SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 4, 2012

Welcome to Thursday evening everyone – just one more work day to go and then we’ll have arrived at the weekend. Today we received a pair of invites from Microsoft – one for a Windows 8 launch event happening on October 25, and another for a Windows Phone 8 event happening on October 29. We also learned today that Samsung intends to update the Galaxy S III to Jelly Bean “soon,” but sadly, we still don’t have a specific date to speak of. We were also told today that HP will be hiring more than 50 developers to work on Open webOS, which is definitely something to get excited about.

Google is said to be looking to the Nexus 7 for inspiration for the next Nexus smartphone, while AT&T was seen touting the fact that it will be offering both the Samsung ATIV smart PC (complete with Windows 8, mind you) and the all-new Samsung Galaxy Camera, which comes packing Android. Earlier today, we reported that Facebook has been auto-liking pages without users’ permission, but it wasn’t long after that Facebook got back to us with a statement telling us its side of the story.

Google finally settled its long-running lawsuit with US publishers today, and Intel announced a new Atom-based storage platform. We had a fair amount of video game news today, with EA and Maxis sharing a new 9-minute gameplay video of Sim City. Nintendo held another Nintendo Direct live stream today, during which the company announced that the special edition Pikachu 3DS XL will be launching in Europe and that a number of its 3DS games were going live on the eShop. Bethesda released Skyrim: Hearthfire on PC today, we caught a glimpse of a tech demo for Notch’s new game 0x10c, and learned that Mists of Pandaria sales are lagging behind launch sales for Cataclysm.

NASA gave us an update on Curiosity’s mission today, and we were introduced to the new PadPivot NST tablet holder. ASUS announced the VivoTab RT for AT&T, and we heard whispers that Logitech is working on a new wireless webcam for Macs. Hitachi announced a new airport gate prototype that quickly sniffs for bombs, and the iNUKE BOOM Junior speaker was revealed (though it’s still pretty big as far as iPhone/iPod speakers go). Microsoft announced it’s acquisition of PhotoFactor this evening, and finally tonight, our own Chris Davies asks if Google+ can eventually replace Evernote.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

SlingPlayer for Android gets a longawaited update, adds reminders and better Android 4 video quality

Fans of both Android and Slingbox streaming have had a long wait for a significant update to the SlingPlayer app, to put it mildly — the last major upgrade was to introduce Kindle Fire support at the start of the year. Imagine our delight when Sling Media posts a pair of low-key but significant updates for Android phone and tablet users alike. Smartphone owners get the most out of the upgrade with a new electronic program guide, a fresher overall look and better high-quality video for any phone using Android 4.0 and beyond. Tablet users do get a more optimized interface for the Nexus 7, however, and both form factors will let avid placeshifters remind themselves when a much-anticipated show goes live in the future. Neither of the updates is a complete revolution, but we would say they’re coming just in time.

Google looking to Nexus 7 for smartphone inspiration

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet has been a huge success, and it’s one of the most popular Android tablets out on the market currently. It’s been sold out in the Google Play store multiple times, so it’s definitely seen its fair share of demand. It may not be too much of a surprise then that Google is looking to model their upcoming Nexus smartphone after the Nexus 7.

Unnamed sources have said that Google is working with a handful of manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, Sony, and LG to launch a smartphone based on the Nexus 7 tablet sometime in the future. It’s said that Google is giving these manufacturers free reign to implement the design and hardware specifications for this rumored Nexus 7-based smartphone as long as they “are based on its latest native Android system.”

We’re not exactly sure when we would see one of these smartphones, but it probably won’t be anytime soon, since none of the manufacturers have even begun the designs stages from the looks of things. However, it’s possible we could see the Nexus 7-esque smartphone next year around this time.

Currently, a lot of rumors are flying as to what will be the next Nexus device to release soon. It’s said that we’ll see a new Nexus smartphone next month, and LG is rumored to be the manufacturer to deliver it — dubbed the Optimus Nexus. However, Google seems to always delivers solid hardware, so no matter what the next Nexus device will be, you’ll be sure that it’s going to be a powerhouse of a phone.

Google and Microsoft to expand Nexus 7 and Surface lines [Rumor]

Nexus 7 is to Google as Surface is to Microsoft, so what happens when there are whispers being thrown about the industry, touting that Google as well as Microsoft fully intend to extend the Nexus 7 and Surface tablet ranges to comprise of more than just tablets, but rather, to include smartphones as well in order to increase the level of penetration of their respective platforms to the masses. Just like the ancient proverb that says, all roads lead to Rome, so too, will both of these technology giants implement their respective strategies in a different manner.

Google wants to include smartphones based on their Nexus 7 platform while working with hardware vendors who have vast experience in the world of smartphones such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony Mobile Communications and HTC being likely candidates, whereas Microsoft is tapping up ODM maker Pegatron to deliver smartphones that are powered by Windows Phone 8 sometime in the first half of 2013. All of the above are not confirmed just yet, so we will be playing close attention to how the rumors will unfold down the road – whether they will be gospel truth or otherwise.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 3, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday evening, everyone. Today, T-Mobile and MetroPCS announced that their rumored merger was indeed real, and not long after, T-Mobile CEO John Legere released a new video explaining the deal. We heard more about the iPad Mini today, with the Wall Street Journal claiming that it’s already in production and comes with a 7.85-inch screen, while accessory maker Cygnett released cases for the iPad Mini a little bit early. Speaking of iPad, we found out today that Apple ships a whopping 188,000 iPads per day, which is just plain absurd.

The Kindle Paperwhite has officially sold out, so expect a wait of 4-6 weeks if you order one today, while listings for a 32GB variant of the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Nexus 2 popped up in a warehouse database. Apple will require approval for third-party Lightning accessories, and EE’s 4G network will go live across the UK on October 30. Oracle says that the rumors aren’t true and it isn’t planning to purchase NetApp, while Google was awarded a patent for its smartwatch today as well.

A tape featuring an eerily accurate Steve Jobs Q&A session from 1983 was made public today, and an Apple job posting suggests that an all-new SoC is on the way. The FTC has hit a former scareware distributor with a massive $163 million fine, and iFixit gave us a look inside the new Super Slim PS3 today. iFixit also told us that the amount of toxins in smartphones is on the decline, which is only a good thing, and HP CEO Meg Whitman is saying that the company will probably have issues making a profit next year.

The first presidential debate is tonight, do you know where you’ll be watching it? If not, we have a few suggestions for you. The budget-priced Nokia Lumia 510 was spotted in the wild today, and Facebook has started testing promoted posts for all regular users. Apple struck up a deal with biometrics firm Microlatch today, while Twitter Surveys were introduced as a paid service for advertisers and Sony’s PlayStation Mobile launched on the PS Vita and select Android devices.

Finally tonight, we have a couple of original articles for you to check out – Don Reisinger asks if there can ever be another Apple, while Chris Davies goes hands-on with a BlackBerry 10 Alpha B device. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Google Nexus 7 32GB spotted in Carphone Warehouse listing

Google entered the tablet market with a bang when it unveiled its own 7-inch slate, Nexus 7. The tablet was the result of a joint collaboration between Google and Asus. Ever since the launch, the tablet has become a significant player in the mini tablet arena.

Google is also expected to carry this success forth by launching successors to this tablet. However, for now, it may seem that the company has plans of launching more variants of the slate. Currently, Google offers Nexus 7 in 8GB and 16GB variants but a new Carphone Warehouse listing speaks of a 32GB Nexus 7 tablet (Wi-Fi only). (more…)

Nexus 7 32GB and Galaxy Nexus 2 show up in warehouse database

According to a photo taken of a database listing from what is said to be Carphone Warehouse in the UK, a listing of a 32GB version of the Nexus 7 appears, along with an Invisishield for a “Samsung Nexus 2.” This doesn’t necessarily mean that these devices are confirmed, but it makes us wonder even more.

Google’s Nexus 7 only comes in 8GB and 16GB variants, while its competitors are now churning out 32GB models, like the Kindle Fire HD and the Nook Tablet series. With that said, Google could succumb to the pressure and release a 32GB model at some point in the near future. Users would definitely appreciate it, especially since movies and music can take up a lot of storage space.

A Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2 device is easily believable as well, since we’ve already heard about it a couple weeks ago. The Galaxy Nexus 2 was supposedly leaked when a few sample photos from the device’s camera showed up on the internet with a familiar model number in the EXIF data. Of course, we don’t know what the device looks like or if it’s even real, but today’s leak is reassurance.

Then again, the listing that shows up in the inventory screenshot may not actually mean the “Nexus 2,” but rather just a screen protector for the regular Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The “2″ may possibly be just a database requirement of some sort that the warehouse follows. Then again, we don’t know for sure, so take it with a grain of salt.

If You’re Going To Buy a Nexus 7, You Should Do It Right Now [Tablets]

So maybe you’ve been sitting back, waiting to see what tablets the world has in store. That’s not a bad idea, but if you’ve been leaning towards the Nexus 7, you should just pull the trigger right now. Why? Because it still comes with a $25 Google Play credit, but only until tomorrow. More »

PSA $25 Google Play credit for Nexus 7 ends this weekend

Those who have been keeping a close eye on Google’s 7-inch, Jelly Bean-loaded Nexus 7 would know that the company kindly includes 25 bucks worth of Play credit with any purchase of said tablet. Unfortunately, as the famed cliché would tell us, all good things must come to an end — and, well, such is the case with this neat promotion, which will expire on Sunday, September 30th. Here’s the good news, however: there’s still a relatively good amount of time for folks interested to get it on the Google Play deal, so now would be the perfect moment to snag what some are calling the best $200 tablet — and who knows, this might even lead to a post-order Gangnam Style celebration of your own.
