Mario Kart 7 3DS XL $200 Bundle Targets Early December Release

If you are still in two minds over whether to pick up a Nintendo 3DS or not, then you might as well give yourself a few days of waiting. Why do we say so? Well, this December 2nd, there will be a new launch from the house of Nintendo, where they will be rolling out a spanking new $200 (actually, it is $199.99, but who’s counting, really?) bundle that will come with a blue-black Nintendo 3DS XL handheld console inside, along with Mario Kart 7 already pre-installed. Talk about getting some kart racing mayhem goodness right out of the box!

This is definitely worth checking out, considering how the Nintendo 3DS XL already costs $200 as a standalone device, meaning you save $39.99 from purchasing a copy of Mario Kart 7 separately. Perhaps those who are very conscious about their spending, and would want to do so wisely this coming holiday season will give serious consideration to the Mario Kart 7 3DS XL bundle.

Samus Aran Amigurumi Plush is a Ball of Joy

Metroid is one of the best classic games ever. If you are a fan, check out this cute and cuddly amigurumi that PixelBlock created. Experience the softer side of Samus and you can’t help but smile.
samus aran plush
For those of you who have been sleeping under a rock for the last 26 years, Samus Aran is the famous intergalactic bounty hunter from Nintendo’s Metroid series, and she was one of maybe a handful of female heroes in video games at the time – not that we knew she was a woman until the end of the game. Now she is all cute and adorable as a handmade amigurumi!

This Samus measures about 3.5″ tall and is hand-crocheted and embellished from an original pattern. She comes complete with a small collectible card and in a handmade themed gift box. It’s a pretty cool find for that Metroid fan on your holiday list. It’s just $25(USD) over on Etsy.

Nintendo 3DS XL Mario Kart 7 bundle races in for the holidays

Nintendo‘s holiday gush continues, with the gaming company pushing out a new bundle this time preloading Mario Kart 7 onto the eye-friendly 3DS XL. The new, limited-edition system pairs the blue/black version of the larger glasses-free 3D handheld with a copy of Mario Kart 7  for $199.99, rather than the $240 you’d be shelling out if you paid RRP for each separately.

In fact, you’re getting the duo for the same RRP as the regular 3DS XL, which basically makes the game a freebie. It’s also saved to the handheld itself, meaning no need to carry around a separate cartridge; still, that does mean you can’t trade it in or swap it with a friend when you get bored of playing it.

Earlier this month, Nintendo revealed a flame red bundle centering on the original 3DS, and including a preloaded copy of Super Mario 3D Land. There’s also a bright yellow 3DS XL headed to Europe, while Japan gets a Charizard limited edition.

Meanwhile, Canada has a cut-price version of Nintendo’s Wii, the freshly-announced Wii Mini, priced at CA$99.99 but sacrificing internet connectivity and backward compatibility with GameCube titles in order to hit that price. Of course, most eyes are on the new Wii U, the next-gen console Nintendo is hoping will turn around its fortunes.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 27, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening everyone! This afternoon we heard that Apple’s Richard Williamson has been ousted in an iOS Maps switch-up, while Nintendo confirmed the rumored Wii Mini – but it’s only coming to Canada and won’t have Internet capabilities. Microsoft has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses since the OS launched last month, and even managed to sell 750,000 Xbox 360s during the week of Black Friday, despite the fact that the console is viewed as aging hardware by many.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2012 turned out to be the best ones ever for Amazon’s Kindle family of devices, and Evernote Clearly has added text-to-speech for its premium members, which is a pretty awesome new feature if you ask us. Gmail has added support for 10GB attachments so long as those attachments are stored in your Google Drive account, and Outlook.com was able to boast 25 million users today, with Microsoft telling us that an Android app is on the way.

We heard today that Foxconn might be manufacturing Microsoft’s rumored Surface phone, and Apple reassured everyone today that the new iMac is still on track to launch later this month (November 30 to be exact, which is right around the corner). Cyber Monday sales topped a whopping $2 billion this year, and we learned that Nintendo TVii will be launching in Japan on December 8, which leads us to believe that it won’t be long before the service is available in the US and Europe.

HP and Nomadix have settled their patent lawsuit, while Nintendo launched new nostalgia-fueled DLC for New Super Mario Bros. 2. Fans are petitioning Rockstar to release Grand Theft Auto V on PC, and indie hit Super Hexagon is now available on Steam. Microsoft might be opening its first retail store in Europe as early as next year, the NYPD is building a database of calls made with stolen phones, and Rdio has been updated on iOS and Android with an entirely new UI.

Finally tonight, we have a couple of reviews for you to check out. Vincent Nguyen delivered his review of the new Jawbone UP earlier today, while Chris Burns takes on Hamilton’s Great Adventure THD for some mobile gaming goodness. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Poll: Are you buying an Ouya or a Wii Mini?

Poll Are you buying an Ouya or a Wii Mini

When the Android-powered, crowd-funded Ouya console arrives next year with a near-$100 starting price, it’ll be the cheapest new game console at launch in … well, ever. Of course, the big entrenched players aren’t just taking this lying down — Microsoft’s got a $99 version of its Xbox 360, albeit with a subscription-based subsidy, and Nintendo today introduced the Wii Mini, a $99 Wii console with a fewer abilities than its slightly larger forebear (exclusive to Canada for now, but we doubt it’ll stay that way). Neither of these initiatives is a direct response to Ouya, mind you, but the three choices will assuredly find themselves paired against the others in the minds of consumers.

As such, we can’t help but wonder where you’ll end up. Does Nintendo’s revamped, smaller Wii get you all worked up, or is it Ouya’s promise of open-source freedom that’s doing it for you? Perhaps you’ve got a custom gaming rig that makes all other options look like Playskool by comparison? Let us know in the poll below!

Update: That whole “voting” part of the poll below seems to not be playing nice with our new look. Alas, we’re working on a fix right this minute, and will let you know as soon as you’re clear to vote. Terribly sorry about that!

Update 2: And we’re clear! Cast votes to your heart’s content!

Microsoft sold over 750K Xbox 360s last week, more than double Wii U sales

Microsoft’s aging Xbox 360 console still has some pep in its proverbial step, moving more than 750K consoles last week in the US alone, rounded out by Black Friday. Between November 18 and 23, 360 sales bucked internal forecasts — no doubt bolstered by the release of Halo 4 a few weeks prior, as well as holiday bundles — helping Microsoft’s game box to best Nintendo’s new Wii U by more than double (during the Wii U’s launch week, no less). Of course, the Xbox 360 now exists in a variety of flavors, from the $99 subscription model to the $300 S model; this makes Nintendo’s $300 minimum for a Wii U a somewhat unfair comparison with the variety of Xbox 360s out there.

Regardless, Redmond’s assuredly hoping these sales numbers will keep Xbox 360 in the top of NPD’s monthly sales charts (October was the 360’s 22nd consecutive month on top), though we have a few more weeks before we’ll hear for certain which console maker moved the most units during one of the year’s most crucial sales months. Despite a new PlayStation 3 model and the launch of the Vita this year, Sony’s yet to announce its Black Friday numbers.

New Super Mario Bros 2 DLC remembers the plumber’s past

There are two great things about Nintendo embracing a connected future for gaming: it allows Nintendo to release DLC for its games (more on that in just a minute) and it also allows the company to track gameplay data and give us the insane statistics we all crave. For instance, did you know that 3DS gamers across the globe have collected 300 billion coins in New Super Mario Bros. 2? That’s a lot of coins, and to celebrate Nintendo has released new DLC for New Super Mario Bros. 2 that’s free for a short time.

If you’ve been a lifelong Mario fan, then this DLC is definitely for you. It takes levels from the old NES-era Mario games and remakes them for New Super Mario Bros. 2‘s Coin Rush mode. Officially dubbed the “Gold Classics Pack,” the DLC pack contains three courses inspired by levels in the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. The first course in the pack brings together the first two levels of Super Mario Bros., while the second course will be familiar to those of us who played Super Mario Bros. 3 non-stop when we were kids. For the third course in the pack, we’re going back to Super Mario Bros. for a romp through Bowser’s castle, ending with a battle against the meanest Koopa the Mushroom Kingdom has ever seen.

Nintendo has already won major points by revisiting classic Mario level, but even better is the fact that this DLC will be free through January 31, 2013. Once February arrives, the DLC will cost $2.50, which really isn’t bad when you consider how much some publishers like to charge for DLC. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the DLC in a new Nintendo Direct Mini stream, which also you tells you how to go about downloading the Gold Classics Pack. Check out the video below.

The DLC is available starting today, so have at it. At the very least, make sure you use SpotPass to nab the DLC before it becomes a paid download on February 1, 2013. What do you think of this latest DLC offering for New Super Mario Bros. 2 – is it nice to see classic levels re-imagined, or were you hoping for something different?

Nintendo Wii Mini Official, Priced under $100, Release Date 12/7, Canada Only

Just moments ago, we published a post about the Nintendo Wii Mini being leaked by Best Buy Canada. I guess they only jumped the gun a little bit, since the console has now officially been posted up on Nintendo’s Canadian Website.

wii mini

The Wii Mini will sell for just $99.99 (CAD) (~$100 USD), and has a bold new look that I really like. The console comes in a small red and black box, and includes a matching red Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controller, as well as a plain white power brick, sensor bar and a composite video cable. Those who want an HD connection via HDMI or Component video will still have to buy that cable separately.

wii mini 3

It’s fully compatible with the over 1300 current Wii titles and existing accessories as well. Other than its (as yet unspecified) smaller size and cooler industrial design, it does away with one other aspect of the original – the Wii Mini has no internet connectivity, nor will it offer backwards compatibility with the Gamecube. That will certainly keep cost down, but will also reduce the potential revenues from online game purchases and DLC. I’m not sure how I feel about this move on Nintendo’s part.

But with the console going on sale on December 7th exclusively in Canada, it’s perfect timing for Nintendo to flood the market with a low-cost gaming system and get people excited about the Wii again – especially with the Wii U being priced at $300 to $350 – and already in short supply.

With its Canada-only release, I wouldn’t be surprised if you start seeing tons of these show up on eBay so those outside of the Great White North can enjoy a cheap Wii.

Nintendo TVii launching December 8 in Japan, US and Europe in 2013 [update]

Nintendo has announced that TVii, the Wii U’s multimedia TV guide, will launch alongside the console’s Japan launch on December 8, while US and European users will have to until 2013 in order to get TVii functionality. TVii pulls data from Rovi’s G-Guide and lets gamers scroll through listings using the GamePad.

UPDATE: It’s confirmed that Europe will see the 2013 delay, but a solid release date for the US is actually still unknown. The last we heard, TVii was delayed into December, so it’s possible we may see it on the 8th along with Japan, but no official word from Nintendo on that yet.

Earlier this month, Nintendo announced that TVii was delayed into December, and would not coincide with the American launch of the console. However, the feature has been delayed once again for both US and European gamers to sometime in 2013. Japan gamers, however, will be able to take advantage of TVii right at launch.

However, one feature that Nintendo is charging for is the ability the Wii U’s GamePad as a television remote control in Nintendo TVii. Users who want this feature will have to pay a one-time fee of ¥100 ($1.22). A strange fee, indeed, but then again, gamers are paying double digits every year to watch Netflix on their Xbox 360, so it’s probably something that we don’t need to complain about too much.

The Wii U had a respectable launch week after its release on November 18, with over 400,000 consoles sold in the US during the first week. That’s a respectable number, and Nintendo may be close to edging Microsoft to the number of consoles sold per month, which Microsoft has held the crown for the past 20 months or so.

Nintendo Wii Mini Announced

The Nintendo Wii Mini is official. After hearing about it yesterday, and just a few hours after Best Buy listed the device on its website, Nintendo is finally announcing the Wii Mini today. Nintendo redesigned its famous gaming console by making it smaller and cheaper for its customers. The Wii Mini focuses mainly on Wii games and it can play more than 1,400 disc-based Wii games. The console sports a matte black color with a red border on it and it will come with a Wii Remote Plus and a red Nunchuk controller.

It will be available on December 7 at a suggested retail price of just $99.99. Unfortunately, Nintendo says that it will only launch the console in Canada, with no word of a global launch. The Wii Mini also lacks Internet connectivity and it cannot play Nintendo GameCube games. “There are games in the Wii library for every type of player,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice president and general manager. “Wii Mini is a great gift for the holidays that brings everyone in the family together to play. Wii Mini has a mini price, but it’s all about big fun.”
