Google’s Nexus 7 “Camping” advert was very effective, research says

Remember the Nexus 7 “Camping” commercial that we wrote about last month? Well, it looks like the ad became a huge hit, according to a research made by the advertising research firm Ace Metrix. The firm said that the minute-long ad was the most effective TV spot to break in the last week and the most-effective technology spot in the last 90 days.

During the research, Ace Metrix measured the effectiveness of the ad by showing it to 500 consumers. They proceeded to score the ad based on the viewer’s opinion in terms of persuasiveness and likelihood of watching again. Out of the 950 point chart, Google’s “Camping” advertisement scored 662. Rovi strikes Google Fiber patent license deal, keeps program guides flowing

Rovi considers itself the master of TV program guides everywhere — even if some disagree — so it’s almost inevitable that the company would negotiate a new patent license with Google. The deal puts all of Google Fiber’s TV interfaces in the clear, whether it’s the set-top box near the TV or the less traditional interfaces found on the web and the Nexus 7 remote. Considering Rovi’s existing connection to Google TV, the new pact may cement the company and its partner in Mountain View as surprisingly close friends.

IDC: Apple’s still king of the tablet hill with 68 percent of the market

IDC Apples still king of the tablet hill with 68 percent of the market

IDC‘s cabal of statisticians, nerds and people who just love spreadsheets have handed down their latest document about the state of the tablet market. Of the 25 million slates shipped in the second quarter, 17 million of them were iPads — giving Apple 68.2 percent of the market. Samsung came second with 2.4 million devices and Amazon third, although since the Kindle Fire maker doesn’t reveal numbers, there’s probably some guesswork involved there. Rounding out the top five are ASUS and Acer, although the former should expect to move up a place (or two), depending on the success of the Nexus 7 when Q3’s results are released in a few months time.

Android tablet gaining share, thanks to low-cost devices [study]

Android-powered tablets are gaining traction according to Frank N. Magid Associates. In fact they are selling fast enough to decrease the iPad’s overall market share, despite recent record sales for the Apple tablet. In a survey, Frank N. Magid Associates found that the iPad share went down to 50% from a record high of 72% during the previous survey.

The study’s conclusion was that low-cost devices like the Kindle Fire ($199) have been particularly effective to expand Android’s reach and with the imminent arrival of the Microsoft Surface and the strong start of the Nexus 7, things could get even worse for Apple’s tablet share going forward. That said, Frank N. Magid Associates still expects the iPad to remain the leader in the tablet race, but with a much reduced lead. (more…)

ASUS Nexus 7 Bluetooth keyboard case and rotating folio revealed

More official Google Nexus 7 accessories have emerged, including a Bluetooth keyboard case for the 7-inch Jelly Bean tablet, and a rotating folio-stand that allows for both portrait and landscape use. The ASUS-made add-ons are all expected imminently, UK retailer MobileFun claims, finally broadening the range of accessories Nexus 7 owners can choose from beyond the current polyurethane cover.

The Bluetooth keyboard case works as a regular folio for the Nexus 7, but also includes a kick-stand on the back to prop the tablet up at an angle on your desk. That way you can use the splashproof keyboard – which probably means rubberized keys, which will sadly cut down on typing feel – which itself promises 45hrs of battery life and simple recharging via microUSB, just like the Google tablet itself.

The rotating stand case, meanwhile, props up the Nexus 7 and allows it to swivel between landscape and portrait orientation. It, like the non-swiveling stand case, has a leather-effect outer and a microfiber interior lining.

Other accessories include the simple folio case, though it’s not clear if this is the same as the leather folio that leaked earlier this week. Currently it’s only listed in black, though the leather model is expected in four difference colors. Finally, there’s a screen protector, which promises not only resistance to greasy fingers and scratches, but better contrast from the Nexus 7′s LCD.

The Nexus 7 rotating case will be £27.95 ($44) while the non-rotating version will be £22.95 ($36). The folio case will be £39.99 ($62), while the Bluetooth keyboard case will be £79.95 ($125). Finally, the screen protector will be £14.95 ($23).

$125 MIPS-based Smart Tab 1 brings Jelly Bean on a budget to India

$125 MIPS-based Smart Tab 1 brings Jelly Bean on a budget to India

A MIPS-based tablet was the first slate to officially run Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and the processor technology will also beat the crowds to running the new Jelly Bean OS. It might be second to the Nexus 7, but Karbonn Mobiles’ new Smart Tab 1, available to the Indian market only, runs Google’s latest software — and its MIPS-based JZ4770 SoC, clocked at 1.2GHz, allows for the low price of $125. The 7-inch Smart Tab 1 itself isn’t new — it debuted with ICS in July — but current owners will receive an update, and new units will ship with Jelly Bean. Other specs include a 2-megapixel front shooter, HDMI support, 3G support through a USB dongle and up to 32GB of expandable storage via the microSD card slot. Head to the press release past the break for more info.

Nexus 7 premium cover and dock details leak

The Nexus 7 has been shipping out to customers across Europe and the United States, but accessories for Google’s affordable tablet have been lacking. There’s a simple polyurethane cover, but no premium options or docks of any kind. Nordic Hardware has spied some slides that detail some accessories that are on the way from ASUS, including a premium leather cover, desktop dock for the tablet, and 10W power charger.

The first accessory is a “Premium Cover” for the Nexus 7. ASUS describes the cover as being made from genuine leather, and it will have a microfiber material on the inner flap in order to keep the screen clean. The case is said to be hardened and reinforced to protect against tumbles, and several colors will be available, including red, orange, black, and white. The cover will ost $39.99 and be available by the end of August.

Next up is a desktop dock for the tablet. Many were wondering what the 3-pin connector on the side of the tablet was for, and it looks like it was added to take advantage of accessories such as this. Having said that, the dock is very basic: it only includes a microUSB port so you can supply power to the tablet, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio output. There’s no video output of any kind, as ASUS had to scrap the necessary silicon inside the Nexus 7 to keep costs down. The dock looks to cost $49.99 and be available on August 24th.

Finally, ASUS will be offering additional 10W wall chargers for the Nexus 7 in case you lose the one that comes in the box. ASUS will offer options for the United States, UK, Australia, and Europe, and a 90cm long microUSB cord will also be thrown in for good measure. They’re a little pricey at $24.99, so it might be worth shopping around for an alternative.

Nexus 7 accessories leaked, incoming dock

Asus’ Nexus 7, the Google tablet that has certainly made its fair share of waves over the past few weeks, looks set to be on the receiving end of its fair share of accessories, no thanks to a leak of presentation files that have somehow managed to sneak and make a way to Nordic Hardware. Nordic Hardware, not wanting to be selfish, decided to share this bit of news with the rest of the world, and some of the accessories include the already known Smart Case clone, a $20 Travel Cover which has already started to lurk around Asus and Google websites. Not only that, there is also a higher class leather Premium Cover version that will more or less cost double the amount. Why not throw in a cradle into the set as well? This $50 Nexus Dock sports an extremely simple wedge design and has all the relevant audio outputs. Bear in mind that these should arrive sometime later next month as summer winds down to make way for autumn.

Google Nexus 7 overclocked with custom kernel

Asus is the manufacturer of the highly sought after Google Nexus 7 tablet, where it already comes with a rather zippy NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, although it must be noted that this particular version of the Tegra 3 comes with just a clock speed of 1.2GHz, which is clearly slower that other tablets that feature the faster 1.6GHz clock speed. Well, there is nothing quite like fixing things yourself, which is why the introduction of a custom kernel to the Google Nexus 7 would result in it zipping along rather nicely at 1.6GHz.

According to Xda-developer forum member morfic, his version of DerKernel Trinity for the Google Nexus 7 is a custom kernel which will allow you to overclock your 7″ tablet to run in a more zippy manner, although I do wonder whether that is really necessary unless you are going to perform plenty of processor intensive tasks on your Google Nexus 7. Those who love tinkering around and experimenting would definitely not mind giving this particular custom kernel a go, but you ought to take note that things can go wrong with such customized kernels, so do perform a backup of all your important data beforehand!

Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes

There have been teases here and there that Google’s Nexus 7 was going to get a full, official accessory treatment from ASUS, but actual details have been scarce. Consider ASUS’ cover blown, almost literally. Presentation files finding their way to Nordic Hardware show the known Smart Case-like, $20 Travel Cover that’s already lurking on the ASUS and Google websites, but they also spoil a leather Premium Cover that will reportedly cost $40. As for a cradle to round out the set? While the company had previously confirmed that a dock was coming, we’re now getting a glimpse of the $50 Nexus Dock’s super-simple wedge design and audio output. With the exception of the Travel Cover, the accessory bonanza is pegged by the slides as arriving in late August — just in time for that last-gasp summer vacation.

Update: Nordic Hardware has since taken down its original post “at the request” of an unnamed party.
