. ZTE gave its response to yesterday’s allegations that it may be helping the Chinese government spy on the US, and Apple started shipping the fifth-generation iPod Touch to the first customers today. We heard that the rumored 32GB Nexus 7 variant might be replacing the 16GB model, and speaking of the Nexus 7, it received Android 4.1.2 today, which adds a much-needed landscape mode.

NASA’s Curiosity rover has scooped up its first “handful” of Martian soil, while Verizon announced today that it will have 4G LTE in 418 US markets by the end of the day on October 16. Not only did Samsung announce the Galaxy Music smartphone today, but it also started teasing a “groundbreaking” Windows 8 device reveal for October 15. Microsoft has released a Windows 8 update ahead of its launch at the end of this month, while we heard that Windows Phone 8 pre-orders might open up on October 21.

Despite Apple’s best efforts, its Lightning chip has been cloned, and today the company was said to be in a long-running relationship with a carbon fiber manufacturer. We got to take a look at some snazzy new iPad Mini renders today, and were told that BlackBerry 10 might not launch until sometime in March 2013. Today was the day that Felix Baumgartner was supposed to attempt his record-breaking skydive, but at the last minute Red Bull had to pull the plug on the mission due to bad weather, with tomorrow’s jump called off for the same reason. Firefox 16 was released today, and Amazon filed a new patent for an online haggling system.

Ice Cream Sandwich finally hit the Motorola Atrix 2 today, while Jelly Bean was arriving on Galaxy S IIIs in Korea. Tens of thousands of Chrome users have fallen victim to a bogus adware app claiming to be Rovio’s Bad Piggies, and Valve has invited players to fill out playtest surveys for a chance to come into the studio to test new games and hardware. Gearbox released the Mechromancer DLC for Borderlands 2 a week early today, and the Humble Bundle is back, only this time it doesn’t feature any games. Skype users are being plagued by a trojan, so if you use the service a lot, it’s probably a good idea to check out our post to see what you can do to stop it from infecting your computer.

Finally tonight, we have a pair of original posts for your to read through. Chris Davies tells us why a Nexus 10 won’t solve Google’s problem with getting developers to make apps aimed at Android tablets, while Chris Burns has given us a review of the Acer TravelMate P243 notebook. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!
