Why the Wii U’s Launch Lineup Is Impressive

Nintendo’s Wii U will be launching with an ample number of video games to whet your appetite.

According to the venerable game company, a whopping 23 games will be available for the Wii U when it launches on November 18. New Super Mario Bros. U will of course be the leading title, but several third-party developers have also chipped in with games of their own.

I have to say, I’m awfully impressed. I know that I’ve been somewhat tough on the Wii U here on Slashgear, saying that you shouldn’t preorder the device just yet, but perhaps this game lineup could change my mind. For once, Nintendo seems to understand the importance of third-parties, with 19 of the titles coming from a company other than the Mario maker.

I’m a firm believer that game libraries define video game consoles. And I’m also a firm believer that without a solid launch lineup of titles that appeal to all kinds of gamers, it’ll be difficult for a console to get off the ground.

The Wii U’s launch lineup appears to check all of the boxes gamers would expect. There are the kid-focused titles, of course, but you’ll also find some adult games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Assassin’s Creed III. Add that to the new Darksiders and Arkham City and I think you have a solid game lineup.

And for those of us who still look back fondly at the old days of console launches that included all kinds of fighting games, having Tekken Tag Tournament 2 available on launch day just feels, well, right.

Now, I’m sure that there are some folks out there that look at this game lineup and worry. After all, many of the games, like Assassin’s Creed III, have been ported to the Wii U from other consoles. But I don’t necessarily think that’s such a problem. As Wii owners know all too well, we’ve been deprived of really great games available on other consoles. Finally, we can enjoy them on Nintendo hardware.

“I’m not blinded by reality here”

I suppose I should also point out that I’m not blinded by reality here. I know that Nintendo’s launch lineup doesn’t necessarily indicate that we’ll have hardcore games available over the long haul, and developers will love to support it. But I do think it’s a step in the right direction, especially coming off the Wii, which has proven notorious for its lack of appealing third-party titles.

After looking at the Wii U’s launch lineup, I have to admit that I’m a bit more excited at the prospects of this console than I was before. I’m not entirely sure that the Wii U will be able to hold up over the long haul as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 come out, but for now, I think Nintendo’s console will actually be another suitable gaming option.

That’s good news for us gamers. Once again, I’ll be able to enjoy games on three consoles, and not just two.

First New Super Mario Bros 2 DLC detailed

Nintendo is preparing the enter the realm of DLC, and one of the first games that will be getting additional content is New Super Marios Bros. 2. Nintendo detailed the first three DLC packs for New Super Mario Bros. 2 during the latest Nintendo Direct webstream, and even though they seem to be priced very reasonably, you’re not going to find much value if you aren’t a fan of the game’s Coin Rush mode.

That’s because all three of these DLC packs add levels for Coin Rush mode, so if you purchase them, you’ll have a lot of coin collecting in your future. The first had been dubbed “Gold Mario Go! Go! Pack” and will add three new Coin Rush levels. This is the easiest of the three DLC packs, which all apparently vary in difficulty. It also has a total of 30,000 coins for you to collect, so even though this is easy, you’ll have a lot of work ahead of if you want to collect every single one of those coins.

The second, “Challenge the Record A Pack,” will post your top scores on Nintendo’s website, so we’re also seeing Nintendo experiment with the idea of leaderboards with this DLC offering. There are three time trial levels to conquer in this pack, though there isn’t any word on the difficulty or number of coins. The third and final pack is called “Survival Panic Pack,” and features three levels once again. As you may have already guessed, this is the most difficult of the three, so expect some frustration when it comes to completing the levels contained in it.

There isn’t any word on western release dates yet, but all three DLC packs will be available in Japan on October 2. Each will cost 200 yen, which is right around $2.50, so Nintendo is keeping the price low with these DLC packs. Keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more information, as we’ll update you once Nintendo starts talking release dates for the US and Europe!

A steampunk style top-loading NES

Most long-time avid gamers would remember the days when the top-loading NES was the pinnacle of a gaming experience. With Nintendo having released the earliest of the NES models back in 1993, these gadgets literally paved the path for modern gaming.

And while they may be obsolete and out of sight now, there are those who still yearn to get a break from the modern-day consoles and go back to the days of classic NES-101. For those who identify with this sentiment, this modern mod, splashed with some unique steampunk style, may be very enticing. (more…)

Steampunk NES Delivers a Knock-Out Punch

Look at this beautiful console. It may look like it’s from the 1890′s, but it is just another modern mod that is beautifully done. And no, it doesn’t run on steam (though it would be cool if it did.)

Redditor Andrew5785′s nephew wanted his old top loading NES-101, so being the nice guy that he is, he decided to add some steampunk style and gifted it to his nephew, who loves steampunk stuff. Damn. Will you be my Uncle? I’m officially asking for your SNES.

I love the details. Now Andrew’s nephew can play games and pretend he’s in some Jules Verne submarine, while imagining that steam is oozing out of his console. Lucky kid. You did an amazing job, Andrew. Check out the full build gallery here.

Honey, I shrunk the Nintendo 64

Do you have fond memories of the Nintendo 64? Some say that this was one of the better video game consoles from Nintendo – do you agree with that statement or no? The thing is, it was particularly large and chunky, but thanks to the wonders of modernization and progress, an enterprising modder (who does not go by the name of Ben Heck by the way) has managed to shrink down an old school N64 into a far more compact form factor. Slipstream (aka Smackedsam) has had experience with portable versions of the N64 in the past alongside other mods, has managed to emulate the Nintendo 64’s styling with his latest mod, all the while ensuring it looked as though it had gone through a shrinking ray.

Dubbed the Nintendo 64 Mini, it is roughly the same size as the controller itself. Too bad this is not for sale at this point in time, but you might want to track Slipstream down and ask him whether he is about to put it up for sale or not.

The Wii U will launch with 23 titles

In the United States, the Wii U will launch on November 18. But what good is a console if there’s nothing to play on it? Today, Nintendo confirmed 23 launch titles, which is significantly more games than either the Wii or the Nintendo 64 launched with. Even better, there are some notable third-party games included with the always-excellent Nintendo games that come at the beginning of a system. Here your Wii U launch titles:

Nintendo 64 Mini Mod: N64 Gets Hit by Shrink Ray!

Maybe it was because of Super Mario 64, but I always thought the Nintendo 64 was one of the best consoles Nintendo ever made. But it was always sort of big and clunky. And while these days, you can emulate the console on a tiny handheld, there’s still nothing quite like playing with the original cartridges and the original controller. Now, one modder decided to shrink down his old N64 into a more compact form factor.

n64 mini

Modder Slipstream (aka Smackedsam), the guy behind some epic N64 portables and other mods, managed to mimic the style of the original Nintendo 64, but managed to reduce its size substantially.

It’s quite an amazing build job, since it looks like something that could have come right off the assembly line at Nintendo. Check out the N64 Mini in all its glory in the video clip below:

Heck, that thing is about the same size as the controller. I just love that sexy metallic orange automotive paintjob too. I wonder how many coats it took to make it look that great. Slipstream says the mod is for sale, and if you’re interested in it, send him a private message over on his YouTube channel.

Nintendo’s nailing down a specific date for nearly half of its Wii U “launch window” lineup, and it’s the same day that the console arrives in North America: November 18. 23 games will land at retail alongside the Wii U this November, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, and FIFA Soccer 13. Minigame collection Nintendo Land will launch with the 32GB, $350 version of the Wii U console, and will also be available separately on Nov. 18 — all Nintendo first-party games will be available digitally at launch as well. Earlier this month, the company revealed just over 50 titles planned for the Wii U’s “launch window,” which comprises November 18, 2012 through March 31, 2013. The full list of all titles is just below.
