Duck Hunt Pinball Machine is Still Hounded by that Damned Dog

The crew of Skit-B Pinball made this wonderful homage to one of the most recognizable NES games, Duck Hunt. It may not be as complicated or have fancy lighting effects and ramps like other modern pinball machines, but the craftsmanship is so good that it looks like an official Nintendo product.

As if the wonderful art and parts weren’t awesome enough, the machine borrows gameplay and graphical elements from Duck Hunt. You have to hit the two orange and white circles in the middle of the playfield to fire at the ducks while some of the holes act as score multipliers. You get feedback by way of an LCD monitor installed in the backbox. And yes, if you lose your ball, that troll of a dog will appear to mock you.

The fact that they built the machine in their spare time makes me want to cry during my upcoming spare time.

Detune’s Korg M01D for Nintendo 3DS sparks nostalgia, lands in May (video)

Detune's Korg M01D for Nintendo 3DS sparks nostalgia, lands in May (video)

This isn’t the first time a Korg synth has been re-imagined in software form, it’s not even the first (or second) time on Nintendo’s DS. But, when Detune releases its M01D for the handheld console, it’ll spark more than a little nostalgia for synth enthusiasts. Why? Because it’s heavily inspired by Korg’s legendary M1 synth, complete with all its sounds (and yes, the famous piano patch included), plus some new ones thrown in for good measure. The DS version includes a step sequencer (eight tracks with up to 64 steps per sequence) that you can compile together in “scenes.” Borrowing from other parts of the Korg family, the M01D app also offers a KAOSS mode, too, no doubt using one of those screens serving as the touchpad. You can preserve your creativity by saving to SD card, or the usual internet sharing options, and heck there’s even a 3D viewing mode too. Lordy! How that will actually look, we don’t know, or at least we won’t until its May release in Japan, before reaching the rest of the world in Summer.

Power Mitt: Everything Else in Your Kitchen Is Child’s Play

While I’m sure most of you never had the *cough* pleasure of actually playing a game with the Nintendo/Mattel Power Glove, you can certainly pick a working one up over on eBay if you’ve got about $100 kicking around. But why would you want to play such a mediocre game as Super Glove Ball, when you can bake some Super Mario Bros. cookies instead?

With Fangamer’s Power Mitt, you’ll be cooking with gas! The searing heat of baking sheets stands no chance against this Power Glove inspired oven mitt, designed by Jon Kay. And just like the original, you’re pretty much SOL if you’re left-handed. Though Fangamer is at least considering a version for lefties if there’s enough demand. Or if you’re Fred Savage.

The Power Mitt is just $15(USD) over at Fangamer.

Duck Hunt pinball machine unites analog and PC in a nostalgia singularity (video)

Duck Hunt pinball machine merges analog and digital in a nostalgia singularity video

We like pinball. We like classic NES games. Accordingly, it doesn’t take much deduction to know that we really, really like Skit-B Pinball’s Duck Hunt pinball machine. It has a fully mechanical, themed pinball machine below, but there’s also a PC up top that replicates the images and sounds of Nintendo’s light gun video game in sync with the analog action. The conversion of a Williams Valiant took about a year of off-hours work to finish, and it shows — the attention to detail is what we’d expect if Gunpei Yokoi had put all his energy into pinball instead. Our only lament is that the Duck Hunt machine is a side project, and it likely won’t escape into the wild. At least there’s a video (after the break) to sate our curiosity.

Nintendo of America retiring several Wii online services on June 28th

DNP Nintendo of America retiring several Wii network services on June 28th

Earlier today, Nintendo announced that several of the original Wii’s online services will fade to black in the console’s homeland. Adding to the carnage, the company confirmed that us yankees are far from exempt. Starting on June 28th, the Forecast Channel, News Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, the Check Mii Out Channel and the Nintendo Channel will all be taken offline. Wii Message Board and data exchange between friends are scheduled to get the axe as well. Now before you start contemplating trading in your system for its leaner, disconnected successor, we should note that the Wii Shop Channel will remain online. So there’s still time to snag a copy of Super Mario 64 from the Virtual Console for nostalgia’s sake.

Nintendo shutting down six Wii channels on June 28

Bad news for those still rocking out on the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo has announced that they’ll be shutting down five Wii channels on June 28 in North America and Japan. Affected channels are Forecast, News, Everybody Votes, Check Mii Out, Digicam Print, and the Nintendo Channel, as well as the WiiConnect24 feature.

The only games that could end up being affected are those that take advantage of WiiConnect24, including games like Wii Music and Mario Kart Wii, which allow you to send messages and other game information to friends via WiiConnect24. Now that the service is being shut down, these games may end up being slightly less appealing.

For now, it just looks like that North America and Japan are affected by the retirement, but other regions of the world could see the same thing happen sooner or later. The Wii is over six years old, which is certainly a long time, but we’re not sure that’s old enough to warrant discontinuations of various Wii features just yet.

Of course, it makes sense in the end, because Nintendo has the Wii U to focus on, and whenever a company releases a new console, its predecessor usually falls by the wayside. However, the slow discontinuation of the original Wii will put more pressure on Nintendo to step up its game with the Wii U. Hopefully they can keep their new console relevant and up-to-date.

Several Nintendo Wii Online Services Shutting Down On June 28

Several Nintendo Wii Online Services Shutting Down On June 28

Nintendo’s Wii U has was released this past November, although you wouldn’t know considering how bad its sales have been in recent months. But regardless how poorly it’s sales are, one thing we do know is the fact Nintendo will slowly but surely end its support for its Wii. The first phase of this will start soon as Nintendo has announced it will be ending some of the Wii’s services.

Nintendo published an “End of Life” notice to its Japanese Nintendo Wii customers highlighting six channels that will no longer be on-the-air starting June 28. The Wii channels that will have its services ended are its Forecast Channel, Check Mii Out Channel, News Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, Everyone’s Nintendo Channel and Data exchange between Wii friends on WiiConnect 24.

Hours after Japan published its End of Life notice, Nintendo of America sent out the following statement confirming U.S. Wii consoles would also be following Japan’s lead: (more…)

Rayman Legends Delay Resulted In 30 New Levels, New Boss Battles

Rayman Legends Delay Resulted In 30 New Levels, New Boss Battles

Rayman Legends’ delay may have brought the game to additional platforms, but ultimately, fans of Rayman Origins looking for more Rayman goodness are left without their fix, that is, until Ubisoft releases its second demo of the game on the Wii U later this month. But its seven-month delay is being used in the best way possible: by adding more content.

Rayman Legeds’ senior game manager Michael Micholic revealed to Official Nintendo Magazine UK the delay could certainly be seen as a blessing. “Trust me, the things we are adding aren’t minor,” he says. “We’re not talking about adding some polish here and there, but 30 new levels and several new bosses.” (more…)

Wii Controllers Could Get Rechargeable Battery Packs

Wii Controllers Could Get Rechargeable Battery PacksI am not quite sure about you, but with the Nintendo Wii already outdated considering how the Wii U was released not too long ago, it does boggle the mind that Nintendo might actually consider rolling out branded rechargeable battery packs for their Wii controllers. This was speculated after Nintendo held an online survey that asked users whether they would be interested in such a peripheral from official sources, of course.

The survey saw Nintendo ask users for their thoughts when it came to owning rechargeable battery packs which has been speculated to offer up to 13 hours of additional use from a single 90-minute charge, with a recommended retail price of $40. Frankly, that is a whole lot of money to pay for something that can be avoided through having enough rechargeable AA batteries around in the first place. On the other hand, why can’t Nintendo just equip future models of their Wii remote with rechargeable lithium ion batteries from the get go?

Nintendo to retire Wii network services in Japan, including the Weather Channel

Nintendo to retire Wii network services on June 28th, including the Weather Channel

No one disputes that the Wii is old, but old enough to retire? It seems so, at least in the case of a number of its internet services, which Nintendo has scheduled for closure on June 28th. An End of Life notice to Japanese customers reveals that a total of six channels will be put out to pasture, including News and Weather, as will the the ability for Wii Friends to exchange data over Wii Connect24. It’s not clear whether these terminations will apply globally, and in any case Nintendo explicitly says that other key services will continue for the time being, such as the Wii Shop Channel. Nevertheless, the latest iteration of the Wii — the Wii Mini — wasn’t able to connect to any internet services from the outset, so it certainly seems like the game company wants to shift its focus to the future — and maybe that isn’t such a bad idea. The source link has further details along with the obligatory “sorry to everyone” message.
