SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: July 30, 2012

Well folks, another Monday is in the bag. We must say that for an otherwise ordinary Monday at the end of July, this one was pretty eventful as far as news stories go. Most importantly, today marked the beginning of the patent trail between Samsung and Apple. This morning we took a closer look at the trial and the arguments being made by both sides, while later on in the day we received word that a key witness in the case won’t be showing up to testify. Apple’s courtroom woes don’t end at its trial with Samsung, however, as the company is also being sued over its Siri technology by a university in Taiwan.

Moving right along with the Apple news, it looks as if the company might be planning to reveal the iPhone 5 during an event taking place on September 12, and there were also a few whispers about the rumored reveal of the iPad mini. Mac OS X Mountain Lion seems to be lining Apple’s pocket with even more cash, as it was announced today that the launch of Mountain Lion has become the most successful OS launch in company history.

In other news, 16GB Nexus 7s are now available at the Google Play Store again! They have an estimated shipping time of 3-5 business days now, but you might want to grab one sooner rather than later if you’re planning on buying – considering the speed at which the last batch sold out, we wouldn’t be surprised if Google ran out again soon. Microsoft announced that Surface will be launching alongside Windows 8 on October 26, and over the weekend an actual Xbox 720 developer kit was spotted in the wild, complete with a $10,000 price tag. Is the next generation Xbox closer to release than Microsoft is letting on?

Do you believe the National Security Agency is spying on American citizens? That’s what one former NSA agent claims. Ubisoft made a pretty big fumble when it was discovered that its UPlay client had some major security vulnerabilities, but thankfully the publisher was able to deliver a patch for the service quickly. The first round of Google Glass Explorer hangouts on Google Plus didn’t quite achieve the desired effect, and today we got our first true introduction to the new Wikipad gaming tablet. Will it replace your gaming desktop? No, it certainly won’t, but that weird-looking controller makes us want one anyway. Finally, the Curiosity rover will be landing on Mars soon, and NASA is planning on livestreaming the entire event. If you’ve ever wanted to watch history in the making, you’ll soon get your chance.

That does it for the news, but we’ve also got a couple original posts for you to check out too, with a new column from Philip Berne and a review of the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note by Chris Burns. Enjoy the rest of your Monday evening, folks!

Google Nexus 7 up for sale again

Google Nexus 7Good news for those of you who wanted to order a Nexus 7 tablet for yourself and found out that it was out of stock on the Google Play Store. According to reports online, it looks like the tablet is back up for sale again. Previously only the 8GB version was available but it looks like you can now get your hands on the 16GB version as well. The Nexus 7 tablet is the first Android device with Jelly Bean and has been receiving pretty positive reviews all over. It’s probably one of the better Android tablets around these days (how often do you hear about Android tablets being sold out?).

The 16GB Nexus 7 is available now with a price tag of $249.99. Be sure to check out our review of the tablet if you’re on the fence about buying one. If you’ve already made up your mind, be sure to pick one up before it goes out of stock again.

Nexus 7 16GB back on sale

Google has resumed sales of the Nexus 7 16GB, having sold out of the 7-inch Android Jelly Bean tablet and been forced to freeze online orders as ASUS worked to build up stock. Listed at $249, the 16GB tablet ships in 3-5 business days; stock levels began to look shaky midway through July, before Google decided to cease taking orders a little over a week ago.

Meanwhile, the cheaper 8GB Nexus 7 is also available to order online, again with shipping estimates of 3-5 days. That version comes in under the two hundred dollar mark, making it one of the cheapest brand-name Android tablets around.

That’s despite have solid specifications and the very latest version of Android itself. ASUS did decide to trim some of the spec sheet in reaction to the price; the company admitted that it purposefully opted out of including a rear camera because it would not have been able to afford one with sufficient resolution to make it worthwhile to owners.

Exactly what levels of stock Google actually had in the first place has not been revealed, and the company hasn’t announced sales figures for the Nexus 7. The tablet will be the centerpiece of Google’s new Fiber broadband and smart TV service, too, taking on the role of remote control.

It also makes for a useful companion to the Nexus Q, Google’s unusually-shaped media streamer, and something else that has been in relatively short supply in recent weeks. There’s more details on the Nexus 7 in our full review.

Google posts Android 4.1 Jelly Bean images for Nexus devices, modders rejoice

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on Google Nexus S

If you’re the sort to get a little too adventurous with CyanogenMod 10 or other custom ROMs, Google just gave you a crutch. Android 4.1.1 factory images are now available for every Nexus device that can currently get a taste of Jelly Bean: the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and the expected Nexus 7. While it’s not a complete safety net, the gesture will let dedicated modders flash their phones and tablets knowing that they can almost always jump back to the pure OS if someone’s definition of “alpha build” is a little too rough. CDMA users are unfortunately left out of the loop; let’s just hope they’re brought up to speed before too long.

[Thanks, Vince]

CM10 preview builds out for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Note: official but experimental

CM10 preview builds out for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Note: official but highly experimentalReady for the latest bout of XDA Recognized goodness? If you own a Nexus 7 or global Galaxy Note (oh yeah) then you’ll find official preview builds of CyanogenMod 10 for each device at the source links below. They’ll bring some added sparkle, like an almost-buttery version of Jelly Bean on the Note and USB storage on the Nexus 7, but neither build is ready for daily dependence — so tread carefully or just consider them proof that the CM and Team Hacksung folks are almost there.

PSA Nexus 7 arrives at the Carphone Warehouse today

However, if you’re also due a smartphone upgrade (or just want a new one), you can get it for free if you sign up to a data-sharing deal for £20.50 per month that’ll let the tablet leech your handset’s data for the following 24 months.

Google Fiber gets formal launch, adds Google Fiber TV (update: event video)

Google Fiber gets formal launch, adds Google Fiber TV

Google just kicked its Google Fiber efforts into overdrive. The company’s Kansas City effort is getting a full launch and now includes Google Fiber TV — a “real” TV service with recognizable channels and its own, fully searchable interface that mixes DVR results with Netflix and YouTube. As many as 500 shows can be stored in full 1080p HD, and several TVs within the home can tune in at the same time.. Not surprisingly, there’s also a major mobile component taking advantage of that 1Gbps fiber link, as users will have the option of browsing, sharing and eventually watching live TV directly from tablet apps. The company is also promising an ever-evolving service that includes Google+ video hangouts. For hardware, Google has its own dedicated Network Box with a four-port gigabit Ethernet router and 802.11n WiFi, a TV Box with live viewing and a WiFi access point as well as a Storage Box DVR with 2TB of data and the ability to record eight shows at once. Your remote control? A free, bundled Nexus 7 tablet, naturally.

The overall service will come with 1TB of Google Drive space, although it’s expensive to get started: there’s a $300 “construction fee” (currently being waived) to wire a home for the fiber optics. Three packages will be on offer, starting with a Gigabit + TV package that includes the essentials, all major channels and “hundreds” of fiber channels (plus on-demand content) for $120 a month. Skip traditional TV and it costs $70 a month — and if you’re a local resident willing to pony up the construction free, you can get 5Mbps internet access for free for “at least” seven years. Key institutions are getting the full gigabit access for free, as well. Only small slices of Kansas City in both Missouri and Kansas state should have access at first, but Google is conducting a six-week “rally” where the most people paying a $10 pre-registration fee dictate where Google Fiber goes next. Now if only other cities would go the same route.

Update: The full event replay is available for your inspection after the break.

Nexus 7 official cases now selling on eBay?

There’s no doubt that Google’s Nexus 7 is one of the hottest tablets to ever hit the market this year. Of course, this is not just mere speculation. Just a few days ago, we said that the 16GB variant of the Jelly Bean tablet has been labeled as “coming soon” due to its strong demand. That appears to be true as well in the U.K. as it has been out of stock. If you’re looking forward to get the official case of the Nexus 7 tablet via Google Play, you’ll probably have to wait a little longer because of its “coming soon” status.

But we are now hearing reports that a few sellers on eBay are already selling the official case at an unofficial price. Interestingly, one seller was able to seal a deal for $100 – that’s five times more than its price of $19.99 in the Google Play Store. Another seller is holding up the Nexus 7 case for $54, although the bid could change abruptly. So if you are short of patience, you might want to join the bid here.

Expert: Google Nexus 7 display is flawed, washed out

Is everything peachy keen with the Google Nexus 7? Apparently so to most quarters, but there are naysayers in the community as well, where some of them who are experts claim that Google’s Nexus 7 tablet might feature a fantastic LCD display, albeit it comes with pitiful calibration. This is what display expert Raymond Soneiraoogle thinks of the popular Nexus 7 tablet.

Hailing from DisplayMate Technologies, Raymond claims that the Nexus 7 “falls short” where its display is concerned, touting that he knew “something was seriously wrong” upon casting his glance at the standard photos which DisplayMate rely on to visually evaluate displays.

Raymond continued, “Many of the images were noticeably washed out — they looked like over exposed photographs with missing highlights, reduced image contrast, and weak colors.”

Basically, the LCD might be brilliant with great luminance, a high contrast ratio, an excellent Color Gamut and Color Saturation, but factory calibration of the display parameters is definitely off the mark – at least this is what Raymond thinks. What about you?
