Nintendo 2DS Unveiled

No, the title is not a typo, but rather, here we are with the freshly announced Nintendo 2DS. Yes, you can more or less guess from the name of the device alone that this will be the latest member of the Nintendo 3DS range, although it was specially developed to make portable gaming more accessible to the masses – letting you play Nintendo 3DS games minus the 3D effects, hence the name of the gaming console and a more pocket friendly price point of $129.99 a pop. Available in red or blue from October 12th onwards, it remains to be seen whether the Nintendo 2DS is going to be a hit or not.

You will also be able to enjoy the entire back catalogue of Nintendo DS games as well, which would mean you have at least a few thousand titles to get you started right out of the box. The Nintendo 2DS will arrive in a distinctive fixed, slate-type form factor that looks more bulky than sleek in my opinion, and there is also the option to pick up carrying cases at $12.99 a pop. Not only that, the Nintendo 2DS will boast of wireless connectivity features including multiplayer online game play, fun Nintendo Video content and great digitally delivered games in the Nintendo eShop. Since there is no 3D graphics supported with the Nintendo 2DS, here’s to a far longer lasting battery life!

Nintendo Reveals The Hideous $130 2DS, Will Cut Wii U Price To $299

    Nintendo 2DS

Nintendo wants to compete with cheap tablets more than ever, but just not the way you think. The company will release a new version of the 3DS — the Nintendo 2DS, which has a tablet-esque form factor. As the name suggests, it is a 2D-only handheld console compatible with 3DS and DS games. At $129.99, the 2DS is $40 cheaper than its sibling. The company also announced a $50 price cut for the Wii U on September 20, ahead of the releases of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

While the 3DS is doing well, it’s another story for the Wii U. As of June 30, Nintendo reported 3.61 million sales. As a reminder, in July 2007, seven months after the release of the Wii, the company was selling 1.8 million consoles each month. Now, Nintendo wants to compete on price to stay relevant.

But the console still lacks games. Many third-party publishers, such as Electronic Arts, Activision and Ubisoft, will only release their games on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 will cost $399 and the Xbox One $499.

Nintendo probably thought that launching the Wii U a year before its competitor was the right move to get a head start. But it is hard to convince existing Wii owners that the Wii U isn’t just a tiny upgrade with a tablet-like controller. The name of the console itself doesn’t help. It finally is an HD console from Nintendo, but it’s hard to communicate about the number of pixels on a screen.

With the 2DS, Nintendo finally built a gaming tablet. It could have a certain appeal to parents who are hesitating between a cheap Android tablet and a Nintendo handheld console, but the form factor doesn’t seem very practical for gamers, and especially children with tiny hands.

Available on October 12, the 2DS will retain the same features as the 3DS, except its main feature — the 3D display. It has the same stylus, Wi-Fi and comes with a 4GB SD card. While $130 is cheap, 3DS games are still more expensive than iOS or Android games. But you won’t find Mario on your iPad.

As Nintendo suggests in the 2DS promo video, the new console is “a handheld gaming system from Nintendo like you’ve never seen before.” Everyone can agree that Nintendo is right on this one.

An earlier version of this article misstated the price of the 3DS. It is $40 more expensive than the 2DS ($169), not $50.

Nintendo dropping Wii U price by $50 on September 21st, ahead of PS4 and Xbox One launch

Nintendo to drop Wii U price by $50

Well, the Wii U’s time as the only “next-gen” console on the market is about to come to an end. Its brief reign was marred by software bugs, missing features and a questionable price. Now with the PS4 and Xbox One preparing to launch an all out assault on the gaming market, Nintendo is trying to make its console-plus-tablet platform a little more alluring by dropping the price. Starting on September 20th, the Wii U will cost $50 less, making the deluxe bundle with 32GB of storage a slightly easier to digest $300. (The basic bundle, should you be able to find it, will remain $299.) At $100 less than the PlayStation 4 and $200 less than the Xbox One, it’s not a bad option for those with smaller gaming budgets — especially if those people happen to have kids or like to host parties. Of course, its library of available games still leaves something to be desired and its hardware is nowhere near as capable as its competitors, so it’s not exactly a clear winner. If you were considering buying a Wii U, clearly your best bet now is to wait until at least September 20th for the new price to go into effect.

Update: A Wii U bundle that includes The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker HD , which we first reported last week, will also launch on September 20th for $300. That rig includes a black console, a GamePad with special branding, a download code for the digital version of Hyrule Historia, a book and a Nintendo eShop download code.

Nintendo announces 2DS handheld gaming system, $129 on October 12 (video)

Nintendo announces 2DS handheld gaming system, $129 on October 12

Well, this is certainly a surprise. While the other big names in gaming are rolling out their new home consoles, Nintendo’s bringing a new handheld to the table. Called the 2DS, it looks like a 3DS laid flat without the hinge, and as you might surmise from the name, no three dimensional graphics. IGN reports that the 2DS will come in red and blue (with the front either being black or white, depending upon region) and will cost $129 when it arrives on October 12. For your money you get a handheld that packs dual screens, two cameras round the back, a single speaker and a 3.5mm headphone jack, plus a 4GB SD card.

The new handheld is considered to be a part of the 3DS family, and as such, it can play all 3DS and regular Nintendo DS games, and also provides access to 3DS apps like the Nintendo eShop. Nintendo is positioning the 2DS as a far more affordable option than the $169 3DS, which should make it the more palatable choice for parents with small children. Strong move, Nintendo, get ’em hooked while they’re young.

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! is a video game that will always be considered a huge influence to many gamers as not only was it one of the first sports games to be published on the NES, but it also did an amazing job at tweaking the difficulty ever so slightly so each new boxer becomes just a bit more difficult. Emulator Cabinet Works with 75 Controllers, 30+ Consoles and 2 Happy Players

These days you can run dozens of classic games on a PC using emulators. If you’re good with modding hardware, you may be able to connect the right controller for the console you’re emulating. But if you’re Patrice Daubaire, you take it one step further. Patrice hacked 75 controllers to make them compatible with over 110 gaming systems.

Patrice calls his ingenious mod the Multi Video Game System 2 or MVGS 2. He managed to universalize 75 controllers – from an Atari 2600 joystick to aPlayStation controller – so that they’ll work with different gaming systems via a custom VGA adapter. Patrice claims his system has zero input lag and that the controllers weigh more or less the same as unmodified ones. Patrice was also able to add additional functions like a quick save button on some of the controllers.

To present his invention, Patrice built the MVGS 2 Dream Station, a PC with over 30 gaming system emulators. It has a nice cabinet with a built-in monitor and lets up to two players geek out. He also setup a rotating display stand for the controllers.

Pick your jaw up from the floor and head to the MVGS 2 website for more information.

Gamescom 2013: a recap of the week’s news

It’s true — we already gave Gamescom 2013 a quick wrap up, but now that the sun has finally set on the show’s public days, it’s time to look back on the past week and sift through the madness. Upon closing the Koelnmesse’s doors, Gamescom announced the show’s final numbers: over the course of five days 340,000 visitors from from 88 countries marched across 140,000 square meters of exhibition space. That’s a 23 percent leap in attendance over the previous year, and it’s hardly a surprise: the event was host to over 400 world premier announcements and gave many attendees their first look at Microsoft and Sony’s next generation consoles. Combined with the more humble announcements that came out of GDC Europe, it turned out to be a pretty fantastic week for gaming. Read on for a breakdown of our time in Cologne, a look at the Gamescom 2013 show floor and a group chat between Joystiq and Engadget editors on the show’s biggest announcements.
