Google Nexus 7 tablet official

This week at Google I/O 2012 the teams of Google and ASUS have revealed the Nexus 7 ASUS tablet – the first official Nexus series Android tablet – with Jelly Bean. This device has 1200 x 800 HD pixels across its face, a Tegra 3 quad-core processor with 12-core GPU from NVIDIA, a front-facing camera (whose specs were not revealed), and a 9 hour battery (video playback). This tablet is 340g light, “fits perfectly in one hand”, and “just feels right.”

This device has been revealed to show off the Jelly Bean experience, but also to push the Google Play app store to the forefront as well. This device has a new widget called “My Library” – it connected to your cloud in the Google Play shop.

Google Nexus 7 has officially been announced

As if you didn’t see this coming, but we guess it’s always nice when it has been made official. In case the image and the title above weren’t obvious enough, Google has officially taken the wraps off their Google Nexus 7 device, which they have confirmed is made by ASUS, the same manufacturer behind other popular Android apps such as the ASUS Transformer Prime. So what can we expect from this bad boy? Well for starters the rumors had some of the specs right, such as its 7″ 1280×800 display and the fact that it will be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor and will sport a 12-core GPU. It will also come preinstalled with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board, Google’s latest iteration of their Android operating system. Apart from that, users can expect to find a front-facing camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity. Weighing in at 340grams, Google promises 9 hours of video watching and 300 hours of standby time with a fully charged battery. As the rumors have pegged it, it seems that the Google Nexus 7 will not feature 3G connectivity perhaps in a bid to make it a more affordable device. (more…)

Google makes the Nexus 7 tablet official Android 41 Jelly Bean and a $199 price

Some of the mystery has been taken out of it, but Google has officially taken the wraps off of the Nexus 7, its first reference-grade tablet. The 7-inch slate is the first and currently only device shipping with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and takes advantage of its optimization for smaller tablet screens, magazines and movies — it’s also the first to ship with a finished Chrome for Android. Like what was widely suspected, the tablet is built by ASUS (shades of Eee Pad MeMO ME370T, anyone?) and mostly draws our attention in terms of what we get for the money: that quad-core Tegra 3, 1.2-megapixel front camera, NFC and 1280 x 800, IPS-based LCD are traits we’d normally look for in a pricier tablet. How much pricier, you ask? Google is asking just $199 for a dainty 8GB model and $249 for a 16GB version — that’s a lot of speed for the money, especially with a $25 Google Play credit and a slew of bundled content. There’s no SD card slot, however. We’ll test the Nexus 7 as soon as we can, but you can swing by Google Play (and possibly local stores) to order one in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US with a mid-July shipping window.

Nexus 7 tablet image leaked

We are right now in an extremely crammed environment, just waiting for the Google I/O Conference to begin. Leaks, however, have managed to sneak out of Google’s stable, with the Nexus Q followed by the Nexus 7 tablet. This is an Asus-derived piece of hardware, and the Nexus 7 is very, very real. Obviously, the number behind the name of the device gives the game away as to the screen size, where it is also speculated to run on the latest upcoming Android operating system – code named Jelly Bean. Delicious! Hopefully we will be able to bring you more details about the Nexus 7 tablet in greater depth by the end of this morning. Image courtesy of TheVerge.

Google's Nexus 7 cover turns on the Play store, will set you back $20

Not surprisingly, Google will have some accessories for its new Nexus 7 tablet, including a cover that also leaked out a bit early through Google Play (and spotted by MoDaCo‘s Paul O’Brien). As you can see, it will cover both the front and back of the device, and set you back a fairly reasonable $20. Available at least in dark grey, it has a matte (seemingly textured) finish, and provides access to both the tablet’s headphone jacket and charging port.

Google to hand over $25 Play credit with each Nexus 7 tablet purchase

Google to hand over $25 Play credit with each Nexus 7 tablet purchase

Among the premature Google Play leaks this morning is a line about a purchase bonus, to ship alongside each Nexus 7 tablet. As a temporary incentive, Mountain View is offering customers a $25 credit to spend on Play store content, along with additional content, including a copy of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. We’re just minutes away from the start of Google’s I/O conference keynote, where we expect to hear full details about the tablet and bonus cash, along with a handful of other devices, such as the Nexus Q.

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet outed before I/O 2012 (update: now with specs, price)

Google's Nexus 7 tablet outed before IO 2012 update now with specs, price

Well, it looks like the rumors are true. This morning, just ahead of 2012’s Google I/O initial keynote, Android Police dug up what looks to be an official press shot of Mountain View’s unannounced 7-inch tablet, aptly named the Nexus 7. As opposed to our previous sneak peek, this shot shows what is most assuredly the home screen for Jelly Bean, and comes directly from Google’s servers. Glad we got that settled. Now we just need to know about the actual hardware inside — good thing we’ve only gotta wait another hour or so to find out.

Update: Hoo, boy! The hits keep comin.’ The good golks at Modaco managed to grab screenshots for the sale page of the Nexus 7, replete with screenshots and specs. Turns out, the tablet has a 1280×800 IPS display coated in “scratch-resistant Corning glass,” which we presume is of the Gorilla variety, plus a front-facing, 1.2-megapixel camera. Within its 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm case lies either 8 ($199) or 16GB ($249) of storage, plus 1GB of RAM, and NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 SoC. Connectivity comes courtesy of GPS, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Micro USB, plus it’s got NFC for all your Android Beaming needs. Rounding things out is a 4325mAh battery and the usual spate of sensors: accelerometer, magnetometer, and a gyroscope. Want more? A video all about Jelly Bean and the new hardware running it awaits after the break, or you can hop on over to the source to order one for yourself.

Nexus banner spotted at Google I/O, Nexus 7 tablet announcement confirmed?

We know that Google is working on a Nexus tablet of their own, but hardware specs, design and pricing remain unknown at this point in time and are pretty much rumors, at least until they can be confirmed. However based on rumors as of late, it seems that there is a very good chance that Google could be unveiling their Nexus tablet at Google I/O which will be taking place later today in a few hours, and thanks to a photo snagged by the folks at TalkAndroid, it seems that those rumors may very well pan out. As you can see in the photo above, a banner that says “Nexus” was spotted on the third floor of the Moscone Center where Google I/O will be held. Unless Google is planning on revealing the next Nexus handset, it is safe to assume that the Nexus could very well refer to the much rumored Nexus tablet. Either way we will be live blogging the event, so be sure to check back with us at 9:30am PT for the details!

ASUS exec confirms imminent Google tablet

We’ve seen the rumors and leaks for months, but now an ASUS executive has all but confirmed that Google will be unveiling a 7-inch Nexus tablet later today. The exec, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke to Reuters regarding Google’s plans, saying the company wished to have its own affordable tablet in place to compete with others in the marketplace.

The ASUS exec didn’t want to give specific details on pricing or availability, but alluded to the tablet competing against a $199 device already on the market with its own range of content services. Previous rumors and leaks have indicated that the Nexus tablet will sport a 7-inch display with a 1280×800 resolution, a quad-core Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.3Ghz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, and cost $199. It’s also said to be running the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean.

Whatever happens, we’ll be bringing you live coverage from Google I/O when it kicks off later today. The main event begins at 12:30pm EST/9:30am PST, so make sure to check back then as we bring you all the information.
