If you’ve been planning to get the device, there’s good news because GameStop, considered as the world’s largest multichannel retailer of video games, is now taking pre-orders for the tablet. GameStop said via press release that the tablet will be available for $249 in mid-July.

GameStop Gives You 30% More on Trade Towards Google Nexus Seven Pre-Orders

Google unveiled its slick 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet this week at its Google I/O conference. This little tablet will sell for $199 when it launches in the middle of July and will be running the Android Jelly Bean 4.1 OS. If you have your heart set on one of the little tablets and you’re like me with a drawer full of old gadgets you don’t use, you might want to swing by GameStop.

GameStop is offering a special deal to people who bring in old gadgets to trade on a pre-order of the Nexus 7 tablet. The retailer will give you 30% more for any item you trade in towards the pre-order of the little Google tablet. That 30% extra trade is good on video game hardware, software, accessories, and other smartphones and tablets.

Trade values for old Android tablets can go up to $250 depending on the condition and the tablet, so you might even be able to trade in an older tablet and walk out with a shiny new one. If you have a bunch of stuff you don’t use anymore, this may be the perfect way to get yourself a new tablet.

Google: Nexus 7 is proof we won’t give Motorola special treatment

Google has explained why it selected ASUS rather than Motorola Mobility for the Nexus 7 tablet, arguing that the good of the Android ecosystem is more important than giving the US company preferential treatment. ”We acquired Motorola to help the ecosystem in terms of patents and intellectual property” director of Android partner engineering Patrick Brady told CNET, though conceded that he could understand other partners looking on with some skepticism and fear.

“It was important for us when we acquired Motorola to stress to our partners that we weren’t buying Motorola to get in the hardware business and compete directly with them” Brady said. As far back as August 2011, Android chief Andy Rubin was insisting that Motorola would not be a lock-in for the future Nexus products, something that panned out with Samsung keeping the reins for the Galaxy Nexus.

“At first I think our partners weren’t sure whether we really meant what we said about not giving Motorola preferential treatment” Brady admitted. “But they’ve seen us do another Nexus smartphone with Samsung and the Nexus 7 tablet with Asus, so I think they see that Motorola is not getting preferential treatment. It’s all about the ecosystem.”

In fact, Brady is confident that other OEMs have subsequently been quick to recognize the advantages of Google wading into hardware development. “Android is open source, so they understand that by developing these products we’re working with silicon vendors to make sure all the technology works with the software” he points out. “And we’re enhancing the software.”

The Nexus 7 has been particularly lauded for its relatively affordable price tag, starting at $199 for the entry-level 8GB model. That’s down to a combination of cheaper components and different priorities; you can find out full review of the tablet here.

GameStop announces Google Nexus 7 tablet pre-orders

GameStop has announced that it is now ready to take pre-orders for the Google Nexus 7 Android tablet. The company has been selling Android tablets and other gadgets for a while now. With the Nexus 7 tablet being unveiled this week, there’s a lot of anticipation centering on the new Google offering. The tablet will be the first to feature Android Jelly Bean, and it will launch mid-July.

The retail price of the tablet will be $249 and starting today; GameStop is taking pre-orders on the tablet at all of its US locations. The best part about pre-ordering the tablet with GameStop is that the company is giving you a 30% trade bonus on all items you trade-in towards the pre-order of the Nexus 7. That extra 30% on trade is good for video game hardware, software, and accessories as well as any eligible Apple gadgets and Android tablets.

Giving you extra money for the stuff you might want to trade towards the new $250 Android tablet should make GameStop one of the better places to pre-order. Trade values will depend on what device you’re trading in and the condition of the trade device. Android tablets are bringing up to $250 of in-store credit.

Google Nexus 10 reportedly in pipeline

Google is reportedly planning a 10-inch version of the Nexus 7, presumably to be dubbed the Nexus 10, as the Android company readies for a huge push into the tablet segment. Announced on Wednesday at Google IO, the Nexus 7 will apparently gain a bigger brother according to DigiTimes‘ sources at touch panel manufacturers.

Those insiders claim that Google expects to use 10-inch touch panels from AU Optronics and Wintek for the new Nexus 10. Wintek is believed to be a supplier for the Nexus 7, too, and in fact is tipped to have already shipped 500,000 touch panels for the 7-inch Jelly Bean slate in June.

In fact, Wintek is believed to be supplying Google’s Nexus 7 hardware partner ASUS with over one million touch panel units during May through July, indicating the scale of Google’s tablet plans. Wintek isn’t the only supplier of the component, either, with TPK Holding said to also be contributing an unspecified number of touch panels itself.

Exactly when the Nexus 10 could launch is unclear, though as Google seems keen to use its new tablet line-up to motivate developers into creating Android apps suited to larger displays – even if it has to sell them hardware with no margin – then we’d expect the bigger model sooner rather than later. More on the Nexus 7 in our full review.

Nexus 7 pre-orders hit UK retailers

Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet has begun to spring up for pre-order at UK retailers, with Ebuyer offering the 16GB version of the Jelly Bean slate. Priced at £199.99, though – unlike through Google’s own Play store – with free shipping to save you a tenner, only the larger Nexus 7 is available, as will be the case with other retailers. Google is keeping the entry-level 8GB version for itself.

Your money gets you a 7-inch IPS touchscreen, NVIDIA Tegra 3 quadcore processor and 1GB of memory, along with a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera. Connectivity includes WiFi and Bluetooth, but no cellular option at present. Google says the battery in the Nexus 7 should last for around eight hours of wireless browsing.

Nexus 7 hands-on:

Shipping is expected from July 27, though previous reports suggested stock was expected from July 20 so if you get in early you might get one sooner than the official date. Ebuyer claims to have over 900 units available for pre-order (at time of writing).

Over the next few days we’re expecting to see PC World, Dixons, Comet, and the Carphone Warehouse all post listings for the Nexus 7, each confirmed to be planning to offer the tablet. For more on the Nexus 7, check out our full review

GameStop plans to sell Nexus 7, starts taking Android tablet trade-ins

Nexus 7 review home screen

Google’s Andy Rubin suggested the Nexus 7 would reach third-party US stores eventually — we just didn’t think it would be this quickly. GameStop says it’s taking pre-orders for the 16GB version of the Android 4.1 tablet starting today. At $249, it will cost exactly what it does in its currently exclusive Google Play home; in other words, one of the parties involved could be taking a voluntary hit on the already razor-thin profit margins. The 7-inch slate should be arriving roughly at the same mid-July timeframe as it is for those ordering straight from the Google source.

It wouldn’t be GameStop if there weren’t trade-ins involved, and sure enough, the game retailer is using the Nexus 7 as the lure. Confirming an earlier leak, the chain is now accepting Android tablet trade-ins worth up to $200 in cash (or $250 in store credit) depending on how pristine the hardware is coming into the store. Play your cards right, and you’re very nearly getting the Google-blessed tablet for free. As an extra incentive, any gear whose exchange goes directly towards buying the Nexus 7 will get a 30 percent boost in value. Knowing the buzz surrounding the price-to-performance ratio of the ASUS-made Nexus, we won’t be surprised if GameStop suddenly faces a glut of older Android tablets in its backrooms.

Google Earth 3D hands-on at Google I/O

This week Google has released the first public build of Google Earth‘s 3D flyover features, and at the Google I/O 2012 developer event, we got the chance to take a peek at a relatively massive set of four HDTV units combined to bring on one giant vision of the future. This 3D mapping feature is currently out for Google Earth on Android and will be coming soon to iOS as well, as our Google hosts note in the video below.

This hands-on – or eyes-on rather is just a glimpse of what you’ll be working with in the near future once you grab the update to the app you’ve already more than likely got running on your devices right this minute. This 3D mapping adventure comes at essentially the same time as Apple has announced their own 3D mapping project to be tied in with Apple Maps on the future versions of iOS for the iPhone and iPad. That said, this Google Earth action will also, once again, be available for iOS more than likely sooner than the Apple equivalent.

The folks you see above are both Googlers, speaking during the Lives Stream of the Google I/O events you may have caught from a different perspective earlier today!

Have a peek at the hands-on video above and peek at the couple photos above and below as well, and grab the update for your Google Earth app from the Google Play app store now! Also be sure to continue following us all week for all the most fabulous Google I/O 2012 action!
