Surprise! The Google Nexus 7 tablet—aka the best way to spend $200—is shipping today. If you are looking for a tablet of this size, you should be cheering right now. It got a four-star GizRank in our review: More »
Dr. Suess it’s not, but Google just had to make a bit of hullabaloo about the launch of its first branded tablet, the Nexus 7. The search giant took the wraps off it a few weeks back, but now pre-orders have finally started shipping to those who plunked down the $199 (or $249) for the Jelly Bean-packing slate. A few of you tipped us that the charge had finally hit your credit card, and now the official Google Nexus Twitter account has confirmed the devices have been packed on to trucks. So, celebrate, unless you’re one of the hesitant ones that didn’t place your order early in the Google Play store.

The Nexus 7 is officially shipping out to pre-order customers, so some of you might be coming home (or staying in and waiting by your doorstep) for a big surprise.

It’s time to grab your Google Nexus 7 tablet – but only if you were lucky enough to have set up a pre-order with Office Depot, Gamestop, or a 3rd party retailer lucky enough to have picked up an early shipment. That’s not to say that Google has allowed such business, but for those of you actually finding a way to grab this tablet today: kudos to you. It’s being reported on several Android blogs and forums that not only are pre-orders from the Google Play store arriving across the USA and the UK, GameStop and Office Depot have them in stock as well – again, only for pre-orders, of course.
According to sources speaking with Android Community, pre-orders are arriving at homes across the UK as well as the USA, though these shippings seem only to be coming from non-Google Play store orderings. In the USA, we’re seeing a little bit different situation with several tipsters sending us messages reporting that GameStop is sending out text messages that include a note about bringing in old tablets and smartphones to reduce your pre-order price and pick up the tablet in-store today.
Everyone out there in pre-order land: let us know if you’ve gotten your tablet in the mail today, and who you ordered it from!
Everyone else: several stores have the devices in the building today. GameStop has been confirmed (unofficially, of course) and Office Depot more than likely has their shipment in as well. It wouldn’t hurt to head on down and knock on the door to see if they’ll hand on over to you – though we’re sure Google wouldn’t like it if they did!
Be sure to check out our in-depth Google Nexus 7 review before you do anything, of course. Head to it!

It could be a trickle or a torrent, but reports are coming in that Google is shipping the first Nexus 7 pre-orders to those customers who pulled the trigger at the Google Play Store while the I/O keynote seats were still warm. Third-party retailers Adorama and Ebuyer also briefly started selling the Jelly Bean tablet, although they’re now known to have jumped the gun: both were told by Google to freeze sales until at least Sunday. The word of an imminent arrival is no doubt music to the ears of those who thought that even the three-week wait was interminable. Still, we’d like to know whether yours is truly on its way or if that $199, ASUS-made Android dream will have to wait a little longer.

Just yesterday it was revealed by an intrepid magnet-holding developer in the wild that the Google Nexus 7 tablet had a magnetic secret – and today the fear begins for Google (and/or ASUS). The manufacturer of this tablet, ASUS, certainly must have considered that the magnetic display shut-off embedded in this device would ruffle the feathers of the likes of Apple as they’ve been using similar techniques in their notebooks and the iPad 2 for some time – but do ASUS or Google need to be worried? Perhaps not.
As it turns out, the patent for the iPad Smart Cover and the iPad 2 (as well as 3) owned by Apple is quite specific about its usage with the iPad, not necessarily with the rest of the tablets in the world. Another fine point that’ll certainly be made in court, if this situation does end up in such a place, is the fact that this tablet’s magnetic feature is close to the pogo-pins it’s also got prepared for a future docking device. The argument could be made that this device’s technique has nothing to do with a “smart” cover, instead lending its abilities to the audio dock we saw several months ago, also from ASUS.
Meanwhile the until-now-hidden feature on the Google Nexus 7 is still not reported in the Google Play store nor is it mentioned in any pre-sale pushes for the device from Staples, Office Depot, or Sam’s Club. These are the three stores that thus far have confirmed they’ll be carrying the device, while pre-orders are set to arrive slightly before the drop which will be happening within the next week.

Several retailers in the UK will be carrying the 16GB version of the Nexus 7, with stock reportedly coming in on July 20th. Ebuyer looks to have received some of the tablets earlier than expected, with one user taking to Google+ to say his order was being prepared for shipment. Checking Ebuyer’s site earlier showed that the retailer did have a small amount of the tablet in stock, but the company seems to have run out, with the tablet going back to pre-order status.
Bob Peers took to Google+ to let the world know that his order was being prepared, and checking Ebuyer showed that the retailer briefly had some tablets in stock. They all appear to have been snapped up, with the Nexus 7 listing indicating that the next batch will be available on July 19th. Ebuyer is just one of the retailers that will stock the 16GB version of the tablet, with others including PC World, Dixons, Comet, and the Carphone Warehouse. The 8GB version will not be sold in retail stores, however, and will only be available on the Play Store.
The Nexus 7 features a 7-inch 1280×800 IPS display, a quad-core Tegra 3 processor designed by NVIDIA, 1GB of RAM, 8 or 16GB of storage, and a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera. The tablet also comes with NFC, and is running the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean. When you buy a Nexus 7, you’ll also receive $25/£15 of free Play Store credit, plus a copy of Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon.
There’s no exact word on when the tablet will ship in the United States, although a Staples listing has indicated that it may be delivered sometime between today and July 17th. The Play Store currently shows a 1 to 2 week wait for both versions of the tablet.

It appears that Google’s flagship tablet – the Nexus 7 – actually has a tad magnetic sensor that is hidden under its display. The said feature, which can also be found on other devices, triggers the display to turn on once an external magnet is removed. This works well when you are using a case that also has a magnet on it, quite similar to the iPad’s Smart Cover which puts the tablet to sleep when the cover is closed. If you want proof of the feature, check out the video above to see it in action. So, judging from this unexpected discovery, it appears that the official case for the Nexus 7 tablet will finally put the magnetic feature to full use. It is interesting to note that iFixit, who did a thorough teardown of the device last week, wasn’t able to spot the said feature.

You won’t find this on its official specs list, but Google’s Nexus 7 tablet apparently has a magnet-enabled sensor that’ll automatically set the display to sleep — it’s hard not to think of the iPad’s Smart Cover. YouTube user wwscoggin was able to discover and pin-point the functionality near the bottom left of the device by gliding a magnet along its bezel. As Android Police notes, this appears to be the only Android tablet with such a feature, yet there’s no word on whether ASUS’ decidedly Smart Case-esque cases will make use of it. We’ve been able to replicate the action on our end, but don’t take our word for it, catch the video after the break.

This week its become apparent that not all is as it seems with the Google Nexus 7 tablet, especially in regards to the magnetic sensor sitting down near its lower left-hand side. This sensor was not reported by Google, ASUS (the manufacturers of this device), or anyone else in charge of promoting the device, but there it sits, switching our screen off and on whenever a magnet draws near. What does this mean for the future of this tablet? It means it’s one step closer to killing the iPad, of course!
Of course that’s not true – having a feature such as a potential for an awesome magnetic smart cover like the iPad has is no reason for thinking the device is anywhere nearer to the iPad’s overall power. But the fact remains: this is a feature that was not even suggested by the manufacturers or the pushers of the device. It was a tip handed to the Android Police that showed the world that this feature existed, with a hands-on video from their source here as well:
Now we get to see if there will be any patent claims thrown around should the device be seen as a threat to the iPad – or the BlackBerry devices that had a similar feature several years ago. Meanwhile it’s time to have another look at the Nexus 7 in hands-on form through our timeline below – be sure to hit up the review of the Nexus 7 as well as the Nexus Q for the full experience!
