Nintendo Wii U’s spring update, Panorama View arrive next week

Nintendo Wii U's spring update arrives next week

Nintendo’s Wii U game console is getting its promised spring update next week, said company president Satoru Iwata in a Luigi-filled video presentation this morning. The update is said to launch software dramatically faster than before, as Nintendo demonstrated in a video last month. Iwata also said the update adds continuable downloads while the console is off, and that Virtual Console won’t arrive until the following week — should you wish to directly launch into the Wii menu, you’ll be able to hold down the B button as the console is starting up.

That said, if you wanna play those VC games directly from the Wii U menu, you’ll need to re-buy them for $1 apiece for NES games and $1.50 for SNES games. A variety of games were shown off as available at the Virtual Console’s launch, including classics like Super Mario World and Punch-Out! Apparently GameBoy Advance and Nintendo 64 games are planned for inclusion on the VC in the coming months, but no definitive date was given. He also said Panorama View will arrive next week for free, and it sounds like it’ll be a separate download from the software update.

Woman Buys Rare Game Worth $15,000 From Goodwill Store For Only $7.99

Woman Buys Rare Game Worth $15,000 From Goodwill Store For Only $7.99It is not uncommon that one will stumble across a rare and valuable item during yard sales or while browsing second hand stores, and that’s just what a North Carolina woman did when she purchased one of the rarest video games in the United States while at a Goodwill store for only $7.99, a fraction of what it could potentially be worth which is a staggering $15,000. The game is none other than an old Nintendo game called Stadium Events which was released in 1987 in the US during a market testing phase.

According to Wilder Hamm, the owner of Save Point Video Games who met the woman, the game was in great condition and still had all of its contents and even had its plastic on, although the top was cut open so that the contents could be examined. Other than that everything was there, the game instructions and the cartridge itself. Back in 2010, it seems that another copy of Stadium Events was sold on eBay for a whopping $41,300, but this was a completely sealed package, and given how fussy some collectors are, it is understandable that the value might have been slashed dramatically due to the cut in the plastic. Talk about a lucky find!

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Updated For Wii U, Now Supports Off-Screen Playing

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Updated For Wii U, Now Supports Off Screen PlayingOne of the cooler features of the Nintendo Wii U is its ability to take the game you’re playing on your television, and transfer it to the Gamepad. This is handy when someone needs the TV, or if you’re moving to a different location in the house. Now the good news for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate players is that the game for the Wii U has recently been updated and players will now be able to enjoy the game on television screen or on their Gamepad, whichever they prefer or whichever the situation dictates. The update will also be merging both the North American servers and European servers into a giant server, allowing players from multiple regions to all play together, get connected and hunt monsters. In order to update the game, all you’d have to do is launch the game and you should begin downloading automatically.

NES Cartridge Ring: Fancicom

Etsy artist Jess Firsoff makes NES cartridge rings. All you have to do is insert them into your loved one’s front-loading cartridge ring slot. You can ask her to make a cartridge stud out of any game, including the famous gold cart of The Legend of Zelda.

If you don’t specify your game of choice when you place your order, Jess will just make you a Mario Bros./Duck Hunt ring.

Jess normally sells the NES cartridge rings on her Etsy store Oh My Geekness for $25 (USD) each, but she temporarily closed the shop “for a few days” so she can work on her exams. I suggest you use the time to decide which cartridge you’d like to turn into a ring.

Nintendo Wii U Sales Believed To Reach Only 55,000 In March [Analyst]

Nintendo Wii U Sales Believed To Reach Only 55,000 In March [Analyst]

The “disappointing“ sales of the Nintendo Wii U may be continuing this month as there are still no noteworthy games on the console that would make gamers rush out to buy it as soon as possible. At last count, Nintendo had sold only 64,000 units of the Wii U in February, and it looks like their sales may have gone further downhill, according to an analyst.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has once again given his input as to how he believes Nintendo is doing with its Wii U, which of course he believes they’re still selling terribly. In a research note to investors published today, Pachter believes Nintendo sold just 55,000 Wii U units in the U.S. last month. The Nintendo Wii, on the other hand, did better in terms of sales as it moved 85,000 units in the U.S., although it dropped a total of 51 percent year-over-year. (more…)

LearnFun and PlayFun defeat video games with computer knowledge

The machines are just about to take over the planet now that computer scientist Tom Murphy has presented a paper on the possibility of video games being beaten by robots. It’s not quite that simple, but in essence, it’s time for Progress Quest to take hold. Presented at SigBovik 2013, what you’re about to see is a set of programs: LearnFun and PlayFun – the first watches you play the video game, the second takes the information and beats the video game much more efficiently than you can.

mariogo

What you’re seeing here is none other than Murphy himself taking a whopping 16+ minutes to not only explain the entire concept of both LearnFun and PlayFun, but a cool Mario Bros demonstration as well. Just the first level of Super Mario Bros, one of the most played video games of all time due to its in-box inclusion with the original Nintendo Entertainment System, is included for demonstration. You’ll see Murphy beat the first level, the machine learn from him, and the machine play.

This video shows how not just Mario Bros, but a wide variety of video games could technically be learned and beaten with the computer and by the computer. As the original NES system is just a miniature computer – ancient by today’s standards – it’s really only a matter of reading the button presses and pressing them at the right time. It’s not only limited to those one-possibility games either, this system could be expanded even to the randomly-generated worlds of today.

Now we’ve just got to amp up the power a bit and let this beast loose in the online worlds of WoW and whatnot. I know good and well I’ve sniped my own fair share of robots in Team Fortress 2 already. Bring on the Nintendo bots! PlayFun, you’re mine!

Power Glove Oven Mitt Keeps You Cooking ‘So Bad’

Power Glove Oven Mitt Keeps You Cooking So Bad

If it were up to us, we’d wear a Nintendo Power Glove at all times as it really is the perfect combination of a glove and a video game controller since no other video game console ever attempted to combine them again. We’re not sure if the reasons were because the Power Glove was so perfect, or if no company thought those two things should ever coexist in a single device again, but either way, we know just how rad it is, unless you’re pulling out tasty treats from your oven.

Using your Power Glove to pull out a hot pan that has been sitting in 450-degree heat may not be the best idea, which is why the Power Mitt may be the most logical choice if you’re baking a sheet full of cookies for your fellow bros to enjoy. For only $15, you can be the envy of your baking party as you can pull considerably hot items from your oven while also looking extremely cool by having something that looks like a Power Glove attached to your hand. Just remember the Power Mitt will, in no way, help you become a better gamer. Just a better baker.

Duck Hunt Pinball Machine Is As Awesome As It Sounds

One of the most iconic games from Nintendo’s history has got to be Duck Hunt as not only was it often bundled with the console, but it also showed off the ability of the console’s light gun peripheral, although it was one of the only games to use the accessory. That’s why when we saw somebody payed homage to the classic NES game in the form of a pinball machine, we had to feature it.

The Duck Hunt Pinball Machine was a labor of love by the folks at Skit-B Pinball as it took a little less than a year to complete as they modified a Williams Valiant pinball machine to create it. Many of the sights and sounds that you remember so well from the game have been included in the pinball machine, and yes, that damn dog is still there, laughing at you every chance he gets. (more…)
