Google Nexus 7 costs $152 to make?

Google Nexus 7We all know that the Google Nexus 7 is a pretty sweet tablet especially for the low price that it can be purchased for. If you’re keen on how much Google will be making on sales of the tablet, the folks over at AllThingsD have got the answer for you. After tearing apart the Nexus 7, the folks over at IHS iSuppli have come to a conclusion that the Android tablet costs $151.75 to build for the 8GB version. The 16GB version costs a bit more at $159.25.

While these figures aren’t exact (we don’t have the cost of workmanship, and time put into development of the tablet and operating system), they’re a good gauge of how much the materials cost. With the 8GB Nexus retailing for $199 and the 16GB for $249, it looks like Google won’t be making much by selling the version with less storage. Any of you planning on purchasing the Nexus 7 when it goes on sale?

Nexus 7 unboxing video with UFC champ Georges St-Pierre

While the world waits for the arrival of the Google’s Nexus 7 tablet, Canadian film-maker Patrick Boivin did a cool unboxing video of the tablet, but this time with fellow-Canadian and current UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre. Crazy huh? The unboxing video begins with the champ playing the role of Dr. Paul unboxing the tablet. As he was about to sit down to begin his thorough review of the device, suddenly three ninjas appeared from nowhere and invaded Dr. Paul’s room, all aiming to get a hold of the tablet. But Dr. Paul isn’t giving up too easily, so he challenges the three ninjas to a fight. Ka-pow! GSP then fights the ninjas in his own trademark MMA style. And what could be a better way to end a fight than to land a superman punch right straight into the ninja’s face. And oh, you can also watch the champ chewing a jelly bean in there. Enjoy!

Nexus 7 gets fabulous Google Ninja unboxing video

Today the traditional “Ninja Unboxing” video has been released for the Nexus 7, here with none other than UFC champ George St-Pierre playing the part of celebrity unboxer “Dr Paul”. This unboxing starts with an undeniably intense series of quick-cut sentences with the unboxing champ and rocks in quick with some stop-motion action via the Ninjas. This whole video was filmed and animated by the same fellow to do the rest of the videos in the past: Patrick Boivin.

Of course the unboxing really doesn’t bring much other than an amazingly entertaining series of punches and kicks with the Nexus 7 thrown in for fun, but hey, stop-motion ninjas vs UFC champ GSP is a good afternoon lunch-break view no matter how you cut it. Have a peek at the whole beast right here, right now:

Interestingly enough, it appears that this video was updated in July of last year – impossible unless Google had this device in the works since then. Of course that’s impossible one way or another since the Nexus 7′s hardware wasn’t planned for Google until earlier this year. So the whole situation is strange!

Google Might Not Be Losing Money On the Nexus 7 After All [Google]

There has been plenty of speculation about how much money Google is making—or losing—on its snazzy new Nexus 7. The analysts at IHS iSuppli tore it down, added up the cost of its components, and determined it’s cheaper than originally suspected. More »

Google Nexus 7 costs $151.75 to build, says iSuppli

Google dropped some hints that the Nexus 7 was essentially being sold at cost, and previous estimates have put the build cost of the 8GB version of the tablet at around $184 which would leave Google and ASUS with a mere $15 in profit. That’s not even taking into account marketing, research and development, and all the other areas that make up the creation of a gadget. Now IHS iSuppli has taken a look at the Nexus 7, and their own teardown estimate puts the cost at around $152.

iSuppli spoke with AllThingsD regarding the teardown, and believes the 8GB version of the tablet costs $151.75 to build. The 16GB model, meanwhile, costs around $159.25, the difference between the cost of the extra memory. iSuppli estimates that Google will be breaking even on the 8GB model, but will turn a small profit on the 16GB version, which retails for $249.99.

The previous estimate by TechInsights was higher, but the company was estimating the number without having access to the hardware. The iSuppli team, meanwhile, performed their best guess after having full access to a Nexus 7 and tearing it down. Google may not be making any money on the 8GB model, but it’s offering impressive specs for the price. An NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 3 processor can be found inside with 1GB of RAM,  paired with a 7-inch 1280×800 IPS display and the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean.

Nexus 7 with Android 4.1.1 shipping date shortened to a fortnight at worst

Generally speaking, those who did not make it to the Google I/O Conference this year definitely did not receive a free Nexus 7 tablet to play around with, and will have to wait patiently like any good customer would for the Nexus 7 to hit the general market. Well, it seems that we want to play the harbinger of good news, take note that the Nexus 7 tablet’s shipping date has been reduced to just 1 to 2 weeks instead of the original 3 weeks to a month. Not only that, the Nexus 7 will also come with Android 4.1.1 right out of the box.

A fortnight’s wait at most would mean Google is able to stick to their original schedule of rolling out the Nexus 7 tablet officially within the middle of this month, and those who have taken some time off to check out the Staples website for the Nexus 7, you would have realized that the Nexus 7 has a July 12th to July 17th range of dates for its launch. Are you excited about picking up the Nexus 7?

Google Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus updated already to Android 4.1.1

Even though it hasn’t even been officially released to the public yet, Google’s Nexus 7 tablet has already been upgraded to a new version of Android. Relax – it’s still Jelly Bean, but instead of version 4.1, the device is now running Android version number 4.1.1. It doesn’t bring a huge amount of enhancements but it is interesting to see the tablet already get a software update. The update is also being pushed to the international HSPA+ version of the Galaxy Nexus.

It can be looked both ways – either Jelly Bean was released with some flaws which could be a negative sign, or it’s reassuring that Google will put the Nexus 7 at the very top of its list of priorities. Even though you can’t go to a store and buy a Nexus 7, there are many people who own it. Google handed out early units to people who attended its IO conference.

Among the changes mentioned in the Android 4.1 System Update screen are: “Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to search on Google and get suggestions from Google Now. Organize your home screens easily even when they’re packed with apps and widgets. Expand notifications with a pinch to get more info and take action.”

Nexus 7 tablet now receiving Android 4.1.1 update

Nexus 7 tablet now receiving Android 411 update

Android 4.1.1 just made itself available on the AOSP servers yesterday, and evidently it’s wasting no time in heading towards the world’s first Jelly Bean tablet. The ASUS-built Nexus 7 is now receiving the update — a 12.6MB download that boosts the version number to 4.1.1. Our in-house unit isn’t pulling down the new edition just yet (nor is our Galaxy Nexus), so it seems to be one of Google’s typical phased releases. At any rate, Android Central is reporting that the code “improves performance and responsiveness system wide,” while also adding Google Wallet to your app library. Seeing anything else? Nexus 7 might hit retail this Thursday

It’s being tipped by several sources this week that Thursday might be the day that retail locations throughout the United States get their hands on the Google Nexus 7 tablet. This device has had its “expected ship date” switched today in the Google Play store from 3-4 weeks down to 1-2 weeks, and an Office Max internal document appears to have been leaked today noting that a massive 341 locations will have in-store availability starting less than two days from now.

This device has had pre-orders set up for Staples as well as Office Depot, and the former has been noting that they’ll be receiving shipment on or right after the 12th of this month. Office Depot has noted that pre-orders will begin shipping on the 12th, while Google finds itself in a potential jam, as it were. If the Google Play store is unable to ship their units for arrival before these two office stores get their products in for in-store sales, there will be quite a few angry Android fans out there, to put it lightly.

What you’re seeing above is a Nexus 7 Tablet Launch one-sheet sent to the email of a supposed Office Depot employee. If what they say is true, we’re currently inside the week that will give out the Nexus 7 to all those willing to pay for the $199 beast. For those of you that are unsure, head to our full Google Nexus 7 review, and check out the timeline below for more Nexus 7 action from the past couple of weeks!

Nexus 7 to be in Office Depot this Thursday?

Nexus 7 Office DepotFor those of you who haven’t pre-ordered your Google Nexus 7 tablet, it looks like you’ll be able to pick it up in store from Office Depot. The folks over at Droid-life managed to get their hands on an internal memo stating that Office Depot will be having units in selected stores beginning this Thursday (July 12). Folks who would like to ensure they get their hands on one of these bad boys can start making their pre-orders today, though they’ll only ship out on the same day they arrive at Office Depot.

Initially, Office Depot will only be carrying the 16GB WiFi model which will cost $249.99. If you’re thinking about picking up a Nexus this week or you’re still on the fence about it (assuming the memo is accurate), be sure to check out our review of the Android Jelly Bean tablet before you make up your mind!
