Google Wallet support arrives on Nexus

NFC technology is not new, but the adoption rate of this technology has been minimal at best. Even efforts to include NFC connectivity in devices such as tablets and smartphones have not really taken off in a huge way, and most smartphones users too have yet to make a wireless payment via NFC. Google Wallet, despite being around for quite some time already, has until now received limited support from carriers. Perhaps things might change with the introduction of the new Nexus 7 tablet, as Google has announced an update for the Nexus 7 tablet which will introduce Google Wallet support.

One might argue that this does not make much sense at all, considering how a 7″ tablet is not exactly the most convenient method to perform payments on-the-go, but since you are already toting the Nexus 7 in an extra large cargo pants pocket or toting it around in a bag, why not give it a go when the opportunity arises? Using your credit card might still be a time saver, but there are bargains to be had with Google Wallet. Hopefully!

Nexus 7 preorders start shipping in UK and Canada

The Nexus 7 machine is in full swing. According to Google, all pre-orders placed by Friday the 13th in the US and Australia have been filled as of today (though some may still be en route), and our friends in the UK and Canada should be receiving theirs soon enough. Deliveries are currently heading out in waves, putting 7-inches of Jelly Bean in the hands of eager “footie” fans and beneficiaries of socialized medicine. Have you gotten your shipment notification yet? Let us know in the comments.

Update: Google has since changed the wording on its site and, unfortunately, not “all” US and Australian have shipped. Now it’s just “many.”

Update 2: Google has changed the wording yet again, now providing more detail broken down by model. As of 7:50~ ET, it indicates all standalone 8GB versions ordered on or before July 13th have been shipped, while standalone 16GB orders placed on or before July 11th will all be shipped by the 19th, and have also been upgraded to overnight shipping. Ordered with accessories like a case, charger or Nexus Q? Your slate will ship, overnight, this week although the extra bits may be following “soon.” Got it? Hit the source link to get it all straight from the horse’s mouth and to check whether it’s (inevitably) been updated once again.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Nexus 7 now listed as ‘in stock’ at Google Play Store

Itching to get your hands on the Google Nexus 7? The highly sought-after tablet is now listed as “in stock” at the Google Play Store, with orders shipping out immediately. Previously, the Google Play listing for the Nexus 7 said that shipping would take 1-2 weeks. However, be warned that this “in stock” status only applies to the $199 8GB model, as Google seems to be running low on 16GB models – the listing for those has been updated as well, but now the 16GB model has an estimated delivery of 3-4 weeks. Ouch.

It could be that Google was expecting the 8GB model to be the more popular of the pair. With a pretty attractive price point of $199, that logic doesn’t seem like it would be too far off the mark, but it looks as if Google was mistaken. Then again, it’s also possible that Google made a significant number of 16GB Nexus 7s, but it turned out that the 16GB model was incredibly popular consumers and now Google is struggling to keep up with demand.

Whatever the reason, Google now has Nexus 7s ready to ship to your door, so long as you don’t mind ordering the 8GB model. If you do mind, Android Community suggests looking at brick and mortar retail stores like GameStop and Staples. It’s possible that they’ll have a few 16GB tablets on hand, but don’t get your hopes up – it’s very likely that the 16GB Nexus 7 is in short supply throughout the country, not just at the Google Play Store.

OnLive says support for Universal Controller on Nexus 7 is coming ‘shortly’

OnLive says support for Universal Controller on Nexus 7 is coming 'shortly'

Those of you who are proud owners of one of Big G’s Nexus 7and are frequent users of OnLive’s Android offering — may have noticed the lack of support for the gaming outfit’s Universal Controller on the Jelly Bean slate at launch. Fret not, though, as that might be changing soon. Speaking to GottaBeMobile, the cloud company said that while there’s no Nexus 7 compatibility at the moment, it does “hope to have it shortly.” OnLive wasn’t quite clear about what “shortly” really means, but according to the aforementioned site, the Universal Controller’s had a tendency to work with some titles before “the official support was announced” — so a few of you could get lucky ahead of time. Either way, we’ll let you know as soon as OnLive intros a more formal solution.

OnLive Universal Controller to support Nexus 7 tablet soon

OnLive Universal ControllerOne of the selling points of HTC’s Flyer tablet was its ability to play games via OnLive’s cloud game streaming service, and it looks like the Nexus 7 tablet is going to be able just as good when it comes to gaming as well. According to reports online, OnLive is working on making its OnLive Universal Controller functional with the Google tablet. This means that users won’t have to bother using unintuitive touchscreen controls when it comes to playing games on it.

No word on when support will be fully-implemented, but the OnLive team hopes to get it working as soon as possible. How many of you are now thinking about getting an OnLive controller and subscription for your Nexus 7 tablet?

The Google Nexus 7 Is the Worst Gadget To Unbox, Ever—Watch Why [Video]

The unboxing video is a tired trope of tech blogging, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find new ways to embarrass ourselves with it. Like, for example, every tech blogger in the world failing miserably and hilariously to open the stupid box. Way to rage against the spaghetti-armed stereotypes, comrades. Nexus 7 now shipping in the U.K.

Last week, we reported that Google’s Nexus 7 tablet already began shipping to customers in the U.S. who were able to pre-order the device. And just a few days after the announcement, it seems that the highly-anticipated tablet is now shipping to U.K. as well. The Nexus 7 tablet is now shipping through retailers PC World and Currys. Both retailers are selling the 16 GB version of the device for £199.99. So, if you’ve already pre-ordered one, it should be arriving at your doorstep soon.

For now, no word about the availability of the 8 GB variant in the U.K. has been reported. The 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet is Google’s first tablet and is also the first tablet to run Android 4.1 a.k.a. Jelly Bean. It is powered by a Tegra 3 1.3 GHz quad-core processor with a 12-core GPU. Check out the latest news surrounding Google’s Nexus 7 tablet here.
